It could be that someone else has looted it before me, but I find that unlikely, since I've gone through some of the apartments just east of Balota a few times, and found nothing, but then the two supermarkets in the same area were completely untouched and full of food. Where should I be looking in them?
You talking about houses in general or the big apartment blocks? The latter have one spawn point each I think, at the very top in the elevator shaft. Complete waste of time checking.
Yeah, I'm talking about the larger apartments that are ~5 stories or so, with about 4 apartments per story, with each having a balcony.
There's also the problem with the ladders, as you tend to simply fall off them when you reach the top. All that risk for one spawn point with maybe something at the very top. I'd shy away if I where you
I'm sure this is uniteresting to everyone but I need to recount my tale of true failure somewhere. My friend and I just embarked on a long long journey over the course of the weekend, see the image for the route we took. http://i.imgur.com/gWiU4EO.jpg
We both have maybe 5 hours experience in the game so not complete noobs but not expert either. After doing that entire path (blue was my navigation, red him) we encountered 2 people only despite joining only full servers. We killed one and the other we actually traded with which was cool. We were fully geared with all camo, tactical vests, mosins food water etc.
After clearing the north east airfield we gave up on our trek and decided to head back to the coast to find people and we ran across that huge ship split in half on the shoreline. What happened next is that he went up on one side, I went up on the other where I actually ran into a guy who logged out shortly after avoiding a fight. I didn't know this at the time and I went to switch ships sides to my friend and the controls bugged out on me and I ended up running off the barge and died. I respawned, ran all the way back but my body was gone by then. My friend who was above guarding then walked off the ship and died...
All that running for that ending, lesson learned avoid that boat lol.
I've done the same run Scrandom. It was actually enjoyable (although I was alone) and I never saw anyone. But it was interesting to see the different places and seeing what else was out there. I noticed a lot more cars up North compared to the south.
What annoys me the most and hopefully gets fixed with the big patch is making swapping weapons (or pulling them out) more seamless. Last night I was sniping and had a prestine PU on my mosine, both pistols with ammo (an ammo box), enough food and drink to feed an army and I ended up dying by a crowbar. The guy took forever to knock me out but I couldn't pull my weapon out in time. I do not mind dying from my own mistake or just being bettered but that annoyed me (had to ragequit after that).
I sort of wish there were test dummies of some sort so can practice sniping across long distances. Honing distance can be difficult when dealing with real people without practice. Almost need to hire friends to be target dummies or something

I'll say about Starbound since it's the only one i own. If you compare Terraria to Starbound, Terraria feels more calm and it's easier and kind of funnier. Starbound is cool but it REALLY look like a SNES platform game (+crafting). Not saying the game is bad (and it's quite stable for an alpha). Also it's not really comparable with DayZ or Rust. It's a faster terraria that feels more about combat than crafting;
You can also take a look at 7 days to die (basicly rust but more minecrafty without the minecraft graphics). I didn't try it though.
From what i hear from my friends DayZ and Rust have their fans and their haters. It's like there's no middle ground. They love it or they hate it.
Yeah I think you have to choose for yourself. People telling you to pick one or the other will be biased, you should watch streams and decide for yourself. By the way, are windows still stopping/deviating bullets? I shot a guy in a control tower, I was zeroed pretty correctly and he was not moving, still it didn't hit him :< In the mod it was impossible to aim at someone though windows, I wonder if it's still the case..

You can always snipe zombies, my group does it all the time, it is also a lot of fun to watch a person fight a zombie and then shoot the zombie and instead of them being happy you helped they start to zig-zag around like a madman
I just died the most infuriating death ever. We went to balota to kill server hoppers as we were geared, my friend sniping/spotting on a building roof and me going in with my m4. So he spots this guy and hits him one time, and the guy hides near the wooden fence between the airfield and the road. I was in the tents looting accessories, so he tells me where he is and I go to finish him. I hear him grunting in pain, finds a hole in the fence, find him in a bush. He wasn't moving or anything which was odd, so I start shooting. The bullets wouldn't go though the 3 damn bushes, except one. Yeah cause you know, armored bushes best bushes. So I go around the shrubbery to have only one bush between me and him, and just as I was about to shoot he start moving again. I shoot, the brush deflects my bullets again, he shoots and kills me instantly. FUUUUUUU Why would bushes stop bullets seriously. It also happened that when shooting prone my bullets would stop right in front of me as if they hit something. Guess I'll post on their forums or something x_x
Pretty bummed out about the direction the stand alone has taken.
I was hoping the gun mechanics would stay roughly the same but instead they add the wonky system where you need to find parts of the weapon for it to function even remotely well. Imagine trying to find a receiver for an m4 or something when there are the same amount of guns as the mod. I would lose my shit.
Same thing with blood transfusions. Needing to test for blood type is ridiculous sure it's realistic but how does that add to the enjoyment of the game. Then you need can openers for cans of food. You can't just carry bandages you need to tear up clothes for some reason. The amount of overly complicated stuff is getting ridiculous. Focus on fixing the actual game instead of adding a bunch of random mechanics that don't add anything to the game other than frustration.
The only things they have done are chance the zombie ai (which is broken as fuck) and add some more buildings. Totally not worth the months and months of waiting....
I understand that it is only an alpha and I expected a level of glitchyness but it pisses me off the direction they are taking the game and how poorly they have executed it. I really do genuinely hope I am wrong and I just need to get used to the stand alone but if they keep doing what they are doing it will be a major let down.

