I'm stuck between Elementalist and Necromancer. I've decided to make a female Sylvari, though. t_t

The hero's band (plus 2 on all stats) that comes with every pre-purchase looks like a pretty nice boost for the early levels, though. There are no consumables included in the Collector's Edition. Those are included in the Deluxe edition, which is affordable, in my opinion. The Collector's Edition includes physical items, like a miniature Charr, music, etc., etc. Ah ok, that was a bit unclear on the website here : https://buy.guildwars2.com/collectors-edition/ but now that you mention it I think I remember reading that elsewhere in an FAQs section, or something like that. Actually, that was a typo on my end. There are digital items (i.e. consumables) included in the Collector's Edition. However, what I meant to say was that you do not need to buy the Collector's Edition exclusively to get the consumables. You can get these through the Digital Deluxe edition. :-)
Yea, I knew what you meant.
I wonder what the EU/GBP prices will end up at for GW2. USD prices (or current exchange rates) often bear little relation to the quoted price, unfortunately.

Oh yeah... necromancer looks sick. and the 4 attunements of the ele i think makes it the most dynamic class...
Not too fond of the slyvari myself. Will eventually check them out, but will definitely be completing the game several times before checking them out ^^

I know that the price for a Digital Deluxe edition in Denmark will be €79.

It really does, man. I played one in the original Guild Wars.
Perhaps this is what I'll do:
Female Sylvari Necromancer Male Asura Elementalist Male Charr Warrior
But, eh, I make up my mind every hour

A lot of people have said that they're going to go for a warrior, which is surprising to me seeing that the "warrior" profession idea has been around since the dawn of MMORPGS and im suprised people havent got bored of it....
That being said, the warrior in gw2 looks sufficiently unique to compensate.

Classes in Guild Wars 2 are like no other we've seen thus far.

Wellllllllll the combat is completely unique, but some of the classes not so much :
Warrior Elementalist Ranger

I'd say that they all have unique mechanics compared to other games.
For example, a Warrior can be just as efficient with a Greatsword than with a Longbow or a Rifle. The Longbow is very Area of Effect orientated, and the Rifle is very condition-orientated. They move around Banners to support allies or inflict damage/conditions to enemies nearby.
The Elementalist can Conjure/Manifest environmental weapons that gives them a new set of skills/spells. An Elementalist can Conjure a Fiery Greatsword, for example, to be a melee Area of Effect damage dealer, or a Frost Longbow to inflict damage from afar with a bow.
As for the Ranger, I believe the only unique addition to this class in Guild Wars 2 is that it's not just efficient while equipped with a Longbow or a Shortbow. It's also a powerful rogue-like melee damage dealer with various melee weapons. You can easily switch between a Shortbow in your main-hand and a Greatsword or an Axe and a Warhorn on-the-fly to adapt to different situations.
In general, all the classes are designed to be very versitile and extremely fast-paced. Whether you're an Elementalist switching between different Attunements during the heat of battle or a Guardian switching between being a melee Hammer-wielding damage dealer or a Staff-wielding caster, it's all very, very fast paced and situational.
Personally I can see what you're trying to say, but then again, it must be hard to make these very "traditional" classes unique from other games, but I believe that ArenaNet will deliver, and as far as I can see (also thinking of the original Guild Wars game) there's nothing as unique as Guild Wars.
Edit: the Elementalist can also Conjure a Lightning Hammer (2H), a Fiery Axe (1H) and an Earth Shield.

After seeing the necromancer skills and the minion skills, i'm really getting swayed onto necromancer being my main :O

Same, I like the Blood Magic builds, though. Stealing life-force, health, etc., etc.

Does anybody know anything about - or have any theories about - class counters in PvP? It seems that the thief would counter caster classes like the elementalist, for example, but does it really work like that now, given that everybody seems to have tons of hp and can self heal?
From what I've seen of PvP, it's actually quite hard to tell, so I'm not sure if aNet have actually managed to shift that age-old tradition or not.
|
No class has 1 purpose, and thus, cannot be really countered, i imagine some classes will be slightly better vs other classes though.
|
Yea that's the feeling I've got from what I've seen. I wonder if, though, when people start getting a bit better and learning more 'optimal' ways of playing their class, that certain counters will begin to appear.
Having said that, given that classes can have several purposes, they would most likely be 'meta' counters; countering trends in play, rather than the class itself.

I feel like the whole weapon-swapping thing adds a lot more options to the action on-the-fly.
|
In all honesty I haven't seen one beta video yet where it felt like someone was using their profession anywhere close to its max potential.
I feel like we won't even begin to understand the combat till months after the release so for right now any balance or counters discussion can be nothing but pure speculation.
|
Everything will be figured out in a few months - 1 year.. Then we will find optimal builds and weapons for certain situations. But gw2 will 100% have a higher skill cap than any other MMO, which is definitely a very good thing.

I'll show you a clip of a very impressive Elementalist being used to it's fullest.
Starting around 6:50

This clip just looked better then the average terrible player you have seen so far.
The ele rarely utilizes his dodge to avoid incoming attacks and backpedals for no reason pretty much constantly, most of the time he spends just trying to kite players using his abilities. If you think this looks impressive in the slightest wait until you see some of the clips that will pop up 3 months or so after release.

I doubt its to its fullest, but it looks close to me.
