Total Annihilation Zero by Vohvelieläin

Introduction

Total Annihilation Zero is a full-fledged modification of the classic strategy game Total Annihilation and aims to recreate the entire game to the maximum extent and quality that is currently possible. In addition to completely redesigned versions of the two factions from the original game, the Arm and the Core, TA Zero introduces a third faction, the Guardians of Kadesh. All three factions are stylistically and strategically unique and crafted to the highest standards that can be achieved within the Total Annihilation engine. The game is a work-in-progress with preview versions regularly released to the public as development milestones are reached. There's no telling what the final version will hold in store, but you can continue on to the Features section to learn more about what is currently available in TA Zero.

Compared to the original Total Annihilation the gameplay shifted from "macro" oriented gameplay to "micro" oriented one (do not be afraid, there still is a lot of macro involved). Every unit has to be microed differently and the terrain plays a prominent role. For example most units benefit from a high ground advantage. The game in general is more tactical and positional but still fast paced. Soft counters play a major role, while still having some hard counter units. Therefore it has a lot of aspect from other RTS games like Starcraft Broodwar or C&C mixed with the streaming-resource system, which allows you to queue production. In addition the TA engine allows you to dodge projectiles, which leads to very interesting and satisfying encounters. Although being based on a outdated engine, the visual aspects were increased (new very detailed models and handmade textures with a distinctive theme for each faction) and the controls/gui are on par with modern RTS games. A more detailed feature list can be found here: http://zero.tauniverse.com/features/. The map design is unique and beautiful. Most maps feature ground, air and naval battles and therefore lead to a very varied game with lots of different units and play styles.

Very cool, I played quite a bit of TA when I was younger.. was the first game I ever played against someone else over the internet. My favorite unit was always the Brawler.. flying ship with dual machine guns. Thanks for the post, will definitely check it out.

There is also a small mapping community on the forums.

Are those UTASP units? Also a lot of those features sound like things that were done by the YS back in the day. All good stuff, though.
I will reduce you to a series of numbers.

They are not UTASP units (UTASP) but i cant tell if some of TA Zeros units were inspired by UTASP.

HELL YEAHHHHHHHH!

one of my all time favorite game. I just wish it has a better unit movement and proper interface, but still one of the realistic RTS ever made imo. I am going to play it for sure!

Did anybody play Spring TA? It was semi-active in 2010'ish or so...pretty strange how this pops up long after it dried up (I wasn't around to witness, but I came to the forums and it was all posts from 2011)

You guys should modifity unit and building health to numeric values!

And definitely buff the building health; as far as I remember, they were falling down insanely fast.

What is the difference between Zero and Planetary Annihilation? Besides Zero having a 3rd Faction.

Its more fast paced and the resource management is different. And a different unit type/weapon type system. Most units are soft counter and its important to use them right, but some units are hard counter.

I'll ask one more stupid comparison question. How does it hold compared to the "modern" equivalents like supreme commander (1, especially, since it's the closest to TA)? I played TA a long time ago, but is there more appeal than pure nostalgia?

Anyone interested in TA-like games should check out Zero-K. I consider it to be the most balanced, and most fun spiritual successor to TA, and best of all it's completely free. Actually best of all might be the physics engine, but it's hard to describe some of the awesome things you can do with it. There is an active 1v1 community, and also large 8v8 team games that are fun and totally crazy.

My alias is Trystero there if anyone decides to check it out.

I never played SupCom in multiplayer so i cant tell much about it. I think TA Zero is more fast paced and more concentrated on micro while SupCom is mainly macro. SupCom seems to be more big scale battles (like it said i never played SupCom in multiplayer). Just try TA Zero and you will see.

I tried Zero-K and its not bad. I never liked the vast variety of units and starting build orders. Too many different factories available at start which felt very hard to scout and i had the feeling there are a lot of BO wins going on. But thats just my feeling i didnt play too many games.

The new version 4 is online now. Including several stuff like new T2 units/buildings, a megamap and an installer. Check post #1 for more details.

You need to play on Gameranger or Hamachi. I never had problems playing it online though.

Nostalgia to the max. I played this game back in 1996 or something before Core Contigency was released. I found the campaign too difficult to play as I was wayyyyy too young to play an RTS game properly.

On the TA Zero forum is a thread with replays. Unfortunatly there are not too many yet and the level of play isnt that high aswell. It might show the flow and some BOs of the game though.

smackw32.dll is missing?
These sites might be of more use than a StarCraft site, where the majority of posters look on WCIII as the dense misformed fetus produced during Blizzards latest miscarrige.

Sounds like you have installed the Patch Resources to the wrong location (and therefore the Patch itself and any mod would have followed to that wrong location).

