It all depends on your players, but I'm using a 4-5-1 with the 4-2-3-1 deep as my backup tactic. In my main game in the German 3.Liga I favored a 4-1-2-1-2 diamond setup, then I switched to a 4-5-1 with eight games left in my second season, because I had nothing else to play for and wanted to experiment, and I realized I had all the pieces for it, except a left winger so I ended up training one of my center fielders into one, and he's got six assists in seven games, leading the league.
Now in the third season after seven games my team is 4-3-0, the only unbeaten team left, and outscoring my opponents 12-4.
With the pep talks try to generally encourage your team before games, and keep encouraging them if they play well. If you get stomped then I find the assertive "I'm far from pleased with that result" talk to be effective. If you lose a close game don't chastise your team, use like the calm/assertive talk about being unlucky, it seems to inspire the players pretty well.
I would stay away from the "aggressive" section, because I find it almost always leads to bad things, mainly media reports about how you yelled at the team in the locker room after the game, which never helps your image or team chemistry at all.
This is my first football manager game, but with how long the series has been around I'm sure there is a guide for when it's appropriate to use which pep talk somewhere on the internet.

I'm playing with Arsenal, but I'm doing really poorly in both of my games; in one, I'm playing 4-4-2 and in the other 4-5-1. Does anyone have any general or specific tips?
What tactics should I use? Any really good micro tactics (such as let this player have this special order)? Any player that's really good to buy?

If you buy from Green Man Gaming, you can get a key which will activate via Steam (hopefully), so you don't have to buy directly through Steam.

ah, i love this series so much. had to take a break in december, but will play again in january. i love playing with manfield.
a bit disappointed that the 'interact with press' part seems really uninspiring still. anyone found any new young talent yet? this 'scott rogers' guy has been playing brilliantly for me in mansfield, and has developed really well. he is dear to me now.

hmm. i thought it was worth it. but i'd pay for the same game with a new db. i don't use the graphics in game.

They've pretty much overhauled the match engine. Players now have collision detection to prevent them from running through each other, the ball is affected a lot better by wind and swerves more noticeably. A good chunk of stuff like that.
If you still don't have it though, I would wait until the next update (the winter transfers one). The match engine stuff still isn't perfect, defending can still be kind of ehh..., but you can definitely see that it has come a long way (especially when comparing it to the beta that you got if you preordered the game. OMG the crazy shit that happened in it!).

This is my first FM game, and the defending has gotten much better for me with all the patches. They've done a great job with supporting the game so far. The only complaint I have now is when one attacker can somehow get the ball from a cross or pass when there are 8/9+ defenders in the box. And sometimes the keepers don't even react to shots.

I bought this game today and i'm excited to play it, mainly because of PETs video series. He's playing the game with depth and passion, so cheers to him!

I always get slightly addicted to the FM games and FM2013 hasn't been any different. Been playing on one file with a swedish lower league team (ÖIS) and one with AFC Wimbledon for a while and just recently decided to play a team that at least has a chance to win some international comps and I settled with Southampton. So much fun :D

Anyone here with a lot of experience in this game and willing to share? I am playing a bit again, but the team is playing really weird and i have no idea how to compensate for that
Playing Create a club, brought a team from german Bezirksliga into second devision, last season i got 6th, which i don't have problems with, but my team does. I always tried to buy young talents and overall the team is quite young, so all the bigger fish try to buy my players and everyone wants to play higher, but then they completely fuck up their games. I got the biggest problem, that my midfield is basically playing horrible all the time, i am something about 4th or 4th in teamstrength, but i either win barely or lose really hard. Overall it feels like the game wants to punish me for waving me through 7 leagues before and now has enough of this shit. I also can't play 3D-Mode, because even the best defenders just won't do anything, they often let the opponent run past them and then it's a coinflip. The enemy never does that, so....eh? Also, my wing layers, who should essentially play better then 90 % of all enemies usually play with 4-4,5 ratings and i have 5 of them to get one that works. They all don't. If i play 3D-mode, they are basically not in the game, even though the tactis are set to wings, the ball always goes through the middle and the scorers have to always walk through 3-4 opponents, they get the ball way too early. However, in text mode, the game always says i play with high flanks, but those wing players rarely prepare goals and have the worst rating of the team. Always.
Is there a way to upload my team somewhere or something like that, to get help from entusiasts, cause i feel i know how to make the money work, how to keep my players decently happy (except for them being too cheap and therefore everyone trying to buy them, making them hate me), just the training and most importantly the tactics are compeltely off
