The only way to generate additional cash a year from now is via PvE content and cosmetic items. I hope we get PvE content in the future. I would not say "only" cosmetic items though. They already have lots of cosmetics in the game and people love it. That stuff will be huge.
Future content apart from cosmetics will be about PvP (maps, game modes) and heroes imo. PvE should be rather irrelevant in comparison.

I bet the OW team is chomping at the bit to put out some single player content but it is completely not in the scope right now.

I really hope they don't waste time on pve content for a long time, they have a lot of other priorities atm.

Would be cool to have a side mode once in a while in the weekly brawl. Something like the training bot revolt where there are just waves of training bots and then some big omnic boss after you defend for 10 minutes or something.
But nothing serious and not for a while. At most i see them doing a dumb little minigame but no serious PvE content.

I wonder how they will treat competitive players quitting during or after the first round. Only thing I can think of is to let the rest of the team be able to leave without being penalized. Cause honestly, waiting for another 2 rounds just to lose is a real fucking drag.

I know they said they're prioritizing that heavily. I'm not sure the best solution. Probably just penalize the leaver heavily to really discourage it. Obviously being beta no one is really attached to their account so leaving is a bit more liberal.

what console FPS games have a good amount of revenue from cosmetic-only items?
if Blizzard wants a continuous flow of cash from console players i think they can only do it with PvE content considering the promises they've already made. they've arleady said they won't charge for new heroes, maps and multiplayer modes. on consoles that's how other games keep the money rolling in.
interesting view on monetization http://seekingalpha.com/article/3969051-activision-expect-stronger-monetization-hearthstone-heroes-warcraft

Console isn't PC, though. It is already a $60 title on console and Blizzard has already said the console environment will be separate from PC in terms of patching. I wouldn't be shocked (actually I'd be shocked otherwise) if console doesn't get the content PC gets 6 months or so later in the form of a big ass patch. They'll just be porting over work they did for PC so it isn't a huge undertaking. I don't think Blizzard is expecting a steady stream of income from console.

are there console FPS games that generate big money through cosmetics though? for that matter what PC FPS games generate big money from cosmetics?
with LoL , Dota2 and WoW you can see the cosmetic change in your character; with an FPS game you can't fully see it on screen.

Its expensive to patch consoles. Everyone knows that and if any console people complain they should write to Microsoft or Sony to make it so you don't have to go through an expensive, long and tedious process to patch the software. This isn't new territory or anything here this is pretty standard stuff.

I'd imagine that valve has made a small fortune out of selling TF2 hats too.

I think his argument is full-body skins don't do much for the owner of the skin. In CSGO you can inspect your gun/knife but in OW you can't really inspect your full skin. You get a cosmetic change of the gun in first-person view but thats about it.
But its like hats in TF2. You get them to show them off to others not to show off to yourself.

as far as i know Blizzard is selling loot boxes and the content of the loot boxes are randomly generated. you can not buy a specific cosmetic item for a specific price.

D3 has already been patched 2 times this year on consoles.

Yes they will patch consoles but the patch needs to go through all sorts of channels at Microsoft/Sony which is why it is done completely independent from the PC version. Just like every other game ever that has released on PC and console.

I'm pretty sure they release Diablo patches on the PC and console at the same time, what would stop them from doing that in Overwatch?

It depends on how they approach it. Certification approval for updates and DLC can take a few weeks on console in my personal experience submitting games to Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo. However, you can release anytime after receiving approval. For simultaneous releases on PC+Console, generally a developer will get approval a few days or weeks before their targeted release date so they can just push the activation button for all platforms at once. For more emergency releases, PC tends to come first to stop the bleeding, and the bottleneck for consoles becomes the first-party certification team.

I don't know what you mean by SaaS in this context, it makes no sense to me. Unless you mean to imply that all updates will be server sided and client won't need changes? But that makes no sense either ...
PC will obviously get any hotfixes and patches very quickly since Blizz controls the infrastructure from end to end there.
Major content releases will be timed and planned in advance so they will likely release very closely together. In a dev update though blizz themselves had said pc will likely always release first because of the certification process for console.

SaaS is Kaplan's terminology not mine. he uses it all the time when he talks about how Overwatch will be supported. he also uses the term "live service" which i associate with stuff like Windows Live Services. The guy is playing fast and loose with terms i guess. What I think he means is that Overwatch will constantly be updated, tweaked, and improved.
D3 console and PC patches are closely tied together. I'd expect the same thing with Overwatch. 6 months time difference between a PC patch and the corresponding Console patch i just can't see happening based on how Blizzard lauded Overwatch as being designed for console from day 1.

Well yeah, they can release the patch at the same time, but they're delaying the PC patch to do so.
