The request for a trademark was suspended because the company Innovis Labs, Inc. registered the trademark before Blizzard for their app named Overwatch. http://tsdr.uspto.gov/documentviewer?caseId=sn86239314&docId=SUL20150109152215#docIndex=0&page=1 is this a normal thing for big companys? I asume they would atleast check if their name is available right?

Just looking into it a little bit, it seems Innovis Labs' application only became publicly viewable on Apr. 15, 2014 http://trademarks.justia.com/860/56/overwatch-86056160.html. Earliest reports of Blizzard's trademark filing was around April 8th. So it seems that both applications were generally around the same time, and the Trademark office goofed by not telling Blizzard their application was going to be rejected until now (when it should have been last Summer). Realistically, Blizzard could just add an additional subtitle to their game's name and it should fly, as long as they make it prominent enough.

Yeah but I don't think they'll change the name, they have a lot of stuff already with the branding, cinematics, figures, t shirts, the game itself etc. So I think they will just buy or give money to the other guys, aa long as it isn't excessive.

I decently liked playing CTF in FEAR: Combat too. Not so much UT though, and didn't try Quake's. I never played enough TFC to really judge it fairly, but I didn't care for it that much. I didn't like that 2fort map.

I didn't know trademarks could go icognito like that. I would think that shit needs to be super public. On a similiar note, every Blizzard game announcement we can kinda guess because of trademark filings, why doesn't Blizzard make their trademark applications private for other projects (like WoW expansions and the like)

There's a reason why copyright laws don't cover gameplay mechanics or ideas. Hell, there's some amazing ideas from games I've played in the best where I wish other companies would steal.

I suppose the reason why they consider the first "contact" date for the application is so there's a clear-cut way to determine who actually applied first, instead of who got their paperwork through the system first.

But many hoped/assumed it in the Blizzcon threads, so there was alot of confusion regarding that. Dead hype is the best hype. Because people expect to much and are let down on the other hand Blizzard actually made hyping up Warlords of Dreanor work. I would say next Blizzcon will be the next time we get more information and an estimation for a possible Beta.
