Region play is already implemented in Simcity 4, it is just not as in depth as the new glass box engine. The problem with the current size is, it is forcing you to create boring, grid like cities because you're forced to use every bit of land, specialized city or not. The new region play has some interesting idea, but the you get all these weird spacing between each city, so it looks ugly.

Also, can you build entire residential focused towns and then send workers to other cities that are industrial focused?

I mean, unless you already went Skyscraper mode, in which case...I guess you technically beat the game?

You can give money to your other cities I believe, but yeah, the city size seems like a continuing problem and making new cities doesn't exactly solve it. Knowing EA, city tile expansion will probably be DLC.

It's not like it takes that long to get Skyscrapers... and they're like forcing me to build everything right next to each other which doesn't make it very aesthetically pleasing.. Also if you already filled in your city, it is time to provide better services to your citizens. This will allow more wealthy people to live there. This gives you more money for better services. Repeat and refine your city.

As others pointed out, it's only using a single core for the simulation engine. There's other compromises you could make, like cutting down on Sims or just giving people a warning that old computers will suffer on larger maps. No size is going to satisfy everyone but I think they guessed wrong with the current size, in terms of balance between feeling constrained and too much freedom. When you see a small strip of land between your city borders and a body of water, it's just irksome knowing you can't do anything to reach it. You're stuck in a playpen.

It's not really single core, it's programed like most games hell sc2 is programed like this they just assigned a core 1 task they don't split that task up for each available core they just have set processes and each process gets assigned a core to work on. Most game developers wont bother with anything more complex then that because it's just difficult to implement. And parts of the simluation a very parts mostly dealing with cross regional and global markets is done server side. But much of the simulation is done on a single thread.

If anyone else gets "authenticating with simcity server" and gets stuck, restart and run the launcher as admin. Helped me. I went to EA East 2 and the tutorial started...for now. Guess the west server are allready screaming in agony and its thursday morning.

Why didn't they just allow people to make 1.5x or 2x larger city grids? I've seen some streams and they look really limiting, and I don't want to be pausing one city while I go and work on another -- that's just disruptive and annoying. After an hour of play I'll probably either have to make skyscrapers everywhere, destroy everything with disasters, or start anew. And even then, I might have to wait a while to actually play if I have to downloaded and authenticate from overloaded servers. Eh, I'll probably buy it anyway.
