most games are designed asymmetrically anyway with the human being at a disadvantage. increasing that disadvantage is what games draw difficulty from.

To avoid a misunderstanding (as this could be read as "it's too easy"):
TB said he didn't do a first impression only, but actually beat the game - as his "first impression" was a 72h playthrough. The first game in 6 years that he finished when he was just supposed to do a first impression video... :D



[edit] I'm starting to feel the hype as well - Metacritic got a review aggregration of 91 points over 37 reviews so far o.0. The few sub-85 reviews state that it might not please everybody as tactical games are a genre that you have to like ..or that it's abit unforgiving in playstyle.
I guess the purists can live with those negative points :D :D :D

...lets just hope that the review sites didn't get paid a massive amount of cash to hype the game...

Speaking of character pools, I assume we're all going to jump right into it and create some cool characters on release. I'm assuming it will be transferable, should we try to make our own TL character pool here?

Actually it's fairly easy to create a system where an AI will beat humans. Machine Learning is a relatively mature technology. But it starts easy and then crushes you until you have no fun at all.

The reviews are excellent. But I wonder if it's going to do the game a disservice in the end. The Witcher 3 was arguably the best game last year yet every other critics threw away their reason to play hipster and announce Undertale as the second of the christ despite the former being much more influential. I fear XCOM2 may suffer the same fate, especially since it's a genre that's fairly hard to grasp.

Pre-ordered, as much as I hate and am against that stuff. Game looks good, getting good reviews and TB praised it to heaven. I really hope I don't get burned by this as much as FO4, which was mediocre.

I don't get all of the hesitation. There's so much video of the game out there now that there's literally no mystery as to what the game is and how well it plays. Anyone who has preordered or is thinking about preordering should know exactly what they're buying.

yeah its the first game i pre-ordered since civ5 and i have a really good feeling about this one. they have shown extensive footage of the game being played instead of just scripted scenes or pre-rendered videos and known players of the predecessor have gotten really early copies to iron things out.
i dont think there are many releases in the past where we know as much of the game as we do about xcom2. no way i get burned again.

Is it worth the preorder? I plan to pick it up in a retail store on Friday the 5th, but I dunno if I want to necessarily go to the store just for it.

I was meant to wait on this one till all the DLC out but couldn't resist and got the deluxe edition from gmg with the -25% discount, loved Enemy Unknown enough and this got excellent reviews so had to go for it.

The only negative things I've seen are that there's still a fair amount of clipping when it comes to large models and some environmental models, that clipping can affect line of sight in weird ways, the camera behaves badly when it comes to close up shots, and there are framerate issues associated with the gratuitous explosions.

I can live with all of that, though hopefully they'll fucking fix it at some point since all that shit was in Enemy Unknown/Within.

Are people planning to use the LW maker mods on Day 1? They look cool and while there are two mods that help the player vs one mod that makes the game harder the game should still be difficult on classic. If it's too easy then the difficulty can always be bumped up by going legendary or putting in more mods. Though the gun mods are probably side grade weapons that aren't strictly better than regular ones, but squad leaders seems like a pure benefit that also encourages troop diversity.

Oh, and lots of randomization. Starting location, continent bonuses, loot, and results of certain experimental projects are all randomized.
