From what I have played of it, it is really a step up from 1.7.1.1. My FPS issues are gone, but finding a server is difficult right now. A lot of US servers are night time, which is pretty much unplayable if you don't have NVGs since you can't see shit, and I don't like running around with a "target here" flashlight. The day servers that I got into were all crashing constantly, I am assuming from everyone spamming the server trying to get in.

I just had an awesome bandit moment robbed from me.
I had some semi decent good gear but zero bandages and no food and no matches, close to starving and it's pitch black... so I decided to loot a nearby village. While I'm stalking around the small village I see a huge light come right on me. It's obviously someone's flashlight so I run the hell away and behind some overturned truck. This guy was coming down from the hill and definitely saw me with his flashlight, it was pointed RIGHT on me. So as I'm hiding behind the truck he foolishly kept his flashlight on, trying to search for me so I knew exactly where he was. I left my cover from the truck and went around the closest house and saw him about 20 meters away crouched aiming at where he first saw me. Heart pounding, I went a little bit closer and fired two shots of my winchester at him. I heard bone break, he's down. I hide behind the house again, afraid he might shoot me but he doesn't really know where he got him from still. I pop out again and finish him off.
As I loot his body I see he has some big machine gun, two clips (100 shots each) and more importantly FIVE BEANS and a couple of bandages! (Also 25 hatchets and 8 crowbars - wtf ?) I was super stoked.. I quickly ate some beans and went to take his machine gun.... it's in my inventory and I'm feeling like a boss then.. No response from server... !
I log back in, no machine gun on me and his body has disappeared. All I got to keep was two beans and a bandage. But at least I'm not starving anymore.
On that same note I'm pretty much dcing from every server I join. Bleh.

iam also dcing people seem to think it has to do with melee weapon clutter

if anyone is trying to get the files to roll back, the files still exist on the arma servers, just Rocket or someone else in charge removed the link. I already posted on the DayZmod official forums on how to get these files back:
http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=15512
Basically the devs published the 1.7.1.2 hotfix to the 1.7.1.1 hotfix before they went to bed and removed the download link to the previous files thinking everything was k. but there is a bug that causes the servers to crash when you drop your weapon. For some reason, doing this spawns a bunch (like 10-30) bugged "hatchets" and "crowbars". Doing this, and picking up these bugged items really messes with the servers and crashes them.
That's why there are so few servers, most of them that have identified the problem have already rolled back to a more stable version like 1.7.1 since 1.7.1.1 is bugged and doesn't spawn food/water/flares/bandaids and other generic classed loot.

Even the servers that are listed as time offset are all pitch black unplayable night time. On the plus side, loading is much faster than it was before, most of the time.

Damn! I am at Deer Stand with broken leg and no morphine. Nearest hospital is in Zelenogorsk. Anyone near Drozhino/Kozlovka/Bor willing to give me one Morphine auto-injector? I already crawled around 1 hour to come to where I am now. I have 1 blood transfuse, we can exchange morphine for blood. :D
I almost killed my character out of desperation, but I realized that I am so unwilling to say good-bye to my AK-74 and ALICE backpack. :D

Hate Day-Z nighttime? play on Australian servers :D:D:D:D::D

After spending the last two days trying to install this game (and another day before that to hunt down information on how to), I really want to like this game but it's making it really hard to do so. The idea is fantastic, but the actual game is... not.
My experience so far: You start with nothing but a bandage and a flashlight, sneaks around trying to get... somewhere? Then zombies start running past you or directly at you for some unknown reason. Then you die. Never found a weapon or any food or drinks. Never actually did anything. Where's the fun? All I can think about "playing" is the potential of this game. What if you could build shelters, gather food, be forced to venture into dangerous grounds to get supplies, etc. That would be really cool.
Also, you guys are speaking about switching servers and looting on an empty server etc. That I don't understand at all. My character is not saved whatever I do. It just seems to matter which slot I take on the server. I mean, where would the character be saved anyway? Doesn't make sense.

The only one of those things you can't do is build a shelter, though there are tents. It's worth noting that food/drink spawns have been bugged for a few days (fixed now, I think), and the chance to find the old starter pistol has been raised today. It's an alpha, things are constantly being changed and fixed.

Characters are saved centrally when you disconnect, you will have the same location/items when playing on any server. I'm not sure what your problem is. You didn't die before swapping servers?

Ok. Every server is linked to what the dev calls the Hive, where all character data (and much more) are stored. If it doesn't work for you, either you're on a banned server (usually those without BattleEye, the anti-cheat system), either you're on some special server that doesn't save (usually those using modified DayZ, like Black edition), or you died and there was nothing to be saved. Can't think of any other thing, but it may also be a bug that needs to be reported.
I haven't tried the last release yet, but, about difficulty, remember it's an ALPHA stage. The game is not meant to be playable/fun, right now. The dev is testing stuff out, pushing the boundaries to see how far he can go. This release is the hardest to date afaik, maybe forget about the game a bit and try again later, it will eventually stabilize into something playable and maybe even fun, although I doubt it'll ever be for everyone. It's meant to be hard, to be rude, to make you rage, to make you want to quit.

