I havent played this game since it came out and havent really been keeping track of the development. Could somebody tell me if items respawn now? When it came out, they would only spawn when the server was started. Did they change this?

Yes loot respawns, it's fairly new feature and the exact method was not published by devs for obvious reasons. The best guess is this.

Items are not persistent on live build but they are persistent on experimental, so it's already there, they are just polishing stuff out. You can play experimental by changing properties of DayZ on your steam.
Tents are in both versions but pitching one on live is pointless, obviously.
They spawn in hunting huts all over the map.

I can't run this on my laptop, (i5 3210M, 8gb ram, Geforce 635m ), even with all the settings turned way down low so that the game looks ass. Is it expected to be optimised further? Otherwise it's rather disappointing

Yes it's terribly optimized. Yes they are working on it, right now they are porting the whole thing to DX11 and yes it will take a lot of time (few months)

PS4? At the rate at which they are working on the game it will be PS5 at the earliest.

It shouldn't even be going to any consoles. Its not even fucking finished. Its still in Alpha - Early Access. Been like that for like what? A year?

Their main priority should be finishing the damn game on the PC before trying to make even more money off an unfinished product by having it go to consoles.

Given how well it works on PC, the port is gonna be fucking hilarious. It's incredible how they can keep a straight face doing random bullshit instead of fixing the actual game. I mean c'mon, it took them 1 year to make a drag and drop inventory, the game still has terrible performance and is barely playable, how are they going to make that work on a console? Not even talking about how the features everybody is waiting for aren't coming...

Sadly if you read around various gaming websites and check the comments for the news posts about this... you'll see a bunch of "AWESOME! THIS GAME IS ALREADY INCREDIBLE ON PC AND I CANT WAIT TO PLAY IT ON CONSOLE!". Hell, even reading the Steam comments... 99% of them are nothing but high praise for the game in its current state.

Gamers these days...

The game hasn't even been out for a year yet. Only 8 months so far. No offense, but I guess you don't really understand/know how game development works to say that they do random bs instead of fixing the game. The alpha is there to break the game while adding new stuff to it, not to fix everything that is broken right now to please the players. People who don't understand that shouldn't have bought the game in the first place. Yes the development might be slow a little, but so far they are doing a decent job. Yes the game has terrible performance but it's not even optimize yet, that will be done later down the road, most likely during beta.

So yeah people who complain mostly don't have a clue on how game development works and bought the game without even trying to understand it. If you expected a playable beta when you bought the game, then blame yourself, not the devs.

You seem to be the one that doesn't understand. First off, the Alpha has been public for 8 months. The game has been in development for twice that long.

Secondly, the game uses a fork of the Arma II engine so the content that is currently in the game is basically copy/pasted over from the mod. They have done very, very little work on the game.

Lastly, the mod has been around for years now so it's not like the developers don't know what they want their game to be.

You must be one of those "fanboys" they've managed to create already, and good for you. But don't come here defending a piece of shit just because you're in love with it for whatever reason. People like you are the reason why we get awful games in the first place, because you just bend over and take it then proclaim "DONT WORRY GUYS ITS OK". It's not.

The game has been in Steam top sellers since the day it became available. So yeah, it's not shit. It hasn't become what many (including me) had hoped, but it isn't a shit game by any stretch of the imagination. If it was shit, the DayZ mod would be considered garbage as well.

Your argument for why the game can't be bad is because it sold a lot of initial copies? Diablo 3 would like to have a word with you and explain what "riding the coattails" means. The standalone sold because the mod was good; not because it was good itself.

Then you have the nerve to claim that it can't be bad because the mod is good? Seriously, what the fuck? The mod is good because it has ten times as many features, isn't buggy, and is actually a solid game - everything the standalone is NOT.

I mean come on; if you're going to argue for the game being good at least back it up with something halfway intelligent.

That's a really weak argument for why the game is not bad. Not saying that it is, but being a best seller on steam is not saying very much, other than there's a whole lot of hype. That can be good or bad.

People are way more lenient with mods than they are with actual games. Mods are made by fans, and are usually small projects with no financial gain involved whatsoever. Full games, on the other hand, have a full development team and are sold for money. Thus the expectations are (or should be) far different. Dayz was perfectly fine as a mod. Sure, it was incredibly buggy and had so many annoying little details and it was full of hackers, but it was still a whole lot of fun. The game, on the other hand.. is practically the same as the mod, only it costs money. And that's just not good enough.

The whole "it's an alpha" argument is void as well as soon as you start taking money for it. I admire the dayz guys for being so honest in telling people not to buy it, but, ultimately, they do sell it. Frankly, dayz looks like one of these "development hell" games that are unlikely to ever make it out of beta. Back in the day, that would mean the game would be developed for years, and then it would be cancelled. Today, it means the game sells hundreds of thousands of copies, and then it gets cancelled. I'd love to be proven wrong on this, since I'd actually love to play the damn game, but I don't see it being actually finished anytime soon.

Let me preface this by asking, why are you angry?

Anyway. Steam topsellers lists games that are most sold currently, that's why most of the list is occupied by new games. With DayZ being there people are obviously still buying it. If it's so blatantly apparent that the game is shit, why are people still buying it? Could it be because of the generally positive reviews from people who are playing it (You can check Steam reviews or Metacritic if you don't believe me)?

DayZ mod has more stuff yeah, but calling it a polished product (that's what you are doing) is to have never played it at all. Funny you should mention Diablo 3. Like are you seriously saying that it's a shit game? Apart from it's horrendous launch and the epic fail of the RMAH it's a damn good game. It isn't what people expected it to be but it was a great game back then and even better now.

If you are going to keep being rude, I won't even reply to you anymore.

Hm I'm pretty sure they said they worked on the network and UI things for a year prior to the early access release. To be honest I'm a REALLY big fan of DayZ and I played the crap out of both the mod and the standalone, so I'm not bashing it just because I hate the game, but because I hate that they ruined a great opportunity to make an awesome game because they stubbornly decided to keep their shitty engine (both client and server are still in an awful state and I doubt it'll ever get that much better) and made lots of design decision that ruined what was fun in the mod (the dynamic between spawn points, looting points and PvP points is the biggest example in my opinion).
I have obviously no clue about how game development works, but at this point I can't really buy in the "it's an alpha" argument. The only big praise I would give them would go to the art and mapping team, but the coding and design of the game hasn't improved since the release much if at all, the game is still plagued by ridiculous bugs, performance and gameplay issue, and at this point isn't much more fun to play than at release. Now of course I understand it's an early access and I'm the only one to blame if I feel like I got fucked buying it, but as I said what saddens and angers me is that they had the chance to make something wonderful out of the standalone and so far failed in every aspect.

I really doubt the game has been in development for twice that long, would like to see your source on that.

Sure the game use the Arma 2 engine, but a modified one. They have redone/improved a good portion of the code so no, they haven't done very little work like you seem to think. Just because it doesn't show ingame while you play doesn't mean they haven't done some heavy work on it. Also, bear in mind that they didn't have the man power they have now, they are still an indie company with a huge project in their hands.

I'm not a fanboy by any means. I just understand what I've bought as opposed to the "haters" that bash the game for being in an alpha state aka broken state. I fail to understand how a game in alpha could be considered "a piece of shit" when it's still in development, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. You can't judge a game that isn't complete, it's as dumb as buying a car that is in the process of being built but then cry about the fact that is doesn't have wheels yet. And the real reason why we get awful games is because people are ready to buy anything that is hyped without informing themselves in the first place and then they realize they made a mistake but prefer to blame the people who made the game instead of themselves. It's always easier to blame others.
