People liked the naval battles the most about AC3 (which sadly turned out to mostly be a mess), so they give us a game based on pirates. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

The naval missions were cool, but the majority of the missions were short. One of the missions was very frustrating if you wanted to get 100% sync, which was taking out 3 enemy ships by hitting the weak spot (if you upgraded your boat ram you're screwed).
Ubisoft said that whenever they introduce a new character from a different time period, it would be a numbered game. In this case, I wish the number 4 was not in the title. The title "Assassin's Creed: Black Flag" has a cooler and better ring to it. I am surprise that we will be following and playing Edward Kenway (father of Haytham and grandfather of Connor) since fans of the universe already know what happens to him unless they retcon... I wished we got more of Connor since he was not developed as much as the previous ancestors. I honestly liked him the most out of Altair and Ezio. Alex Hutchinson said there won't be a Brotherhood/Revelations type of game for Connor, but I think there will be in the future since they said the same thing about Ezio after the sequel was released.
I hope they don't follow the steps of ACIII. I really didn't enjoy it at all. Heck, I don't even want to finish it. I enjoy the mechanics, but the flow of the game just feels way off. Connor's personality was also not that great.

I think some are already burned out since Revelations. There has been a new game almost every year minus the gap from the first game to the second.

The problem was that the developers made the development of Connor in the side missions such as the Homestead missions. That is where you see his personality shine more. From a casual gamer's view, it is easy to end up not liking Connor since the majority of the time he is a naive, impatient, and an angry person. Most of the time he is yelling at someone and yelling the name of "WHERE IS CHARLES LEEEEEEE?!"
Personally I think it's a pretty meh idea. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they can make a ridiculously awesome pirate game with a similar engine, but it would have so much more potential as a true pirate game (a new IP) than a sequel to AC. Hell, make a really good AC game on the one hand, and make a really good pirate game on the other.

I did those missions and still thought Connor was a terrible character. He was just a simplistic kid who when compared to Ezio and Altier is just a massive failiure.
Tbh, this seems a bit hasty. I expected a couple of AC3 "expansions" like they did with AC2 to milk some more money out of it and flesh out Connor a bit more. Oh well, I'm still probably gonna buy this game.

Ubisoft has already said they won't go into ninja stuff because it's been overdone or some bs. After seeing this gallery: http://chaoyuanxu.deviantart.com/gallery/ I really wish they would do something in China
Yeah, the thing is that when was there a good game about ninjas and samurais this generation? Not many I can think of. And no, I don't consider Ninja Gaiden since that is a different type of game. I would love a game taking place somewhere in Asia. The character does not necessary need to be a ninja or samurai. In AC1, there were 3 factions: Assassins, Saracens, and Templars. They can do that too in an Asian setting like Assassins, Ninjas, and Samurais. These pictures would be awesome if it was given the Assassin's Creed treatment...
AC3 was the first AC game i have played and the ending was lackluster. I liked the whole native american vendetta idea but Connor was constantly being played and/or used.
I feel like Connor wasn't a bad character in theory; the dev team just never let him grow into a memorable role.
The trailer for the game leaked briefly a few hours ago, it has since been taken down. It was CGI only but looks fun. It is definitely Conner's grandfather.

Hope AC4 is better!
Yeah, the developers did not do a good job growing Connor. He had potential to be a character that will be unique from Desmond's other ancestors. Some fans defend Connor being played or used since he came from another culture. Despite him being half European and half Native American, he had more exposure to his Native American roots. He never thought he was being manipulated. The player can already tell he was naive when you first encounter Achilles. Their conversation alone just showed how much Connor needs to learn. Of course over time you just shake your head how Connor falls for the same trick over and over.
This is a pretty good tribute video.

It has been confirmed it is Haytham's father and Connor's grandfather ever since the first leaked image appeared.
Ubisot cannot stop the leaks. The trailer has been leaked and I'm quite surprised because they always saved the CGI trailer for E3. I was expecting a short teaser trailer like they did for AC3.

It's Edward Kenway... and it's been confirmed since the leak. Why would they have Edward on the game's cover when the main character is Blackbeard?
So this sequel is essentially going to be in the same vein as Brotherhood and Revelations. Exactly the same game but with a different skin in a different setting. This is the first time they've had the gall to rush the release in a year but slap a number in the title.

