Guinness World Records has declared that Call of Duty: Black Ops has the greatest videogame ending of all time.
At least, that's according to 13,000 members of the public who were polled on the best videogame ending ever for The Guinness Book of World Records 2012 Gamer's Edition.
Other games in the top ten include Halo: Reach, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Heavy Rain.
"Everyone has an opinion on how to end a game whether it's an epic boss fight, a clever plot twist or a 90-minute movie," said Gaz Deaves, editor of The Guinness Book of World Records 2012 Gamer's Edition. "This list recognises some of the greatest endings and hopefully will get gamers talking about what are their favourites and why."
Guinness World Records top 10 game endings:
10. Heavy Rain 9. Final Fantasy VII 8. Metal Gear Solid 4 7. Portal 6. Red Dead Redemption 5. God of War 4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Halo: Reach 1. Call of Duty: Black Ops
Please leave Blizzard ones out as we've all seen them, and please only post one (your favourite) to prevent the thread from being cluttered up by too many and resulting in people not even bothering watching them to see why they're so good 'cos there's too many to click through... Here is my favourite:
I don't know if this qualifies as a cut scene, but the first time I ever fought a Berserker in Gears of War will forever be one of my most memorable video game moments.
What? Where the hell is the death of Grom Helscream in WarCraft 3? I remember playing that in second grade and crying it was so awesome. Nerd tears... but still.
What about Max Payne cutscenes? Most depressing storyline in a video game ever.
And the end of Half Life 2 ("this is my stop...")? WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE GAMER COMMUNITY?
Besides OoT of FFVII, these are all games from 2005+, most in the last two or three years. This just seems like a popularity contest, as is the inherent problem when polling the "public" where people have select memories of recent games or simply are too young to have played older games.
A Gamer's Edition seems like it could be interesting, but I'd rather they poll the staff members of major gaming magazines and websites. These are among the highest selling games of recent years, nothing more.
This top 10 list is meaningless. Black Ops should not be #1. They should've made it so a hell of a lot more people could vote. 13,000 mean nothing and is nothing.
(1:15+: they actually learned to dance, of course xD)
Just from the technical aspect, Final Fantasy probably fills a lot of space in the "best cutscenes" category, every year. This is one of my favourites. No action, just squall and rinoa getting to know each other.
Funny how that list reflects modern times with such a bias. It does say "of all time" and in which case we know most of those on that list dont even come close...
Come on. That was just a popularity contest and not even for the cutscenes. People most likely just voted for their favourite game. I can do an online poll of the greatest musicians of all time and Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga will probably top it. Doesn't mean they're even close to it. I can see this thread's going to be cluttered with videos, so I won't post any of my favourites (too many anyhow). However, I'll mention an interactive cutscene which stands out in my mind. The opera scene from FF6 is one of my all-time favourite sequences in a video game.
It clearly says 'endings' and not 'cutscenes.' Their lead in even states that they mean ending in general, not just cutscenes. So it would probably be more like, your favorite final level/boss fight/story wrap up/cutscene combination. It just so happens that one of those things probably dominates the others and is what people remember as the 'ending' of a game.
Note that this doesn't make me agree with their list anymore, but it does mean that a thread of 'favorite cutscenes' is kind of random(not that there's anything wrong with that though).

I don't know who voted for Black Ops but I'd be willing to bet a large sum of money that it was all barely-teen dumbass kids. That sounds unnecessarily harsh but come on, anyone who thinks best video game ending of all time and comes up with FUCKING BLACK OPS is a dumbass.
The fuck at CoD x2? LOL I love CoD, and have nearly 2k hours playtime in it, and I also love Single Player, but this is just stupid. Black Ops Single Player was easily the best one of any CoD game, but this is wayy too much.
