The best comparison is FFXIII, where you have the initial game, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. All parts of the same story, different games, full price.

The game kick started the RPG genre outside of Japan and made the Playstation what it is and in the long term started the console wars which Sony has not looked back on ever since and won every single time since then. The game is so popular that books, and movies have been made. The characters are so popular they have been put into games that have nothing to do with the Final Fantasy universe as it is expected the extra $$$ will generate just because of them. Hell the game became so popular it even affected hairstyles in Japan i.e. Teenagers started adapting Cloud's spiky hairstyle. This is a system seller. Whether Square is low on cash and this was there trump card is irrelevant. the legacy of FF7 and its series is has already been created. they don't need to market their game, but they will do it anyway. if we're talking about money, it's guaranteed to be a success, though the company has tanked to incredible lows until just recently (they are publically traded). as for the teenagers then, trying to form their hair based off FMVs and official illustrations doesn't speak to the Japanese animation culture... and how it influences the design, the game, the designers themselves, and even the players of a game like FF7. there are a good deal many other things that affect popular hairstyles (not cosplay) than one example that requires literal hair glue and an hour of time. once the games are deemed bad, it's irrelevant that the game sells well and earns off the sony console exclusivity. this is why I use, "forgettable" in referring to the remakes since it's the original that cemented itself in gamer culture, and is creating most of the buzz for these new games. people realize that they can no longer draw parallels for the quality of games in the same universe, in the same "series" and even under the same directors. they'll play new games anyway, but it doesn't mean they'll affect the next generation as much as what these older games showed us. it's just an assumption that most of everything SE makes is a blockbuster and carries a certain level of quality all the way through. that's simply not true. they make a lot of games, publish a lot of games, partner with the press often, and rely on their older games/older fans. the company has generally messed up a lot and is now much less influential than before. need I remind that they've lost many of their brilliant creators, and even the people who were going to fill those shoes.

They are connected and play in the same universe with many of the same characters, but they were not written as one. XIII-2 may have never come out if XIII didn't sell well enough for example. FFVII was always written as one finished story. Crisis Core or the Advent childen movie are to FFVII what XIII-2 and Lightning returns are to XIII. As you said XIII, XIII-2 and Lightning returns are different games. You can split of VII in as many parts as you want, it's still one game.

If they deliver enough to warrant the price tag, what's the fricking problem? If I get a great game (or in this case, several great games), I'm going to expect to pay for every single one of them. Does SE making more money make you unable to sleep at night? What's the logic here?

I hope this stays in the game in some way or form. For me, this was a very integral part of FF7.