New details on the game since today was the official reveal. No gameplay footage, but just summaries of what the press saw. It is the same fashion with any reveal with the AC games.
- Freedom underpins everything in Assassin's Creed 4.
- There are eight studios working on the game. Ubisoft Montreal is leading, with Singapore, Sofia, Annecy, Kiev, Quebec, Bucharest, and Montpellier assisting.
- AC4 is set in the West Indies in 1715, the world is totally seamless.
- There are 50 unique locations including cities, jungles, ruins, coves, and caves, all with hidden treasure and adventure.
- You can harpoon whales, go diving, and loot ships
- There will be proper assassinations with targets that you choose how to approach and take out. Think of how AC1 was where you investigate, research the surrounding area, and plan how to execute your mission.
- You'll fight against, and alongside, infamous brigands like Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach, Benjamin Hornigold, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny.
- Major cities include Kingston and Havana, and there'll be dozens of smaller settlements and port towns scattered around the world to explore and pick up missions from.
- The new hero is Edward Kenway, who is the father of AC3's Haytham and grandfather to Connor. He is selfish, cocky, and charismatic. Think Ezio Mark II in a sense. Whether that is good or bad is up to the player's liking.
- Edward owns his own ship, the Jackdaw. It can be upgraded, repaired, and customized, and you can manage her crew.
- As you sail the high seas you can climb the crow's nest and use a spyglass to search for ships on the horizon. This tells you how strong they are and what cargo they're hauling.
- Weather and physics will play a larger role in naval combat like in AC3
- There are different classes of enemy ship, including 'chargers' who'll try and ram you and shatter your hull.
- There aren't any interruptions in the transition between naval combat and boarding a ship
- You can approach ships from any angle, weaken them with your cannons, then attach grapples to pull them towards you and storm the deck. Or swim around the back unnoticed and slit the captain's throat for the stealth-loving players.
- Instead of Desmond, the modern day is centered around you, a 'research analysts' working at Abstergo and living out the past Edward Kenway,
- Many of the multiplayer modes from previous games will return.
- It all looks fantastic. The waves are especially impressive, tossing ships around as lightning streaks across the sky. It is tweaked from what was in AC3.
- Footage shown was likely running on a development PC like most demonstrations now days.
- Ubisoft are planning an 'enhanced' PlayStation 4 version that will make use of the new controller, and have much better visuals
- To the point where Edward can simply dive off of his ship, swim to the shore of one of 50 or so locations in the Caribbean, and explore. No loading. No segmented feeling.
- It’s a bit reassuring that many of the developers from the acclaimed Far Cry 3 have joined in with the Black Flag crew, which explains you having the freedom to hunt sea animals.
- harpooning (water-based hunting) to exploring underwater environments
- Your goal with any ship-to-ship fight is to eliminate the other captain. How you do this is entirely up to you.
- The best example of this comes with the series' familiar notoriety system. Previous games would base enemy interaction on how discreet or blatant you were in terms of city navigation and combat. Kill someone in direct sight of the city guard, for example, and you’d quickly find yourself wanted by the authorities. In Black Flag, this system has been tossed out.
- The team seems genuinely interested in not only providing a new, naval-based, open world experience, but finding a better lead character, and fixing some of the faulty missions and gameplay systems from the past.
In regards of next generation consoles
"In addition to improved graphics and physics, the next-gen versions will allow players new 'Connected features' that will make him feel, even if he plays in single player, it will be better to have a 'single Connected Player' be. This means that next-gen consoles allow players to have a solo experience, the benefits from the presence of a large community. "
I hope they don't turn into a COD machine churning out games constantly. Its getting old and I really like the AC series....I do understand having one release with the PS4 though.
Only played AC2 and felt like I had seen everything the serie had to offer after finishing that. Although this pirate stuff seems like it could be a lot of fun.
However I don't like that it was announced almost straight after AC3 release, and there was that PS Vita AC as well. Feels like they are milking the serie for all it's worth.

