Well you know how I was with Notch, right?

I really want this game to do well because the concept is great. I get very annoyed when the developers seemingly have no clue what they are doing, though. The more choices they make, the more this game simply feels like a quick cash grab by them before they go back to Haven and Hearth.

To be fair I called out Notch quite often for various reasons but I always enjoyed Minecraft and I always fully supported it. The same can pretty much be said here; I will be putting together a TL village at retail and making every effort I can to get a community going here on TL. That being said I really, really think the game is going in the wrong direction lately and the hype over it has massively died down, as well as the playerbase so most other people seem to agree with me.

This game WILL be good at some point in time but it's looking more and more like that time will come later rather than sooner. The game was indeed promising when beta first opened. There were about 40 of us from TL that logged in at one point or another and we had a lot of fun for about a week until our village was destroyed and everyone quit. It's been a few months since then and nothing has really changed in the game yet. Sure, a few things have been added like fishing, boats, carts... but it's mostly way of life improvements and not actual content in the sense that it doesn't really increase the amount of things you have available to spend time on.

I think if you're even slightly interested in this you should try to grab a beta key, BUT DO NOT USE IT YET. Hold onto it for a week or two until the next big content update happens. I feel like anyone stepping into the game right this moment will be disappointed and that's a shame because Haven and Hearth has already shown how much more is going to be added to Salem. Anyone who didn't play HnH just isn't going to be impressed with Salem at this point in time, in my opinion.

Gotcha. I remember everyone being really excited about this at launch where I didn't get a key myself and the game doesn't seem to have... done much since then.

Gonna try getting a key, this really sounds as if you need a proper group to make it fun at all. However, what's in place to stop this from just being "Whoever gets the biggest group of people wins by raping everyone else 24/7"? I never got that part.

Well basic defense mechanisms have shifted from haven (static walls, if your walls break you're fucked) to more of a tower-based setup revolving around braziers (towers with ammunition that shoot at enemies). I have no idea how the combat system works in salem, but general defenses look relatively formidable, enough to prevent large groups from being able to defeat a decently fortified base.

i forwarded one of serejai's posts to TotalyMoo/John, the Salem "community manager" that Paradox hired:

"Serejai,

I appreciate the concerns you have about Salem's profitability but there are a few things I have to correct you on.

Firstly, the current cash shop is majorly catered towards newer players. This is of course not going to be the case as time progresses as we want both new and old to have a reason to visit the shop, mainly via cosmetic and convenience items. Don't take that as me saying we're turning P2W, because that is absolutely not something we are aiming for. The problem is that you're reasoning from the standpoint that Salem is a complete game whereas both Salem and the monetization of the game are in beta stages. If you have the best of the game in mind you would of course understand that assuming things like this, especially in a public forum, is only hurtful for the game as you scare new players away.

Turning a game profitable is not something to be forced or stressed, especially when you have the funds to do it in a better way (look at "sleeper hit" for reference). You can easily see the result of companies stressing their game by looking at all the crash-and-burns we see in today's industry.

As for the matter of creating buzz around the game by handing out more beta keys a few months ago, well, we did not aim towards that kind of buzz back then. There were a couple of bottlenecks that still needed to be done, multiserver support being one of them, before we wanted more people in the game. I assume you considered the Salem beta one of the normal "you're actually playing an almost complete game and we only want to tease by having a beta"-scenario but that is not the case. The Salem beta was (and in some sense is) actually a true beta in the sense of it being a tech-beta where we don't want the majority of the people that are future potential players actually playing the game. Especially not with things like tutorials missing.
Players who get into a game at this stage are very likely to give it a try and never look back. Giving out more keys a few months ago would have only generated more of these instead of actually helping the game and letting these people in later with a better chance of them staying. It's a much more effective strategy to start releasing keys in this stage where we can push out regular content updates and have player-retaining functions in the game.

I haven't looked at your earlier posts as I was only referred to this one, but if you have any further concerns or questions about the game feel free to ask me and I'll do my best to answer them.

Regards,
John"

Sounds reasonable, I played the beta today and honestly if I had not played Haven and Hearth and knew what the game can become with more work I wouldn't look back.

Played the game in early beta because it looked interesting, stuck around because of the handful of regulars in the TL village. Will definitely give this a try at launch, as I will have a good time with you guys anyway, regardless of gameplay!

I will start setting up plans for a TL town shortly. I've already got a lot of ideas on how to organize and manage it in a modular fashion so we can expand (both players and production) without any trouble. If any of you guys wanna brainstorm with me toss me a PM.

I'm also using this nifty program to map out a town so it's not a complete clusterfuck at launch.

I just signed up from the website and got a key. Last time I checked there were like 50 left, so sign up there if you're too lazy to sign up for mmorpg.

Is it just me or that resources are scarce as shit in this game?

I musta spent an hr or so running around trying to find stuff I could pick up to make the first few things and got completely lost.

Eventually made it back to town and got a wilderness deed, then thrown into the middle of nowhere where all the terrain elevation is whack and im basically stuck. Is there a proper map in this game?

Started a new char thinking I just got screwed by the randomness and Jamestown, but I'm starting to venture really far away from a different town and found squat so far..

All areas close to the starting town are really stripped of all resources. Once you get thrown into wilderness, things improve.

Keep an eye out for snakes and bears, though.

The forums has got a pretty extensive (although partially lacking) guide, so you can probably just redirect people to that instead.

http://forum.salemgame.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=181

I haven't actually toroughly read it myself, since I'm surfing on my H&H knowledge, so I cannot guarantee it's all updated and actual, but most of it should still be relevant.

Well, that's a decent single player guide but I'd like to focus more on a guide for those of us who will be making a village together. A lot of things change.

For example, if you're playing solo you probably want to rush to a claim as fast as possible to protect your stuff. In a village that isn't necessary as only one person needs to rush to a claim and everyone can store their items on it. We also won't need everyone gathering the same items, researching the same skills, etc.

I think I will write up something in sections, like... "If you want to be a Leatherworker then do this" so people overlap as little as possible at the start and thus our village is as efficient as possible.

Obviously people can deviate from it but it should give new players who want to help out the village a good idea of exactly what needs to be done without having to ask in-game every ten minutes.

Playing this with 2 familymembers as a small group of hermits.
Me and my brother roaming, hunting and foraging.

But the core of our little town is our 67 year old mother who built most of it, farms, forages and totally loves this game =)

(until we get ganked lol, but we'll see about that then