Not sure which game has my #1 ending, but some worth mentioning off the top of my head are: Final Fantasy VII - Aeri's Death, Portal - Ending Credits, Half-Life 2 - Finale, Half-Life 2: Episode Two - Gman's Interlude, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic - Temple of the Spider Ending, StarCraft - Tassadar's Sacrifice, Diablo 3 - The Black Soulstone, Mass Effect - Liara and FemShep (Sorry, just had to xD).
(If we would count trailers as well, then Mirror's Edge, Bioshock and a bunch of others would be in here as well.)
System Shock 2 had a really awesome ending imo! It doesn't need fancy graphics.
Well, it's one of the best games ever released anyway.
The best cutscene is from Bioshock imo, it's one if the greatest moments in video game history. But that was about the only amazing thing about Bioshock.
Would you kindly watch that sequence? Comes a little later in this vid.
I'm not a big fan of the BG cinematic, I find that the game's strong point is just... everything. :p BG is pretty much perfect in my eyes. If anyone ever had the balls to do a game like this again, with today's possibilities, I would sell my soul to the devil to make it possible.

This list is just nonsense. You have a chance to name top 10 endings of all time in video games and you come up with that. Many games in the list have such generic endings.Sure opinions are subjective but I still can't perceive who the hell they asked to get that kind of answers. As other people I'd like to suggest better candidates: Max Payne 2 ending,GTA Vice City ending,Mafia ending or even Stalker: Call of Pripyat ending if you're into that kind of endings.
I don't know about the BEST ending, but I reeaaally loved the Batman: Arkham City ending. I strongly suggest playing through the game before watching the ending if you haven't, it has some major spoilers.
Honestly, Blizzard cinematics, barring the ones we've seen of D3, have really gone downhill, I mean we had..basically everything in WC3, SC1 protoss ending (that I remember), and now we have "Let's kick this revolution into OVERDRIVE!"
That Bayonetta cutscene genuinely made me not play it until a year after release. I hated it. I couldn't even explain properly why but I was just like 'this game is NOT for me'.
The key to a good cut-scene depends heavily on how the music and video match together in my opinion. Because of that, and so many good memories of Final Fantasy IX, this gotta be my absolute favorite. Really showcasing what a genious Nobuo Uematsu really is :
To me you can't really have a good ending without a good story and this criteria basically throws half the games on the Guinness list right out the window.
Obviously all the blizzard games, with especially the ending of SC1 and the Orc campaign in WC3. However, here's one which I remember being absolutely amazing:

Exactly my opinion. Most games I don't really immerse myself into, but games like WarCraft 3 and Max Payne were so well written and fun that I really was emotionally connected.
I remember, after finishing Max Payne 1, being depressed for like days, thinking about those haunting HAUNTING nightmare sequences. My god, I highly doubt the third one will live up to previous two.
For me this has to be the scene in Knights of the old republic where you find out you are Revan hands down. The thing which makes a cinematic good is the charecters and story, not technical flashy brilliance.

Probably the closest to a true cinematic cutscene the SNES has to offer. Just one of many great moments in FF6, even though its only relation to the plot was getting the airship.

I like this intro. I'm pretty sure there are better intros that I have seen, but I can't think of any at the moment.
As far as ending goes, I finished Darksiders recently and I like the ending. There was something epic about it, although it wasn't some flashy battle scene or something like that.
Seriously Max Paine has amazing cut scenes. Same with MGS 2, MGS4 was "supposed" to be better but it was a bad sequel just like godfather II and III compared to I, MGS 1 and 2 were by FAR, FAR, the best.
Cutscenes and endings are different things. For example, FFVI for the SNES has one of the best endings in any game but it's not graphically pretty like many of today's games are. It's not even pretty compared to BW's cutscenes.
Wow that Black Ops ending... Paid off? I guess if you poll gamers on average you're going to get a bunch of CoD bros. Halo's cinematics are a bit more redeemable; overall that list is stupid, and a popularity contest. Guinness really running out of things to include I guess.
Edit: this statement alone -
Guinness World Records has declared that Call of Duty: Black Ops has the greatest videogame ending of all time.
