About 40% through, game is one of the best in the series.
Writing is as cringe as ever and the characters are 5/10 Gameplay is at least a 9/10. Map design is best since fe12 at least. There is a hub area, but you can literally just ignore it and go straight to next map. You spend as much or as little time on it as you want. Doing so rewards you with xp and broken weapons (my friend on ch8 has his killer lance up to 54 crit) You can turn anyone into any class, but seals at least so far are limited and money is surprisingly limited.
The emblems are strong but not overpowered.
Also it deserves it's own mention. Break is a fantastic mechanic and I love what it does for the game in terms of promoting proactive gameplay and nerfing passive enemy phase strats.

Is the cringe toned down to Three Houses level of cringe or did they dial it back up to Fates level of cringe? I saw on a few message boards that the weebs are up in arms over translation issues, something about lessening the amount of romance and stuff.
How long is the game? And are there any major branching paths?

The amount of story i care in fire emblem is like 5%. For me its all about gameplay and likeable characters (looks and strength)

I'd call it Birthright/Awakening levels, same with the quality of the story, they went safe and uninspired, but the English VA doesn't always help.
MC feels Corrin-esque (you are literally the God of this world and carelessly introdice yourself as such to all regardless of if they earned your trust. Some cutscenes take way too long (death in ch3 took 7 minutes).

There are certainly strong units (Diamant, Ivy, Chloe) but it feels like everyone was neutered to let the emblems shine.

I'm playing Lunatic/Classic as usual. Writing is god awful - easily one of the worst I've ever seen in the series. I can't recall the last time they so overtly said "yeah don't take me seriously at all." Gameplay is quite good, though after so many hours in 3H it took me a bit to re-adjust to units not instantly dying on Lunatic (starting with chapter 1 3H your casters/archers got touch of death'd at all times). I don't feel like I'm playing the game on Lunatic though - I'm getting basically no money/SP and that seems more punishing than the relative lack of XP. I also heard there're supposedly random encounters but in Lunatic I've not seen any, which means I'm further getting resource starved. Still enjoying the challenge, but this is certainly one game where I'll probably have to loop back around later on a lower difficulty to actually enjoy the game system, unless things 'catch up' later. Ryul (Alear in EN?) has been carrying the shit out of me so far, though I don't think there's a good way to turn into her a one-man army like you can with some of the previous games.

Birthright/Awakening is similar enough to 3H levels of cringe that I'm totally ok with it. As long as it's not Conquest/Revelations level of cringe, it's good. And if they're removing the extraneous content from 3H and focusing more on the core FE experience, safe and uninspired is a good place for the story.
So it looks like it's roughly the same length as Awakening? Did I get that right?

Interestinflg MC is carrying, havent found them that great. You are alluding to skirmishes, which spawn in world map for more xp, but on Lunatic(Maddening) they are extremely rare

Pretty much, extraneous stuff is still there, it's just easier to ignore, and thr stuff that is there is mainly to help buff your units/comp and less about romance simulation w/minors
On a seperate note, thieves are insane in this game. Yunaka is way stronger than I initially expected.

I'm still only around chapter 10 but with Liberation's ridiculously low weight and a small investment in dodge she's my tankiest character overall with the ability to one-shot a boss' gauge while also being able to one-turn most enemies. There've been more than a few maps where she would get parked on top of a +dodge tile and 1vX half an army because she keeps healing via Engage.

Interesting, idk if I got rngscrewed on growths or what but mine rarely doubles and even when he does he only chips half their health.
Yunaka has been a way better tank for me.

I think growths are fixed in this game, or at least are in Luna.

TIL. Crazy amount of stuff they nerfed/changed in Luna that they don't really tell you about. Oh well.

If it's like previous games, I imagine the growths are still random, but the level ups are calculated in the beginning of the game so you can't save scum better levels.

One part I don't get is that growths are affected by your class, so are your growths for the entire game affected by base class alone?

You would just add the class rates to your base rates, and calculate the outcome given the rn's that were generated.

According to some JP chatter it does look like the growths aren't random but are fixed fixed, so different people using the exact same classes/levels should have identical characters.

Makes it easier to make a Lunatic tier list i guess