The Patch Resources will attempt to detect your game location during install, but if your game did not get installed properly (like if you just copy/pasted the game folder to your computer, also sometimes those old CD installers just fail to properly register the game install with Windows, and the Amazon.com digital download version also doesn't install properly) then the proper location won't be found and it will just select the default of C:\Cavedog\TotalA. You need to ensure that you install the Patch Resources to your actual game folder as it says during the installation process.

So you should go to the Control Panel and uninstall both the Patch and Patch Resources and all mods, then reinstall the Patch Resources to the correct location.

A 2on2 played on River of Flames. Unfortunately the guy recording the game had low resolution settings (on higher resolution you can see much more of the battlefield and there are no minimap problems).

The original TA is enough. You need to patch to 3.1 before you install TA Zero though. Alternative you could download this:

Its totally different gameplay. The resource and the damage/armor systems are different. It has a minimap and 3 factions. The maps are more diverse, with highground etc... (i know that will be fixed in PA eventuelly).

Sounds likes a pretty good upgrade so far. Recommend buying? I think I'll play zero first and then maybe purchase PA later if its good

So i played that with a friend. It's kind of cool. Sort of different. But we played that just after playing Plannetary annihilation . Was weird playing TA again. And we didn't know what changed in that version. Turns out it was : "everything".

Fun thing to try if you're nostalgic

Best RTS-engine concerning playing feel finally gets a worthy game!

TA Zero is a total conversion for TA with focus on smaller, micro-oriented battles (whilst still allowing the big scale). And since there is a streaming-resource system, you can queue up production, which enables you to actually do all this micromanagement, without being a god in this game. This makes it very appealing for occasional play.

The original Total Annihilation had some weaknesses (like in unit design or balance), but TA Zero is a completely new game in this matter. Due to the flaws and age of his antecessor TA Zero is way less popular as it should be.

This mod is in alpha-stage, but unit-design is completed enough to be played in skirmishes via LAN or GameRanger or against a well done AI, which is actually a challenge.

The unit-handling with the TA-engine feels really good. E.g. direction of units and acceleration matters. It actually makes a huge difference whether you direct your aircraft manually, so that enemy bombers are in coverage of your fighters weapons. Also, a moving army always recieves less damage since enemy shots will miss, so you should't just plan where to park your army, but also where and how to move it during confrontations. You don't find this in other RTS like SC2.
But the original TA was never able to match with games like SC with regard to competitive/online play. Now here comes TA Zero with a completely new design, taking the good aspects of the TA-engine and integrates them into gameplay which leads to faster matches with multitasking instead of unit-massing.

I want to promote this mod not just for the benefit of the game by itself, but to give notice of it's positive gameplay-aspects, which are not to be found in other RTS. At least in terms of my personal perception of RTS-games.

Since this is so highly subjective I just want to give a short description of my taste:
I prefer the pathfinding in WC3 over SC2's. The way you handle your units in WC3 feels more natural to me. I experience them as actual individuals, blocking each other, having no perfect coordination.

If you want to get an army down a small ramp in WC3, you get the feeling that you really have to "push them through" the tight spot.
In SC2 they just flow down the ramp like water. Or marbles. It feels wrong to me. Also the box-selection-problem with hovering air units over your army feels so bad. (In TA adressed with W-key: whilst pressed you only select armed ground forces.)

Anyone, who likes the comfort of marble-units has of course totally different tast than me and will not appreciate old game-engines as I do.

For everyone that is struggling with win8..:
My friend found another workaround. He replaced the dlls audierde, online, smackw32, zdraw, zdrawbackup, zmusi and zplayx dlls by the ones in the test standalone. We have no idea what it was, but somehow we are able to run the game now in windows 8.1. Will post wether there will be any other issues.
Do any of you guys have an idea why and how it worked and what we lose by doing this?

First issue found: Can't tab out and back in again.

Which version did you install initially? The one from the homepage alpha 4? I recommend using the Test standalone, because it includes new units, bug fixes and balance changes.

Due to having a really bad upload in my new flat it took a while to upload those...
Two vods of one and the same game (recorded replay):
Vohs view:

My view:

Not the best game we played (both playing their worst faction with lots of unspent metal :p), still fun though.

First game I ever owned (I was a bit too young/silly for it at the time so gave up on it after a couple of weeks struggling with the campaign), still have the carton box in my old bedroom, props for reviving it!

Is it really worth modding a game this old? The pathfinding is extremely bad (dragoon simulator) and the UI is not at all designed for higher resolution screens. You could do so much more with a remake, adding on two decades of game design polish. There's also 1-2 orders of magnitude more processing power available to do a lot of the tasks impossible on pentium I-II cpu's and the graphics processors of the day without compromising the high performance levels in the engine

Yes it is still worth it. The bunch of new rts games released recently with new engine just failed to deliver. I prefer a good made RTS with an old engine instead of fancy graphics but sucky balance and/or gameplay.

