I just got the communication to raid the Advent's communication tower, bald guy is RIP, and i had a phone call so i didn't listen to what they were telling me. Can i delay this operation withouth consecuences ? I would like to finish the continental achievements first.
Yes you can delay it as long as you want. (assuming Avatar doesn't finish and end the game obviously).
I had a hackable tower in my map that was "restore all actions for squad" (100% hacking chance too). I'm thinking ez Sectopod kill, gg. I move all my guys up out of cover and shoot the Sectopod. Then I go to hack the tower and it's gone. I killed it with a grenade. GG.
Thankfully it was a single pod and RNGsus graced me with a Sectopod stun hack success.
ok just had my first real bullshit map layout + pod placement.
it was a hacking site with the terminal inside a train diagonally opposite of the starting location. to reach the terminal you needed about 4 double moves. the terminal was against the wall towards me so grenading and range hacking it wasnt possible. the first pod was right at the start and next to a security tower so i couldnt sneak past them without using at least one extra turn, the other 3 pods were around the terminal.
i actually won the mission because for once i had ridiculous luck on my roles. i had two 40% shots doing max damage and two or three 60% crits that allowed me to finish the pods in the same turn i activated them. the last pod was double sectoid + advent trooper that could be safely ignored and i moved into the open to hack it. the last two sectoids didnt do a thing because they are sectoids and the advent trooper missed my flanked specialist. flawless mission, thats also xcom baby.
Rofl I went to visit a UFO that landed and thought it would be a fun mission. It was stressful as hell. 1st turn was without a timer, but on the 2nd turn I hacked a superheavy turret and that broke my concealment. Suddenly a timer with 6 turns pops up and shit hits the fan - a heavy MEC, 2 heavy lancers and 2 heavy turrets for breakfast (1 disabled). Turns 3? 1 Andromedon and 2 Muttons come from the side. 2 turns left to hack - I rush in with hacker inside to hack from range and the very next turn another andromedon and 2 advent troopers bump into my hacker LEL. 6 turn feels so bullshit versus these enemies. Also this mission was carried entirely by the 2 snipers on high ground. Hit so many money shots from half-way across the map.
I also just completed my Psi ops building, can Ireally only turn rookies into psi operatives? Not my current colonels? Sucks and not sure if worth. Can I retrain my squaddies back to rookies and then into psi operatives?
I got my first andromedon on a hack/destroy something on an 8-turn time limit mission. Said andromedon spawned on a highway overpass near the building that housed the mission objective, which also had an andromedon pod inside it. I basically save scummed my way into figuring out how to do the damn mission and still only managed with 1 turn left.
My first sectopod spawned behind a house on the same 8-turn limit mission. I had issues getting LOS to do remote hacking with the gremlin. After the patrol triggered, the sectopod crashed into the house but was somehow out of LOS of both my psi and specialist. Couldn't get LOS until the next turn after which it already wounded one of my troops.
Welp, I don't think I can salvage this campaign. Avatar progress reached its maximum, and I can hit one more facility, but then I have to go through at least three more territories to get to the next.

What I was doing with UFO is clear one pack, make a hole into UFO with explosives and hack the transmitter from distance. The timer is not that bad this way even if you have to fight more in between.
Only squadies to PSI, but they rank up just by training, so that's a big positive.
Well, I think my playthrough is coming to a close too. I'm training my 1st fresh batch of Psi Operatives and... I actually ran out of things to research. Have tier 3 weapons and armor just wasting cores on nades and ammo mods. I still have 5 points of progress until avatar finishes and I have connect the whole world (not all sections, but every continent). I'm just gonna fuck around until the psi-ops get some levels, but I regret not getting them earlier. Gonna hit vial blacksite, codex brain blacksite and then skullfuck a live codex.

The connections and the continent bonuses are random yes. My second game has a North-south America connection that my first game did not have.

Just advance the story line, and you'll also be able to reduce progress (hack an officer/codex, etc).
Now add DODGED: GRAZED for every sprinting motherfucker in existence and about half of things in half-cover. Introducing the trifecta of dodged: grazed that is all too eager to tear you open a new asshole: Elite Stunlancer, Archon, aaaand Chryssalid. Special mentions: SNEKS who are actually Neo and dodge:graze a 100% sniper shot from concealment, and codexes that spawn clones when grazed that spawn more clones when you as much as look down the sights at them.
Fuck yes I'm salty as fuck about this retarded mechanic.

So wait, I noticed that regularly-spawning Codexes don't reduce Avatar progress. Future ones I get from hacking an officer will, though, not just that first one?

No. I was just talking about quest progress in general. I highly doubt that you're boxed in that badly on the strategic map. Aside from the facilities that you're tasked with destroying, there are other facilities that you'll be attacking for story line purposes. Go do those to reduce Avatar project progress.
You can only skulljack an officer once for quest purposes. You also will have to skulljack a codex at some point, which also will reduce Avatar progress. Just get the shadow chamber up and running first.
Hm, okay. I also recall hearing that destroying a facility removes all the progress it added to the bar? If that's true then I might be all right.
Anyhow I'm attacking it now. One of my guys got grabbed by a viper, and he was still grabbed by the time everybody else had taken their turns. However, he still has action points and the game seems to expect me to spend them, except he can't because he's grappled. Not sure if this is a bug or if there's some function I'm not seeing to just end the turn manually.