Then make a post or post in a thread about it, it's alpha for a reason man. I'm very sure there are people that think similarly about guns (the gun mods aren't actually a problem, there is actually a random drift added to gun accuracy and it isn't using the Arma system for gun accuracy).

I like the modular system on guns a lot don't get me wrong but I don't understand the need for all the added complexity when they put in the different parts of the gun. I think just having the ability to pop on a suppressor or a sight of some kind would be very cool but then they added the requirements for different parts and it just keeps getting more and more complicated.
I really don't like the new system of aim if that's how it works. It reminds me of suppression mechanic in BF3 and how badly that pissed people off. I couldn't imagine lining up what should be an easy kill and then being killed by a RNG aiming system on a fully kitted char. Nothing is more frustrating than having bullets not go where they should even with a super degraded gun it would still shoot straight. Maybe making the gun jam would make more sense and would be less frustrating.
Honestly I can't be bothered to post I doubt it would change anything they clearly have sunk nearly a year adding these mechanics and I don't think they would be willing to take it out. All that they would probably be willing to do is slightly tweak numbers.
I might just be a negative nancy but seeing how awful the new hitman was really made me nervous for DayZ. I was just curious as to what the TL community thought more than anything. My circle of DayZ buddies have really disliked it also and I just wanted to hear something positive.

I think you may be taking it a bit to the extreme. Even without the parts of the gun being pristine, they are still usable. You are not forced into searching for better quality parts, but it does help. The real parts that require better quality tend to be the scopes (anything under worn tend to be more of a hinderance). When using the M4 (although I prefer the mosin), I like finding other parts in the barracks and other M4's and essentially upgrading mine. Hell, even parts that are heavily damaged still can be used to kill people.

I think transfusion as a whole is nice but the blood type does seem a bit too much. With that said, there have been times when bambis and other players are rounded up just so search for the right blood type. It gives the players another way of playing. I just think blood loss as a whole exasperates the transfusion. Getting blood back seems extremely difficult at times (recovery times) and without saline, you are screwed. I think if the blood recovery was adjusted a bit, the transfusion would not feel as bad.
May I ask why you cannot just carry bandages? With medkits, you can carry many bandages. The necessity to tear clothing is for those in the beginning that have to deal with zombies. While gearing up, getting bandages takes the place of tearing clothes. So I do not get your complaint of clothe tearing.
Also bear in mind, the game wont be released for more than a year so a lot will change. More weapons, more zombies (fixing them too), vehicles, bug fixes, multithread support, etc. Complaints are fine so long as they are constructive and used to improve the game.
Edit: Oh forgot to add, you do not need a can opener. It makes life easier but it is not necessary. Axes, knives, screw driver, etc. can be used to open. You wont get 100% of the food but with the amount of soda and food in the game on average, you should be fine. Plus, canned tuna do not even require any can opener. Same with cereal and rice,

Biggest problem with blood types is that blood type testers are incredibly rare. I've found more maps than I have of that stuff. Other than that I like most changes in the standalone. Just fix up spawn points, bugs, dynamic spawning, add a bunch more items and fix the zombie ai, and we're golden imo.

Blood bags in general are just not needed. With how easy it is to regen blood and health just by staying well fed and hydrated there is no need to mess with blood transfers. Saline bags are useful in a pinch, but they aren't really necessary or as useful as blood bags are in the mod. That being said, I really enjoy the complexity of the new health system as it adds a lot more incentive to loot towns often for food/water/med supplies. This will help keep people moving and not just camping the same towns/airfields all the time.

It's still the arma server browser, kind of not good. So, yeah you have to look at/for the title of the server you want to join.
Man this game is frustrating, unload half a clip of m4 10 feet away from a guy where I most definitely got the first shot then suddenly 1 mosin shot and I'm dead.