Halo's single player story (at least the first three) are actually pretty amazing, and a lot of the cutscenes were pretty sweet. As much as I think competitive console fps is a joke, that isn't what this thread is about, and there's some good storytelling there. Black Ops being #1 is a joke, however.

yessssss. May not be CGI but so awesome. Will never forget. I haven't played that game in probably a decade and I could hear every line in my head before they were said.

I really liked the Halo CE cinematic during 343 Guilty Spark. The entire level was pretty creepy, as you were wondering what the hell was going on. But seeing the cinematic ultimately build up and reveal the flood, that was some scary stuff.
This list must be really biased toward newer games. The halo reach ending was a joke. Every other halo had a better ending. Reach developers were too lazy to even include an alternate ending for legendary difficulty.
On February 15 2012 03:13 Naphal wrote: i think only videogames older than 3 years should really count, i mean call of duty lol -.-
At least Zelda OoT has made it quite far.
Call of Duty has always had some pretty impressive action set pieces. I don't get why everyone gets on-board to hate something so fervently.
I haven't purchased a Call of Duty game since the original Modern Warfare, but I can understand the draw for some people.
Problem is the Modern Warfare 2 ending was wayy to cliché to be considered good. I loved the Black Ops single player, the story was great, the ending was great... but it is not the #1 cutscene in gaming history. It's just... not.
All I have to say is, the Metal Gear Solid (1) ending with Otacon was the most awkward ending I've ever seen. You might have to have played it to get it though.
I always thought this one was pretty cool. The multiplayer in this game, despite not having online capabilities and being imbalanced as all hell, was rediculously fun.
10. Heavy Rain 9. Final Fantasy VII 8. Metal Gear Solid 4 7. Portal 6. Red Dead Redemption 5. God of War 4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Halo: Reach 1. Call of Duty: Black Ops
Ugh, can't believe that CoD is here not once, but two times... franchise seems like its just a bunch of flashy patriotic scenarios that come out once a year.
IMO, Halo Reach was definitely the best ending. Of course, I'm a massive lore geek, so maybe it's the most awesome when you take it in context of the entire Halo universe, and what happened afterwards.
Hmm... FFX/FFX-2 had a good ending too. I liked a lot of Kingdom Hearts stuff too.
Feel like Mario needs to be included here somewhere too.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but the endings and cutscenes throughout ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are to me more impressive than what you see in games nowadays in terms of how epic they are.
Very satisfying ending, tbh I don't think you'll get it if you haven't heard of the game, but it's hard. Too hard. But I did it, took me a few months, lots of tears and massive frustration.
I don't see how CoD made it on there. There are definitely more deserving. The presidential scene at the end was funny though.
Any of Crysis 2's cutscenes should have made it on there. Here's one with the spear, but the first scene displaying the nanosuit's capabilities or the final cutscene both blow cod's out of the water.
Majora's Mask's final cutscene with credits should have earned a spot as well. Throughout the entire game, there's a theme of hope that exists within the storyline that contrasts the dark feel the game has to it. yet in the end after all is set right, the final scene closes the game with the deku butler crying next to the warped tree that you first see at the beginning of the game. I guess it's often overlooked, because there's an obscure reference to the deku butler's lost son during a side quest and the connection has to be made that the transformation masks incorperated the soul of a deceased, but it ends the game on a bitter note. Very effective in my opinion, it's not as cut and dry as some other endings you see now.
Final fantasy VII opening, Aerith's scene, and even the end are epic. Probably would go to my top list. Final Fantasy franchise has absolutely amazing cut scenes in general though.
I thought the ending to Portal I was friggen amazzzzinnggg. Cute and witty. I enjoyed it very much.
Kingdom Heart's I ending was also pretty amazing.
Dungeon Keeper intros were always also hilarious and enjoyable.
Red Alert I: Intro was pretty awesome at the time as well.
I also thought the intro-cut scene to Oblivion was great. Made the whole thing feel epic.