Yes i've played TA and TAUCP for a few hundred hours, was one of my first RTS and i got armies stuck in my base, behind my base, on a bridge halfway across the map, in a field of wrecks etc in probably most games

I loved it but it's 2015 now

Thats nice that you played ages ago. But the pathfinding alrogithm was significantly improved by modders the last years. Especially Zero has a much better pathfinding and in Zero T1 wreckages do not block movement (only projectiles). I never had any problems with pathfinding in Zero. You should really try Zero before you bash on it. I am always up for 1on1s. Just message me.

there was never any tools to improve the pathfinding in some other games like BW

Woah! This is very interesting!!! I played quite a bit of TA including lots of 1v1 vs friend. Made quite a few nice maps. Some aspects of this game are great but it is broken by terrible balance, we were playing around with removing some units to make it better. I'm totally going to check this out!!!

a Quote from the tauniverse forum:
they improved pathfinding a lot!

1333 cycles (default):

Name: 1333.png Views: 886 Size: 35.2 KB
At the default value, the pathfinding is horrible. At any given moment the majority of units are not in motion and are waiting for an updated path. Here it is clear why I was saying issue #2 is the major issue. The units towards the back of the group, where most of the bumping occurs, perform ridiculously poorly. Even though at the 60 second mark the group appears to be moving decently well, that's just due to the luck of the units at the front not bumping into each other as much. At the 3 minute mark a large chunk of units is still at the starting point and it takes a whopping 10 minutes to finish and there are still a few stragglers that still haven't made it yet.

5332 cycles (4x default):

Name: 5332.png Views: 902 Size: 35.1 KB
At 5332 cycles there is a massive increase in performance, but still far from adequate. There are still plenty of stationary units at any given time. However as you can see, the group is generally moving much more smoothly and finishes the race over twice as fast as they did at the default value.

13330 cycles (10x default):

Name: 13330.png Views: 890 Size: 29.3 KB
At 13330 cycles there is another huge improvement, though a little less than before. Most units are now in motion at any given time though there's still room to improve. The group finishes the race almost twice as fast as the last attempt.

39990 cycles (30x default):

Name: 39990.png Views: 891 Size: 29.2 KB
At 39990 cycles we've basically reached an optimum point. No unit ever has a downtime of more than 1 or 2 seconds and the group moves very smoothly, with no unit ever colliding with anything other than another moving unit. The group finishes just over a whole minute faster than the last group.

66650 cycles (50x default):

Name: 66650.png Views: 914 Size: 29.0 KB
At 66650 cycles we can see that pathfinding improvements at this scale, with 1500 moving units, have basically plateaued. The group basically finishes at the same amount of time as before, with the 5 second difference falling within the margin of error for me deciding when the group at "arrived". However, as explained above, for more complex operations than simply moving a group from one point to another (like how you would see in a real game with many different orders being given to different groups of units) there are some small improvements to pathfinding update time and the hardware hit is still small compared to the rendering workload, so I think that 66650 is a much better optimal value to use due to the breathing room it affords.

So 66650 cycles is the value we will use for TA Zero and is probably a good optimal value for most people. The 5332 value is definitely too low. Finally, while you can go even higher, there is not too much benefit and you may end up just wasting resources and causing unnecessary slowdowns, even when there are few units in-game.

1333 cycles is the OTA default setting. 66650 cycles is used by TA Zero

Well that's a thousand times better

At the 3 minute mark a large chunk of units is still at the starting point and it takes a whopping 10 minutes to finish and there are still a few stragglers that still haven't made it yet.

Vs having the whole army there in under 2 minutes

I remember downloading the TA demo a long long time ago and giving it a go for a small duration of time before moving on. This looks like fun though I have to ask, just how much of a change from the original is the link in the OP? I mean, adding a whole new faction is pretty big lol but aside from that, are the other factions still the same as originally designed? Is it mostly performance fixes and a new faction then?

edit: reading more about it, seems that TAK, the expansion had several new factions added in so I take it this changed the original TA, not TAK.

It is a total overhaul. The factions are different to the originals. Although some units have at least a similar design.
Just download the standalone (link in post #1).
Yes it is a total conversion mod for TA not TAK.

New experimantel changes incoming. Some new units and a total rebalance is incoming. Although the balance was quite good the factions were to similar and the creator decided to make them more diverse.

A bunch of new vods from one of the early rebalance versions:

The short parts I checked were enough to notice the Recorder bug that lets you see the top left with a ghost Commander.

#zero is still there even though you requested me to delete it (I just made it invisible now ). If anyone wants to view the old messages just PM (here or there). You can still use #mods nonetheless!

There is a new version around Alpha 5 with tons of balance updates, fixes, new maps and new units.
There are also new casted games:

By the way, there is a new server for Total Annihilation and all its major mods available now:
https://www.taforever.com/

It even has an installer and updater included, helping you to install mods like Zero.