Thought I would share the experience of my first day/life in DayZ:
Before the action: After downloading the games from Steam I tried manually installing the Mod files, but somewhere I screwed up and ended up using the Updater. This allowed me to join servers and load the game, but caused a new problem later on. More on that later.
I had no experience with Arma2 so I played through the weapons training mission to learn the basics of taking items, etc. (pick up gun, shoot at targets, pick up new gun, repeat). I had played Operation Flashpoint back when it first came out, so I was somewhat familiar with the more "military simulation" style of FPS.
Then I loaded up my first DayZ game on a local time server. I had about 2-3 hours of daytime left where I lived, and figured the server would have about the same so I wouldn't have to start at night, even if it was fast approaching.
Here we go: + Show Spoiler + I was using 1.7.1.1 which meant I started without a gun. For some reason, I only had painkillers and a bandage; no flashlight so I needed to find a light source or friendlies very quickly.
I had no idea where I was and I didn't want to use any out-of-game maps if I could help it (at least at first). I headed away from the ocean, slowly sneaking towards any house I could spot, trying to find anything useful. Couple of a empty cans, a hatchet, and a shotgun slug was my loot from about 3-4 surrounding buildings. I made several attempts at a gas station down the street and a larger structure, but there were too many Zs around and I was still getting use to the aggro range. So far I had managed to get around without having to run and I wanted to keep it that way.
At this point, I was getting about 10FPS so decided to logout and relog to a different server. The servers that weren't up-to-date were rumored to have much better FPS and I found another local time server that gave me a solid 30-40 FPS with occasional spikes of lag, but much more playable.
I figured I'd check the houses I had looted on the previous server, but found only a hunting knife and some cans. As I was heading back towards the larger buildings I spotted my first fellow Human. He was wearing fatigues and carrying an AK. I dropped to the ground and crawled between a fence and bush. He hadn't spotted me yet, he was aiming towards the coast as he moved along. I had read so many horror stories about getting shot on sight, and I had seen the "so and so has died" messages a lot recently so I figured I'd find someone a little less threatening to team up with. I crouch-ran across the road, turned a corner and was face to face with 3 guys with Alice packs and assault rifles of various makes. Well shit. They all pointed their guns at me and I just crouched there in the middle of the road, staring straight ahead, hoping that they would see I was unarmed and leave me be (or better yet, help a brotha out). Silence. One of them slowly advanced and checked through my bag. 30 seconds later, the guy in fatigues came around the corner and joined up with his friends. Finally I see "hello" across the bottom of the screen. Had to do a quick check for the key-bindings, then I typed back "Hello" followed by "Im unarmed". "We know" was the response. "So give us your painkillers!" So I did. My whole objective for my first life was to see how long I could live. Pissing off these guys seemed counter-intuitive. I dropped the painkillers and they told me to walk away so I started leaving. Luckily they were just screwing with me as a couple of them laughed and told me to "Come back, take your damn pills". Yay friends! Maybe they had a spare weapon or flashlight? No? Crap... "You should go to Cherno to get stuff" "That way" as he pointed his gun towards the East.
Balota and new friends:
+ Show Spoiler +I had to re-log to adjust some video settings, and when I came back it was pitch black on the server. Couldn't see ANYTHING so I decided now would be a good time to check the TL teamspeak and see if anyone was nearby. Luckily some fellas were starting up on a new server and were in Cherno, so I could make my way to them as long as we chose a sever that was still light out.
Once I got logged in, I saw 'Balota' flash across the bottom and told my new friends on chat where I was. They mentioned a camp of medical tents and an airfield just North and said it was a good place to grab some items, so off I went. It took me a while to get into the camp without attracting the Zs, but once in, I check a couple tents and didn't find anything but a flashlight (where was this thing an hour ago...). Just then, I noticed I wasn't alone. A fairly well equipped survivor with a rifle was going around looting before I could get there. I used the voice chat and no one replied so I thought I'd lay low till he left. A few minutes later, Im stuck up a watchtower with 4 Zs nearby, and still no gun. I tried to throw a can out the window, thinking maybe I could distract them long enough to escape to the airfield but I ended up bouncing the can off the ceiling and made a horrible sound. The Z's were coming up the ladder now. Time to GO! Two of the TLers were at the airfield just North of me so I jumped out the tower, landed on some sandbags so I didn't break a leg, then took off running through the woods. Once I got the to airstrip, I had lost the Zs on my tail and could now crouch-run towards the Control Tower where my new friends were. Aggroed a new Z and had to sprint to the tower and up the back ladder. Once inside, they took out the Z and I was able to get my FIRST GUN! An AK74 that was on a dead bandit they had killed, along with a clip of ammo. There were 4 more TLers in Cherno. They found a bus and were planning on fixing it up so my two friends and I searched the hangers for some items, then took to the woods and headed towards our new ride.
Edit: Im adding to this as I get time. Up next Party Bus and how NOT to transfuse your dying friends!

Anyone else getting the :"This server is running an incorrect version of server side appliction." error?

Your game seem to be much more fun than the one I'm playing.
My game:
1. Find a server to join among the few available ones, all of which are either full or password protected, or both. No queue, just spam and hope you get lucky. [10-30 minutes].
2. Spawn, still with no weapon or food. Run or sneak (doesn't seem to matter much) trying to look for gear until red link and "no message received for x seconds". [1-2 minutes].
3. Find a server to join...

try to join a server with low ping, that should help. Also you need to find weapons

I have about 8-30 ping to the servers I join. Now there are two more hotfixes to try though.
Yes I wish I could find weapons.
