I'll repeat Chrono Trigger and FF Tactics, although I prefer older PC RPGs to console ones. Just can't enjoy the blob-style combat of console RPGs that aren't FF Tactics. Do you really have to specify that you're going to pirate the games? You pretty much have to for old games if you don't want a hassle, besides the people who actually worked on the game are usually no longer with the company and thus no longer get your revenue.

I don't know of any stores that cater to older consoles and even if I did it would be massively inconvenient, and since the games would be used NONE of the money would go to the developers. Not to mention the hassel of finding it all and then setting it up and it not being on my PC. Thanks for all the suggestions. Good to see they made a sequel to shining force, definitely going to check out Golden Sun.

The feeling of relevation is more powerful from 1 to 2. Not to mention if you make it through the original you REALLY appreciate how good Lufia 2 truly is and how much work they put into the game. You should play Tales of Phantasia for SNES, the original Tales game. They remade it for PSP and GBA too if you prefer those systems. FFIX (9) is my favorite RPG and a must play. It's a great farewell to the Playstation's great JRPG line up.

Earthbound Dragon Quest VIII (if your comp can handle it) Chrono Trigger Super Mario RPG Final Fantasy VII (because why not) I'm sure there are loads more but those would be my personal top picks. EDIT: On June 28 2012 12:36 TyrantPotato wrote: as the first poster said. Golden sun + Golden sun TLA for the gba. DO NOT PLAY DARK DAWN. its like the D3 of the golden sun series. Edit: Fire emblem is good as well but it's turn based strategy in an RPG. If you're into that kind of thing.

And probably everyone should play those, but they aren't my favorites. Probably my favorite all around choice would be FF Tactics. Which there is nearly no reason to pirate these days. Its on the PSN store for like $10, hell its even on iOS. So play that and pay some people for it because it is a damn fine game. Older stuff that isn't getting enough love in this thread: -Suikoden II (don't really need to know anything about Suikoden I, just jump in here for the better story/gameplay) -Chrono Cross (a great PS1 RPG, and still has some of the best music in any video game ever, IMO) -Xenogears -Vagrant Story (kinda Action RPG-y, but good nonetheless) -Ogre Battle (any of them, but I particularly liked the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together) -Shining Force

Dont put it down! (Gremio, parasites, nooo ;( ) FF7 Suikoden Xenogears FF tactics Arc the lad twlight of the spirits (PS2, very odd circular movement system, loved it) Golden sun . Any FF games really, if you want to go there. Pokemon gen 1-2 (fucking awesome first playthroughs tbh. but very slow and i cant resist spamming the super-fast button on the emu and ruining my experience.)

Additional random list of personal must-plays: Lufia 2, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Mother 3 and FF Tactics. If you also like Action-RPGs: Secret Of Mana (2 and 3), Terranigma, Illusion of Time, Zelda: A Link to the Past. If I would have to pick 3 for spending half a year on a lonely island I would pick: Chrono Trigger, Mother 3 and Terranigma.

Final Fantasy 1/4/5/6/7 Suikoden 1/2 Persona 2 Chrono Trigger Disgaea 2 (it's not really an RPG, but far superior to FF Tactics in every way, so I figured I'd mention it here) Other games are good of course, but I think everyone owes it to themselves to play the games on this list.

And you can actually buy many of the old JRPG's for PS3 or PSP digitally these days, emulating isn't the only option. Not saying it's a terrible thing to do since I've done it as well for the likes of Chrono Trigger even.

Have fun ! :D don't forget the soul blazer trilogy(Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and of course the best one Terranigma) and for what its worth Lufia 1 is also pretty good, but Lufia 2 makes me cry every damn time so damn good from gameplay to story. as far as modern games go DS: Final Fantasy 4 World ends with you Radian Historia(best JRPG in a loooooong time) PSP is also has an emulator so recommend good PSP games people the only game I played on PSP so far is Hexyz Force, would recommend it to anyone.

Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones: two of the best SRPGs ever! Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars very underrated and generally unknown, but this SRPG has a wonderful story, innovative action (!) based combat system and and fresh setting! mechas on mars! Golden Sun: is generally seen as one of the best 16bit-style RPGs. Mother 3 The latest installement of the legendary earthbound series and a very good one. Has been fan-translated. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga This game has singlehandly revived the mario RPG series for nintendo. I still think it's the best RPG from Nintendo ever. Mega Man Battle Network Series Those games are so good that , back in the day, I actually convinced my PC-only friends to play them all day long. Riviera: The Promised Land Experimental RPG from sting, which cut's out a lot of traditional RPG elements and replaces them with other systems. It's a love-or-hate game but very special and definitly worth a try Shining Soul II This is a Diablo style action RPG which is kinda incredible, because we're talking about a GBA game, but it's very addicting and has good gameplay (don't play this for story 'though) Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 1 + 2 The Super Robot Taisen series is all the rage in Japan and those two games are the only main ones ever officially released in the west. You probably need to be a bit of a mecha fan to get the most of those games, but the are incredible popular for a reasen and very good SRPGs in general.

I also liked Tales of Vesperia (dunno if there are good emulators for 360/ps3?), though it doesn't seem as critically acclaimed
