I can build a Laboratory when I get my first Scientist through an Abduction mission(?)
Same for Workshops when I get Engineers(?)
But what do I need for the Foundry(whas it even called that? I mean the thing where I can build Shiv robots n stuff)

Not sure why we're spoilering but I think you need to research Experimental Warfare which you should have available already.

I've been using http://segmentnext.com/2012/10/09/xcom-enemy-unknown-research-guide-xenobiology-engineering-and-weapon-manufacturing/ to decide what to research on my Classic/Iron Man playthrough, just went blind to Normal/IM.

And yes you lose everything if you demolish officer school.

Highly disagree on craparace armor vs skeleton. +1 life is nice, cheap is good, but if you played the sat game right, money is not a problem, and +10 defense equates to a flat increase in your ability to dodge that plasma bolt. Since getting hit can (1) panic you, and (2) kill you, I don't really see much of a decision to make here. Never mind +3 movement and grappling hook, which is situational but also fantastic on certain maps.

A semicolon comments out a line in a *.ini file.

So I tried my first classic ironman run yesterday, ended quite fast. I lost about 2 soldiers per mission, maybe half due to my errors.

The expense of recruiting new soldiers, getting the 5th member and also trying to build satellites ended in me being poor and I couldn't afford laser weapons. First and second month went smoothly, I got satellites up and kept panic down.

In the third month however, chrysallids showed up and ****. MUCH harder than normal diff. They spawned, ran towards me, I managed to kill one then wiped.

Next mission wild mutons showed up, and I had no sniper and no laser rifles... game over

Advice for early game on classic?
Should I buy officers hall early, or wait and only prioritize sats? The 5th guy sure makes a difference.

PS. I really wish advanced enemies showed up a bit later, love fighting those sectoids
Oh, and in one mission a guy panicked, shot another dude who panicked and killed a third. Who does that!

Rookies are actually extremely cheap trading two for winning a mission is worth it in my book.

do you guys think it's possible to RUSH satellite nexus? you can begin the 20 day research as soon as you beat you first UFO crash. then its 4 satellites to build and launch into orbit,.

how cool would it be if you could get 6 satellites in orbit by like your second month while still plowing thru the fights!

It's not possible, simply because Satellite Nexus requires 25 engineers.

I managed to have 5 satellites by end of first month on classic ironman.

Waiting for skeleton armor can be a difference between losing good soldier and not. It means you will probably need to do 1-3 mission with basic armor while enemies get tougher and tougher.

Also when I said it is more expensive I was talking about alloys. You need these really limited resources for both research and building armors later.

Panic is pretty annoying early game on classic, just getting hit once usually seems to cause chain reaction of doom.

God I hate when Cyberdisks show up for the first time, always catches me offguard and some high rank gets one shot and dies. I had the bastard on 1 hp after my turn, would have killed it if my Shotgun Assault didn't decide to get like 40% chance to hit when standing right next to the Cyberdisk, she deserved to die.

Also it feels like I need to play in relatively small dozes on classic or I get impatient, rush forward too fast and get people killed.

Buildings connect horizontally and vertically, meaning if you build the school in the far corner you should never have to rebuild it. Then build all unique facilities under the school

Classic case for me is forgetting to switch from pistol to shotgun, that hurts

I agree panic is annoying, I whined about it a few posts ago but....

I wish it worked like: either they just hunker down, or stand still like an idiot, or run out of sight from visible aliens (away from), or shot wildly at random direction.

i.e. not shoot their best pal they have done 20 missions with.

Yeah the panicking is pretty annoying. I kill all the Thin Men in sight and next turn my guy takes 1 damage from poison and freaks the fuck out. Shoots a team member and a different member freaks the fuck out and shoots someone else.

The way it's done in this game just seems so artificial. It's isn't a big deal because luckily when people freak the fuck out they usually shoot the nearest alien which is 100% improvement as you'll get 2 shots in one turn which a lot of the time is a life saver.

There's just not a general morale like in old XCOM where you fucking know when shit is going bad, your boys and girls are feeling it too and you can either chill a bit for a few turns or go scalp some aliens.

I always feel like my soldiers are cheating. Every time they (pretend to) panic, they just shoot another alien and win me the game that way

There's still the drawback of not being able to use a panicked soldier the next turn.

I don't really understand why so many people complain about the panic system though. In the old games it was quite similar, more often than not one of your own squad mates would kill one of their own, an alien, civilian or just miss and destroy surrounding environment. Or they would just start to run away blindly, often towards the enemy or just simply drop their weapon... it was always such a hassle to have to spend all your time units to get back to where your soldier dropped his weapon and pick it up again... just that he can panic again and drop it AGAIN.
