It seems dumb that people think the pokemon game will be a mainline game. It's right there in the name that it's a spinoff.

Lets Go pikachu? Pokemon GO integrration? lets go, pokemon go? Go-go? Of course it has go integration. This will be just a neat little spinoff.

Maybe not the one that was leaked, but didn't Nintendo announced that Gamefreak was indeed working on a mainline game back at the last E3?

Yep.

I've added the video link in my post. He talks about how we might not see the game for "more than a year" still, so I'd say they could start talking about it again at E3.
I don't see why it couldn't be that "Let's go Pikachu" thing.

I bought Super Mario Odyssey yesterday since Dark Souls Remastered won't be out for a while still. I've held off on buying SMO until now because a while ago I played a 3D Mario game on the 3DS, and the 3D made for a game where I could not predict exactly where I was going to jump to. So far I finished Cascade World and Desert World (although I still haven't collected every moon) and the game is quite fun, although not nearly on the same level of Breath of the Wild -but then again, what is on the Nintendo Switch?

Cappy is a fairly fun game mechanic that allowed the developers to give each worlds its own distinct mechanics so far, but I did wish the game came with a fully-fledged level editor that allowed players to build worlds and combine the different Cappy abilities into some really difficult 3D platforming sections. The game itself lacks challenge, but after a hard day's work the last thing I want is to stress out over a video game so that's fine with me.

So far I've been extremely happy with the console. I've bought more games for it in a year than I did for my PS4 since I bought it in 2015. The handheld mode is a big factor, but the games matter as well. Most games released on the PS4 over the last couple of years have given me a "meh, seen this before, played this before" kind of feeling.

The next game I'll get will probably be Dark Souls Remastered. I've played it extensively on the Xbox360, but just like Skyrim the ability to play it on the go is just fantastic. Maybe I'll buy Splatoon 2 again. I sold it because I found the game to be a bit barebones when it launched last year but according to the news feed on my Switch, Nintendo seems to have added a fair bit of content.

I think if you look at Mario Odyssey as a platformer, it'll come off as a really easy game. I saw it as more of an exploration/puzzle game so the difficulty didn't bother me. The game focuses way more on the discovery aspect than "can I make that jump?" so I was able to easily pretend it was a puzzle game.

I wrote about this in this thread before but similarly, boss fights were a big letdown for me. Still, it was one of the most enjoyable/fun games i have played in the last 3-5 years.

I can see his point. My patience with videogames has actually gone down as I get older. Too often nowadays, I feel like I just wasted my time if I don't make enough progress in a game before I go back to work the next day.

I might've mentioned this before, but I'm having more trouble with motion sickness in Breath of the Wild while in handheld mode compared with docked mode. Before purchase, I thought I'd have more problems playing on a big screen TV. Oh well, I'm almost done with the game anyway. I'm at 70ish shrines and it's feeling repetitive now so I'm just rushing to the end.

I'm starting to look at it that way too. The more I play it, the more the game seems to tell me that I can make things as difficult as I like. Some moons definitely provide a challenge, but without demanding me to do every single part of a sequence pixel-perfectly. Playing those retro-platformers like Shovel Knight is fun, but the constant trial and error does tend to get to me sooner rather than later.

Between Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey I can't help but feel that Nintendo seems to have found a sweet spot between challenging gameplay and overly casual gameplay. I don't know how they do it, but they really have a knack for making games that both hardcore gamers and casual gamers can enjoy equally.

I think this generation, they've focused on catering to adults who don't have time (or 4 year olds who have short attention spans, but really, what's the difference?). The very concept of the Switch is a "I don't have time to sit in front of a TV for 4 hours anymore, but I do have a 20 minute bus ride" so they designed their games to be playable in short bursts. You can play the game for 5 minutes and feel like you accomplished something. Splatoon 2 games are very short so it's easy to just pop in and pop back out. It's not like a SC game where you have to commit anywhere from 20-50 minutes just to play one game (and destroy your wrists while you're at it)

I think that's very smart of Nintendo to cater to that demographic. My oldest cousins who were in the first generation of kids to adopt videogames are pushing 50 now and have mostly stopped playing videogames. Same with my peers in our 30s, many of whom are starting to raise kids of their own. Mainstream AAA titles are mostly focused on the ultra crowded teenager to young adult demographic. Older gamers will have more money and can pass on the hobby to a new generation.

I'm finding out that even the ones that have time to sit in front of a TV for 4 hours don't want to do anything remotely using any brain power during weeknights. They would rather binge on Netflix or play mobile games (basically anything that can be done in a zombie like state).

Hmm is that really different from what I reported? Doesn't change the fact that it wouldn't be surprising to hear from a mainline Pokemon game at this E3, even if it releases in one more year.

And then there is the unskippable 1 minute intro in Splatoon ;D. One of the only mistakes they made in this game, for me. I really don't need to see maps when I boot up, when I can use another menu to do it quicker.

I just disagree with the notion that LGP and LGE aren't mainline.

Yeah that's what I meant, I don't see any reason why LGP couldn't be that mainline game Gamefreak announced back then.

Hmm, then it appears I misinterpreted(or misplaced) your stance when I initially jumped in.

It does feel like that. it's noticeable in the small things too, like how quickly the system resumes from Sleep. It's near-instant.

i finished tropical freeze today.

i'm not really sure why it receives so much praise among 2d platformers. many levels were down right frustratingly designed and all of the boss fights were bullshit

I enjoyed it once I got used to the controls. The only parts I found frustrating in a bad way (all of the platformers that I love piss me off in some way) were the auto-scrolling parts like the mine-cart levels. Those were practically Battletoads turbo tunnel levels of frustrating, where it's technically possible to beat the level with pure reaction time, but for mortals, the only way to beat it is to memorize the entire level.

Oh yeah, and the parts where I would miss something (like a puzzle piece or a KONG letter), but I would get barreled past a checkpoint, forcing me to play the entire level over again instead of suiciding and starting from the previous checkpoint.

The thing I liked the most about the level design were the use of 2.5D. Things like the camera angle rotating, or things in the background happening that would influence what happens in the foreground. There's just so much happening visually, so much eye-candy and a lot of the stuff that's happening on screen actually affects what's going on in the level. Overall I liked the levels. They were easy enough to beat (not EASY by any means, but not insanely difficult), but tough to get all of the puzzle pieces and KONG letters.

Boss fights I enjoyed, aside from the fact that they took 10 million hits to kill

As far as the praise is concerned, I've heard "solid platformer" and I've heard "best platformer of the generation" and everything in-between. Personally, I'm in between (Meatboy last generation, Celeste this generation. I don't think Tropical Freeze touches either of these games). I liked the game a lot, enough that after beating it, I feel compelled enough to go back and grab all the puzzle pieces, collect the relics and basically get everything I missed. Controls were sluggish, but I liked it once I got used to it and realized that I was controlling an 800 lbs gorilla so of course it was sluggish.
