Chris Avellone was praising SoD a lot in his interviews. Beamdog gave him early access to the game and its design documents and he played it whole and gave them his feedback. Then we praised it to whoever asked him about it. So I think it will be a good expansion. And SCL .. LOL. I don't expect anything good from that game. It rapes D&D 5e rules with some action RPG modifications and seems to have all the bad new Bioware stuff in it. Also they decided to focus on MP part of the game, I think if it as good as NWN1 campaign we will be lucky (which means it will probably suck). Most of the marketing is barely mentioning a singleplayer campaign now, they mostly talk about DM mode and campaign creation tools.

david gaider interview With David Gaider, who's the original lead writer/designer(?) for Baldur's Gate, now joining Beamdog there's a lot of talk of Baldur's Gate 3. It's been Beamdog's long-term goal since their debut. Work on the Siege of Dragonspear which seeks to bridge the gap between BG1 and BG2 is all but finished and it's coming out SoonTM. If and when(I'm pretty sure BG3 is all but given with Gaider back on the saddle) BG3 is released what do you think it will look like? Will they try to make it a 5th edition experience or stay with 2nd edition? I guess if Siege of Dragonspear is a success BG3 might be as well. The content Beamdog has made so far has been a bit lackluster in my opinion. From what I've gathered most of the people at Beamdog were ex BG1/2 modders, I'm not sure what kind of things we can expect from such a background.

They are working with an engine that has been improved upon for many many years. As for BG3 (which I don't think will be called that since that story is finished), what it will be like mostly depends on if they continue using Infinity Engine or start over with something new. If something new than it will 100% be D&D 5 edition. If they use Infinity Engine, then it will be D&D 5e depending on how hard is to modify it for that (IWD2 used IE that was modified to use 3rd edition D&D and they took less than 1 year to do that and get the whole game done). Personally I would like them to keep using IE, but create a bunch of new models and assets so the engine can be made to graphically look more similar to what Pillars of Eternity looks like.

As for the upcomming expansion, I will wait for reviews. The added content to the EE's wasn't super good but this is another scale for them, so I will give them a chance (and most likely buy it if it goes on sale or I have an urge to replay BG1-2).

While in IE games everyone worked on same timer. Everyone started their attacks/spellcasting at same moment and from there some finished it faster then others but needed to wait for the next common start (every 6s) before starting again. That made IE games feel more turn based but also made it more manageable to control multiple party members and fight in bigger battles.

Timing mattered a lot (I guess you could say you delayed your turn to react something). You could wait for a guy to start casting a spell, then go "MAGIC MISSILE" and cancel his spell with it. Or in longer combats have an exact sequence of dispelling + MM to hit in the correct order to strip his defenses and still get the Magic Missile in to cancel the enemy spell. The basic engine is kind of turn based, but it really didn't feel like it when playing, timing was a major component of combats.

It allowed you to sometimes also cast one spell and attack right afterwards because new turn started in the meantime. But if you cast a spell and wanted to cast another as soon as possible you need to wait for new turn to start.

If BG3 is in the works, I pray to god they will up their game by A TON. Completely agree. Don't want to see my favorite name butchered by Beamdog. But let's see how good is Dragonspear. If it is good then maybe there is some hope that BG3 will be good too.

Oh and they completely changed the UI for the inventory and character screen. I don't really know why that was necessary. See for yourself: steamcommunity.com (character screen) steamcommunity.com (inventory)