In the middle of Star Ocean: Til the End of Time, there is an amazing cut scene that blew my mind as well.
I'm a massive OOT fan and I can assure you that OOT definitely doesn't deserve to be on that list. This isn't even a popularity contest as much as the guiness people googling "video games" and picking random ones.

I have to agree. OOT is definitely in my top 5 games of ALL time, but that's because of it's amazing gameplay. If the list was about the game with the best game play, OOT deserves the number 1 spot - but for cut-scenes.... no, not at all.
FF7 + FF8 ff7 ending = fuckin 7 minute musical arrangement of like 20 different songs and after ff7 ending, if you wait a minute or two...........prelude theme starts playing to a starry sky background..........wtf epicness
Just like to throw in an honorable mention for the credits of a little game on PSN from a while back, Fat Princess... Never had so much fun with the credits in my gaming life.
One of the first games to have cutscenes and the first that really put you into an actual story. It probably helped a lot that I was 8 years old at the time, doubt the story still holds up. But I fell in love with it at the time.
Probably number 2 on my list is Super Metroid, when Mother Brain is about to kill you and the baby Metroid comes out of nowhere to save you. The music actually included the sounds of a baby crying. Mother Brain then kills the baby. You easily get your revenge, but you don't really feel like you won at the end and it was mildly controversial that way.
I thought it was brilliant game development to end with a simple objective "Survive" even though you know it's impossible, and it's things like that I want to incorporate into my own games when I graduate and become and developer (being an indie dev is my dream ^^)
I've never played Black Ops so I can't comment on that.
did a great job of giving the players a small taste of the rivalrly between the brotehrs of sparda, with the latter part displaying just how much of a cocky badass he was as a youngster
another one i fucking loved was
nicely set up just a taste of the challenges/bosses/experience this amazing game had in wait for you
I think why this list doesn't have starcraft in it or any good pc games, is that it is the greatest 'video games' which, unless I am mistaken, more pointed towards consoles. If it was greatest computer games, then I feel there would be a much better list. This is just my opinion and what I've seen video and computer games as. The list is a lot more favoured towards console.
FFX definitely takes the cake for best ending cutscene IMO. Even having beaten the entire game several times, it's the only cutscene that has moved me to tears in all the games I've played, and I played a lot of games.
Part 1 of 4 of the ending. It will probably only take you 30-40 minutes to watch the cut-scenes and battles. Which is nothing compared to the 60-80 hours it will take you to get that far in the game.
Was going to post the opening to FF 7, of course someone beat me to it. Also was thinking of Kingdom Hearts, but again.. Anyway, here is the end to the best Zelda game (yes, better than Ocarina) I still get choked up when i see it.

(Sort of) the end for FFX-II. Song gives me chills, and its a pretty great dual love story. Goddam, it took forever to get that 100% completion for the final scene.
For some background, here's the wikipedia article.