Money. Also notice the "exclusive editions" with "extra 60 minutes of gameplay". I freaking hate what game market is devolving into... Where are the good old times where you got a full game when you bought it, without all the DLC (and first day DLC wtf) crap and what not.
I'm not even going to go into the story, its way too good/complicated to talk about i think.. But as far as assassin's creed 3, the ship battles and the mechanics involved were golden. I was pretty disappointing that it wasn't an integral part of the story more less optional. I even really quickly thought what if you have the ship more customizable such as with Villa Auditore, and had a crew you hire and level up like in brotherhood or revelations, or even with their own back-story like in 3.
I really want to be able to control the direction of the ship in some sort of larger sandbox ocean or sea segments. Move around the ship while its sailing and interact with it and the crew. Set out anchor and treasure hunt, or board another ship and pillage. Really, with how cool the naval battles were in 3, i think they can make the best assassin's creed yet with some pirate stuff.
World premier of AC4's gameplay and it looks more polished than AC3 in terms of graphics. I am very eager to see the next generation version of this game.
I don't want to get my hopes up, but this game looks much better than AC3 so far, basically what I expected AC3 to actually be. Much more polish and learned from the issues that AC3 suffered from. Also probably a better character too.
On March 30 2013 08:28 Chillax wrote: I'm curious if the protagonist is actually going to be an Assassin or just someone who uses their skills.
Considering that Edward is a pirate trained by Assassins, I can see him being like Ezio and Connor. Both used the Assassins to achieve their goal. The difference between Ezio and Connor is that Ezio stepped up to the mantle of being the leader of the Roman Assassins and eventually the Mentor to all the Italian Assassins. We do not know Connor's life after the events of AC3 so far, but I would assume he did the same since the Assassins in North America was almost extinct, which left Achilles to be the last surviving Assassin (Templars spared his life out of mercy and pity, but only if he stops being an Assassin and training new apprentices).

Don't get your hopes up. The game was being developed concurrent with AC3. The problems that AC3 has a chance of being in AC4. If by better character you mean an Ezio copy, then sure. Nothing new.

Isn't it being pushed to next gens though? I mean, the major issue(s) I had with AC3 were primarily graphical issues. Really the main reason I stopped playing it at some point. Took me out of it. If those were resolved I would have had a fine time with AC3, even if it wasn't as good as some of its predecessors on other levels.
I could not even play more than 2-3 hours of AC3 without dying cause of boredom. I can't believe that there are people who still want to play this terrible terrible Game. Every Year they release the same fucking Game AGAIN!

Yeah, it's going to be on next gen consoles, but footage of it haven't been shown yet. Since the game is being on all platforms, you can expect some of the same problems until we get a full fledged next gen game.

Different tastes. People can say the same thing about Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2. Besides some of the new changes, the core game is still there, which you can say the same about almost any other game in their respective series.
Overall, the game is better than AC3 in terms of story and stealth, but some of the bugs/glitches in AC3 is still in AC4... As for the main character, Edward Kenway, he is a good character. They handled him much better than Connor, who I thought had potential, but was wasted.
I could do nothing but sail on open water for hours in this game. Half the game is usual Assassins Creed and you already know if you like/hate that. The other half is pure awesome pirate shit.
Looks like the sort of game I'd maybe pick up in a year or so when it was £20 if I had nothing else to do, which is unlikely.
Not that it looks bad, but nothing about it jumps out as essential and from what I've read there's a lot of filler and 'stuff' to do which lacks context. The pirate stuff looks cool but I can see it getting stale after a while as the ships seem kinda small and there doesn't appear to be much in terms of strategy and mechanics to taking them over.
Time will always tell if I'm wrong though but I think this generation is going to see open world stuff explode in quality so I'm sceptical that these last-gen games will stand the test of time.
How does the game run on PS4 ? My biggest grips I had with AC2 and AC2B on PS3 was that the game had huge FPS drops and constant slow loadings making me rage hard when I had to replay sections. Playing Revelations on my computer felt so much better. But for AC4 I don't know how my PC would fare compared to a PS4 so I'm wondering if the game is smoothed and fast loading on that one.
Most of the reviews for the PS4 version have been very positive. The difference between the PS3 and PS4 isn't huge because Ubisoft stated that the game was built for current gen in mind, but the game does look nicer on the PS4, of course. The PS3 version is similar to AC3's problems with fps drops here and there, sound cutting out sometimes, background music disappearing and then reappearing later, etc. AC4 does look better than AC3 since you're exploring tropical islands, sailing across the oceans, etc. AC4's cities have a little more color compared to AC3's Boston and New York. They just announced that the PS4 version will receive 1080P support
The PlayStation 4 version of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will run at a native 1080p resolution, but will require a title update to do so, according to an update on the official Ubisoft blog.
Without the patch, Assassin's Creed 4 will render at 900p and be upscaled to 1080p resolution on PS4. Ubisoft communications manager Gary Steinman explains why there's a discrepancy between the game that shipped and the title update Ubisoft is rolling out after launch.
