Hi,

I was watching EVO and I enjoyed it a lot even though I'm not familiar with the games and never played them before. So now I dedicded to try out fighting games, but I have a problem - I don't know how to do it.

1. So these are not PC games, right? Do I need a console? If so, which ones are considered good?

2. How do I improve? I don't have any friends that play games (2old) and I don't know of any clubs in my town. Is there an option to play over the internet vs other players?

3. Are fighting games popular at all? I mean, do they have a big community and tournaments going on like Starcraft and other big games?

4. Is the skill cap in these games actually as high as it looks like?

5. Which fighting game is considered the main one? I mean like SC2 is currently for RTS games.

1) Many Capcom fighting games are being released for PC now, but in general you should still focus on a console. More ports, more options, more (good) players.

2) Practice like you're learning an instrument. Your execution has to be damn good before you can really get into higher level play. Also, play against human opponents whenever you have the chance.

3) Very. The fighting game community has been going strong for a LONG time. Decades.

4) Yes. You have no idea...

5) There really isn't a "main" game, but there are a few top games. Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Street Fighter 4 AE 2012, Tekken 6 (soon to be tekken tag 2), Soul Calibur 5 (less so).

Thanks for the fast answer, Rybka! :-)

So which consoles are considered the best ones? That and, can I play over the internet from a console?

Don't know which consoles are considered best, but yes, you can play over the internet from Xbox and Playstation. Somehow, I get the idea that the Wii would be less popular for non-SSB fighters than the other two.
<@Wikt> so you are one of those nega-fans <@Wikt> that hates the company that makes a game and everything they stand for <@Wikt> but still plays the game <@Wikt> (like roughly 30% of blizzard's player base, maybe much more...)

1. Don't need a console necessarily. I'm assuming you already own a PC. It's hard to justify shelling out money for a console just to play a fighting game considering there's really good fighting games available on PC.

2. Yes, play over the internet and make friends you enjoy sparring with. Depending on where you live there are also likely to be fighting game meetings.

3. You've answered this question yourself. EVO is just in the western hemisphere (though its influence obviously stretches around the whole world).

4. Yes. There's a lot of very advanced techniques.

5. There's several:

SSF4AE2012 for the vanilla fighting game formula that many people seem to prefer
UMvC3 for people who like their games batshit crazy
Tekken for people who grew up playing Tekken

It's worth to note that old games are also quite popular and in most cases are equally good or even better than the contemporary ones. Those 3 games just happen to have the largest playerbase.