The story begins as Yuna, Rikku and Paine recover Yuna's stolen Garment Grid from the Leblanc Syndicate in the first of several encounters in which they vie for spheres. The game is punctuated by a narration of Yuna addressing Tidus, as though she is recounting the events of the game to him as they occur in a style similar to Tidus' own narration in Final Fantasy X. Although Yuna's quest is to find clues that may lead her to Tidus, much of the storyline of the game follows the clash of the factions that have established themselves in the time since the coming of the Eternal Calm in Final Fantasy X, and the uncovering of hidden legacies from Spira's ancient history. A significant portion of the game's events are unnecessary for the completion of the main storyline, but much of the depth of the story—including characterization and background details—are featured in the optional content,[1] which generally follows how each part of Spira is healing in the time since the passing of Sin. As the game progresses, the hostilities between the Youth League and New Yevon come to a head. Meanwhile, the Gullwings discover an ancient sphere containing images of an enormous machina weapon called "Vegnagun" that was secretly buried beneath the city of Bevelle. The weapon has enough power to threaten all of Spira,[7][8] and, moreover, it is revealed to the player that Vegnagun is unable to distinguish friend from foe once activated.[9] The Gullwings then join forces with the Leblanc Syndicate to investigate the underground areas of the city in an attempt to destroy the machine before it can be used by either side in the upcoming conflict. However, discovering a large tunnel recently dug into the floor of the weapon's chamber, they realize that Vegnagun has apparently been moved to the Farplane, located at Spira's core. Disagreements between Spira's factions are soon punctuated further after the disappearance of Baralai, Nooj, and Gippal—the leaders of New Yevon, the Youth League and the Machine Faction respectively. Returning to the underground areas of Bevelle, the Gullwings discover the missing faction leaders discussing Vegnagun and learn that the machine's artificial intelligence allows it to detect hostility and to respond by activating itself and fleeing.[10] Additionally, it is revealed that Nooj had come to Bevelle with the intention of destroying Vegnagun previously, prompting it to flee to the Farplane.[11] The player then learns that Paine had once been friends with all three men, assigned to be their sphere recorder while they were candidates for the Crimson Squad, an elite group intended to be assigned leadership of Crusader chapters across Spira.[12] Two years earlier in a cave beneath Mushroom Rock Road called "the Den of Woe," just before the failed Operation Mi'ihen, the squad's final exercise was conducted. Within the cave, the various squad candidates were swarmed by pyreflies and driven to kill one another. The only survivors were Paine, Baralai, Gippal, and Nooj, who were themselves targeted by the Order of Yevon afterward when they revealed having seen images of Vegnagun while in the cave. Soon after, Nooj shot his surviving comrades and left them to die, severing the friendship the group had with one another. However, at this time, it is revealed that he was not acting of his own accord when he shot them. The feelings that drove the squad members to kill one another are revealed to have been the despair of the game's antagonist, Shuyin, who died 1000 years earlier.[13] Before the four survivors could leave the cave, the spirit of Shuyin—requiring a host in order to interact with the world physically[14]—had possessed Nooj, and later forced him to shoot his comrades.[15] In the time since, Shuyin had been subtly goading Nooj on a subconscious level, coercing him to approach Vegnagun so that he could use Nooj's body to control it.[14]
A screenshot of Yuna's concert, which prompts the memories of Lenne to emerge from the Songstress dressphere. Nooj's will was too strong for him to be completely controlled, and his desire to destroy the large machina prompted it to flee.[14] Now desiring a new host, Shuyin leaves Nooj's body and possesses Baralai's, pursuing Vegnagun to the Farplane. Nooj and Gippal follow in pursuit, asking Yuna to keep things under control on the surface. In doing so, the player must fight and defeat each of Yuna's aeons from Final Fantasy X, their spirits now corrupted by Shuyin's despair on the Farplane.[16] During this mission, Yuna falls into the Farplane and meets Shuyin, who mistakes her for a woman named "Lenne". Feeling affection toward him that is not her own and finding herself unwilling to move away from him, she listens as Shuyin describes how he "awoke" after he had died, alone and unable to find Lenne. He then expresses anger that Spira's citizens have not yet come to understand the heartache that war can cause, and reveals that he has developed a plan to use the old (but still operational) Vegnagun to destroy all of Spira, ending the possibility of there ever again being a war. In so doing, he believes that he will be making the world a better place.