Fortunately, these two merits are not mutually exclusive.

I never played BG2. Could you tell me what the strongholds do? If they are anything like Crossroads Keep I will immediately start the game.

They're optional areas that you own - you complete a sidequest and, if you're the appropriate class, gain control of it. From then on it has a series of quests that it gives you and often other ways to make some money. There's one for almost every class (some overlap).
It's not as in-depth as Crossroads Keep was, but it's a neat bit of game customization for each class.

All choices were pointless except to feel good about yourself. No matter what you did you could not lose or destroy it. The last fight you could do by yourself without any CK upgrades and troops. It was only good for getting lots of money from it and to have a common place to keep and talk to all your companions.
BG2 class strongholds were much more varied and interesting and quests you did in them were 5x better then anything in CK.

You could also finish BG2 without ever claiming a stronghold or even doing their quests. That's not a fair point to make.
CK was larger, involved more NPCs, and actually had an impact on the game besides 'you receive rewards' (though the stronghold quests did have some story components that made it feel like you were achieving something in the world). The quests were more varied in BG2, but they had the leeway to be so because they weren't a part of the main quest - CK itself has more content and focus than any individual stronghold.
Fortunately, like I said, these aren't mutually exclusive - you can have BG2-style class strongholds with varied sidequests/NPCs that also have a place in the story (and impact on it) as per CK.

Another stretch goal met. The second one almost cleared, as well, if you count the paypal donations (which I believe to be around 60k by now).

Yes, both didn't really influence the game. But the problem is CK was introduced as if it should. 2nd part of the game revolved around CK. Last fight of 2nd part was at CK. No, CK was just implemented as failed design.
BG strongholds were never introduced as nothing else but as fun sidequests, none of the main story and quests happened there. But still most of them were done really well and were really fun to do.

But still most of them were done really well and were really fun to do. I'm not arguing fun. I'm arguing depth and content, and CK had more of that in a purely quantifiable sense. If we're talking varied, interesting settings, then every part of NWN2 loses to BG2 hands down, no contest.
Again, taking the view that 'CK doesn't influence the game because you can ignore it' is silly - you can solo BG2, but you can't say the party system doesn't influence the game. Whether or not you thought the effect was worthwhile, it still had one.

"Steve: You have previously mentioned the desire to add on to this new world you are creating. Expansions or DLC?
Feargus: This is a PC game, so we don’t speak of DLC. While that is somewhat of a joke, we are serious about not doing funny things with DLC. We do have a few Kickstarter Exclusive items that we feel should be kept exclusive as a thank you to our backers, but we won’t hold back things we make and then offer them as DLC. Our approach with an Expansion Pack is that it should feel like the expansion packs from the Infinity Engine games – a lot of content and something that took a team for a fair number of months to create."

Dang 3.5 mil looking more and more impossible... On the first day that the 3.5mil goal was announced it looked hopeful for a while with a good 10hour period where every hour got 8k+ in pledges but now it has slowed down immensely yet again..

Their initial goal was 1.1M so i don't think anyone should be disappointed.
