For example, if you're playing solo you probably want to rush to a claim as fast as possible to protect your stuff. In a village that isn't necessary as only one person needs to rush to a claim and everyone can store their items on it. We also won't need everyone gathering the same items, researching the same skills, etc.

I think I will write up something in sections, like... "If you want to be a Leatherworker then do this" so people overlap as little as possible at the start and thus our village is as efficient as possible.

Obviously people can deviate from it but it should give new players who want to help out the village a good idea of exactly what needs to be done without having to ask in-game every ten minutes.

Sounds like a really good idea, I hope you guys get into it

The defenses part of the Sevenless guide is pretty important, basically you can never have enough braziers/walls...

Thats so awesome!

BTW, could we have some sort of list of TL players?

eg

Salem username: _Gunnar
Salem server: Plymouth
Information: Mildly adventurous hermit. Would love other independent settlers nearby.

Zandar PMed me earlier and I literally just told him I would make a list of players so... let's go ahead and get it started then. I'm trying to work out a way to share hearths without non-TLers getting them to grief. I'm thinking I can do some kind of authentication system like I did on my Minecraft server that gives a hearth list to people who are approved. Would be opt-in, of course, and not something the TL village would need to use since we'd have village chat and see everyone anyway... but would be useful for hermit players to keep in touch.

Hahah, i think i was the only one who didn't ever make the journey. Since me and andy initially chose the location and he died and had to walk back i believe.

I heard many tales of how terrible it was though.

You can indeed spawn at hearths now (or could a month ago when I last logged in) although it was a tad different from HnH I think. Basically when you make a new character you go to boston and learn one of the skills... I forget which. Then you talk to a guide and he gives you the option of teleporting to a friend. I think it's a one-time deal so if you decline or you have him teleport you to the wilderness you lose your chance.

You can spawn at a hearth after you get some skill (I cant remember either..) but only if that hearth is set AS the pclaim, which is a terrible idea if you're going to leave any sort of summonable scent, since you can be summoned at any point on the pclaim in that case

I was thinking we could just leave our salem usernames here and then pm each other on the salem forums? There is also the #tlsalem irc, right?

If you guys are going to start a village its a little simpler since then anyone who wants to join can just pm the mayor here for the hs to spawn at, but for the hermits/nomads it might be nice to stay in touch with the rest of the community as well.

edit: didnt see the bit about the authentication system, have no idea how that would work but it sounds awesome

Well, the big issue is security. We've had non-TLers infiltrate our village in HnH before and massacre people because they asked for HS on TL and someone gave it to them. We definitely need to have as few people as possible in control of hearth secrets if their claims are inside the village.

Some kind of authentication would be one way to handle it. Another way to reduce the risk would be to have everyone's personal claims OUTSIDE of the village so that if a hearth does leak somehow they still wouldn't be able to access the actual village.

For right now I think it's safe to just toss around PMs if anyone is interested in grouping up since it's only beta and most players right now are hermits anyway.

At retail, though, I think I'll try to get some kind of IRC bot that people can PM and the bot will verify who they are before sending them a hearth (pretty much what I did for Minecraft authentication, only switched to Salem accounts).

Not overly excited about this one. Sheds will be nice in the long run but I'd much rather see the game branch out a bit first; taming, breeding, carts, horses, witchcraft, proper gear (with stats and whatnot), churches, and all that other major stuff. The game is supposed to hit retail by the end of the year and I don't see how they'll be able to push out all of these major features if they spend their time on trivial things instead.

Not trying to be negative here. I just think fundamental features like, say, replanting trees, should take priority over things like adding additional houses considering retail is only about a month away.

Is that just me?

I might consider playing this again soon. Don't have to much to do currently. I just got really bored when I played before because it was just me wandering around and didn't want to walk all the way to the TL village but since you can teleport now could be fun.

Quick question though are they churning out good updates quite a bit or just some every once in awhile?

Little of both. There was a time where they were pumping out decent updates 2-3 times a month; things like fishing, boats, new animals, etc. Then they decided to work on designing a custom website backend + multi-server support so there were no updates for months. Now they're finished with that and if I'm understanding correctly have nothing else to work on but updates.

To give you a timeframe the multi-server stuff was finished about 11 days ago. They pushed out an update today that added a new house, a shed (neither probably took more than 30 minutes to do), a bunch of emotes (I'm guessing most of their time was spent on these animations), some new carpentry items, and some bug fixes. I don't personally consider this a major update like I would Witchcraft or Taming/Breeding, but it's definitely more than just bug fixes.

If they keep up with this pace you can probably get an idea on how long updates will take. Week and a half for minor ones (adding carts, tree replanting, new items) and probably 2-3 weeks for major ones (witchcraft, taming, breeding).

It's a pretty acceptable pace; far faster than what they did in HnH.

Ahh,

I just started playing Salem at Roanoke as well, is there a TL guild/community in this game currently? Would be nice to develop a town together or something.

Playing @ GMT+8, but only at night,

Peace,

Indeed. Best is to make a claim for visitors outside your city walls and let new people hearth to that.
Also, keys for wall gates can be made personal in Salem , so if you die with your key nobody else can use it, a big improvement

Open village vs Close village; invite everyone or just the few the main core group knows. Needless to say that the second one is the most fool proof option >but< you will leave out the possibilities to meet really good new pilgrims. While the game is still in beta (is it?, I haven't played in months ), you are better off with the Open village as a resource to meet and stablish a core group for the retail day.

Raiders (good ones) only care for your location. The more defended the village, the longer the preparation it takes to raid it, nothing more. Having that option for getting to know new people and expanding the village won't be worth it if the core village hasn't a strong defence (with items and with <active> players scouting around).
Location secrecy gets irrelevant once you have a stablish a village with lots of active people, untill then your Location is your MOST important defence :3

I'm not sure if the game is still on beta but if it's, getting to know more people is always a good thing for the cost of losing something that will get lost eventually .
What I'm trying to say is that by doing that now, you are cutting out potential to get to know good people that you could work with on the retail ^^. Obviously this can only be done in a Beta enverioment, otherwise the risk is to high for the potential price.

Some lazy questions I have, if anyone wants to answer them I'd appreciate it

Has the game been put on retail or is still in beta?.
If the game is in beta, have they implemented the creatures from the dark, withcraft and churches?.
Are liquidians around and togheter?