[17] The player learns that 1000 years before the game, Shuyin was a famous blitzball player in the high-tech metropolis of Zanarkand, and the lover of a popular songstress and summoner—Lenne. Shuyin's memory would then form Tidus in Dream Zanarkand in the events of Final Fantasy X. The two lived during Zanarkand's war with the more powerful Bevelle, and during the course of the war, Zanarkand ordered all summoners to the front lines, separating the couple. Believing that Lenne would die in battle, Shuyin decided that the only way to save her was to infiltrate Bevelle, commandeer Vegnagun, and use it to destroy Zanarkand's enemies. However, Lenne perceived Shuyin's intentions, and—unwilling to allow him to take the lives of many others for her sake—followed him.[18] When she caught up to Shuyin in Bevelle, he had only just begun to operate Vegnagun's control panel, an organ integrated into its head. Before he could use the giant cannon located in its mouth to destroy the city, Lenne asked him to stop. Shuyin did as she asked, but a group of Bevelle soldiers arrived a moment later and shot the couple. Fatally injured, Shuyin failed to hear Lenne saying that she loved him before they died.[19] Over the course of the following 1000 years, Shuyin's despair and resentment over his failure to save Lenne bonded to pyreflies and caused him to constantly experience the anguish of that moment.[20] Over time, his despair became so powerful that it began acting on its own,[21] and he came to believe that—in addition to helping the world—he would fade away with Lenne if he destroyed Spira. Now with an understanding of Shuyin's hatred for war, Yuna manages to return to the surface, and the Gullwings organize a concert to which everyone in Spira is invited, supporters of the Youth League and New Yevon alike. Additionally, the Songstress dressphere worn by Yuna is revealed to be made up of Lenne's memories, resulting in a sphere screen projecting them to everyone in attendance during the concert. Witnessing images of Shuyin and Lenne's last moments, Spira's citizens begin to understand the unproductive nature of their disagreements. The player then learns that it was because of Lenne's memories that Shuyin had mistaken Yuna for Lenne and she had felt affection toward him.[22] Although the factional fighting has ceased, Shuyin has nearly carried out his plan to use Vegnagun's cannon to destroy the planet from beneath its surface. Joining forces with the Leblanc Syndicate once again, the Gullwings make their way to the Farplane and find Gippal and Nooj already battling Vegnagun. Working together, they manage to disable the giant machina before its cannon can fire at Spira. Finally confronting Shuyin, Lenne's consciousness emerges from the Songstress dressphere and convinces him to abandon his mission and be at peace. Thanking Yuna, Lenne guides Shuyin's spirit to peace on the Farplane.[citation needed] Subsequently, the fayth once located in Bevelle appears before Yuna and thanks her as well. He then asks her if she would like to see "him" again. If the player replies with "Yes" and a sufficient percentage of the game's optional storyline has been completed, the fayth locates Tidus's scattered pyreflies and sends them to Besaid, where they reform; thus, when Yuna returns home, she is reunited with Tidus.[citation needed] Players who achieve 100% completion in addition to reviving Tidus see an additional reunion scene in Zanarkand.[citation needed]
For simply cutscenes, I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 9's Alexander vs Bahamut cutscene. It was really something at the time, I remember thinking it had the best graphics of anything I had ever seen!

Hahahaha... EXACTLY what I thought. I literally lol'd when I saw this list the other day. Absolutely ridiculous.
That poll was one of the most ridiculous things I've seen recently. There are way too many good ending cutscenes out there, so here is one that really stuck out to me just in 2011 alone.
Warhammer and the superheros one that were already posted were the best. I also like the onajurshu ninja one. Witcher 1 had an amazing trailer. Witcher assasin of kings has an amazing trailer. Star wars has some amazing ones. MGS's fight was great. God of War has some nice action. Starcraft BW had a good one with Tassadar's death, very emotionally stimulating, but the graphics and sound effects weren't too great.
omg, how is FF7 up there? The ending was not clever....or anything. They went and fought seph and that was it. I am not saying that it was a bad game but the ending was not AMAZING. The game play to it was pretty good but come on...the ending was just ok to good not amazing.
Imo, FF10 has a wayyy better ending if you want to compare ending. FF10 ending had a great plot twist at the end and it was pretty depressing lol. Either way, the ending was much deeper.
The ending of Final Fantasy VII wasn't even that good. That being said, EVERYONE knows which cutscene actually did stand out in that game, as I'm sure most of us who loved it probably all screamed at the TV.
Why is god of war up there? the setting was cool and all, but the people who wrote it obviously just kept adding more and more bull crap to keep making the games...
