Paying gives you more playstyles and more strategic options than what non-paying players have. I don't agree with LoL's model either. Only Dota2's business model, where all paid content is purely cosmetic, is not Pay2Win. im pretty sure its the same with lol where cosmetic contents are paid by money.

Speak for yourself. I PAID for that "completely free game" upon release and was totally happy with what was in it for what it cost me at launch. But I did not sign up for them adding microtransactions to add weapons that drastically change playstyles. The simple fact is that having more options is always going to be better than having fewer options. Hence if you luck out you're in a better position than someone who doesn't. @sharky246: You also have to pay to unlock characters in LoL. So basically, nothing like DOTA2 at all. In DOTA2 its purely cosmetic stuff. All gameplay options are open to everyone. Really not optimistic that's the way they'll go with Overwatch. Not after what they've done with Heroes. But I guess we'll see.

Hence if you luck out you're in a better position than someone who doesn't. i paid for tf2 about 5 weeks before it went f2p. so? and as said all the weapons can easily be gotten ingame simply by playing the game(!) or bought with like 2$(!). still we have years of support events and content for a game. if you come in after 8 years and then have to play a bit or pay a tiny amount to unlock evrything is unfair p2win milking then.. what youre right that more options are better. but we are talking about playing the game for a month and getting evrything. not LoLs "grind 8000hours or pay 2000$" bullshitmodel. but yeah i agree on the last part. i really dont trust blizzard to pick a reasonable business model. for overwatch.

I'm a huge TPS fan, especially ones with longer kill times. It's always been my game of choice as far as shooters go It will be interesting to see an AAA version of it. I don't really care about the money aspect as long as it's not too parasitic

By all accounts the in-game money cost of heroes in that game is prohibitively expensive, necessitating significant grinds (loads of people have been complaining about it). Coupled with the fact that heroes are also quite expensive with real money ($4 for a cheap one up to $10-11 for an expensive one according to a quick google search). Prices in USD. For comparison the most expensive heroes in LoL are around $7 and there's only two of them. Now I fundamentally disagree with LoL's business model as it is. But everything I've seen of HotS looks like they've taken LoL and turned it up to eleven.

So the maths...assuming 50% winrate that's about 25 gold on average per match. And something like 20 minutes per match from what I've seen. So in 10 hours you can get therefore get about 750 gold. Which is less than half of the cheapest hero available. I think there are dailies for small boosts as well. So factoring that in you're talking between 20-30 hours for one cheap hero by my reckoning. And five times that for something more expensive. With around 35 heroes in the game at present and most at the upper tiers (I think there are four cheap ones?) that's a substantial amount of time. Price point per dollar comes at about...$1.50 per ten hours pure from games? Something like that? Far as I know there are quests that give you bigger boosts. But they're one-time payouts. Compare and contrast with LoL where a handful of games over a few hours can get you a cheap hero.

The system isn't designed to make new players pay up-front, it's designed to make players with time invested into the game have to pay to try other heroes or especially new heroes. Plus of course cosmetics but I couldn't care less about how they monetize cosmetics.

Keep in mind, we are describing the Heroes model here, not the Overwatch model (which hasn't been announced). So while there's no reason to believe that Blizzard will decide to stop gouging customers at any point in the near future, nothing is confirmed. The game will almost certainly be worth a try whenever it comes out (loooong time away obviously).

Especially if player skill is going to be worth more that hero abilities. I spent hundreds of hours playing CS 1.6 and you had no classes there.

I'm actually not sure if you start with a free hero not (because you can always use the rotated free ones).

Five heroes, plus two additional ones that you unlock at player level 12 and 15 for seven total.
