Dust 514 PS3 Exclusive

As many of you should be aware, the Team Liquid forum community has had a very successful chapter in the internet spaceship mmo game known as Eve. CCP, the company who makes eve, is set to release a new game this summer called Dust 514. This game is a first person shooter that is linked directly to the Eve Player base. Basically, while thousands of Eve players fight over star systems above, Dust players will be on the ground fighting it out for the planets. What makes this unique is that both groups will directly and indirectly impact each other.

What is Dust, or are you trying to make me play another Halo/CoD ripoff?

Dust 514 is a sort of MMO Shooter. While there are some inevitable similarities to bigger named games of the past, there are several a good reasons why Dust 514 has been winning "Most Innovative" at pretty much any trade show they go to. Here are some key points to the game.

+ Show Spoiler +
1. Game Matches matter. While Dust does have a traditional auto matching system, the true magic lays with taking player contracts. Contracts are made by Eve players to assault or defend planets. While in the past only spaceships were used to conquer systems, planetary conquest will be a huge key in taking over new systems.

2. Combat Classes Revisited You may be familiar with the combat classes or kit type systems in CoD or the Battlefield Series. Dust 514 takes a whole new approach to kits. Instead of grinding out thousands of death match games to unlock your fancy new rifle, Dust will use a modified version Eve's skill training system.

This system works very simply, whether you are playing or not you are gaining skill points. You use those skill points to purchase new skills, like more damage, better armor, or better vehicle handling. Theres about 7 years of skills to go through, however when you do play matches you get pretty decent chunks of skill points depending on how you performed in the match, this cuts down that time significantly but still specializing is key.

This allows you to specialize, develop goals, and make your character unique. Perhaps you want to make your character an expert pistol shot with the ability to fly the most advanced air craft in the game. No more grinding or getting frustrated that your kit doesn't have access to that one really cool side arm you wanted.

Some More info on fitting your kits

3. Customization Customization doesn't just end at developing your personal kit. Vehicles will be a major portion of the game with over 26 vehicles planned. These vehicles range for fast scout vehicles (think Halo warthog) to different tanks and eve aircraft. Also these vehicles can be customized by changing out their 'fittings' you can use this to adjust what kind of weapon the vehicle is using as well and adjusting its speed and armor. As long as you brought the supplies with you, these fittings can be adjusted on the field allowing you to change tactics.
More Info on Vehicles

4. Cross Game interaction Interactions between Dust and Eve go both ways. Eve players need to control planets/disrupt their enemies and Dust players need isk(money) to replace lost and destroyed equipment and/or purchase upgrades. However the interaction doesn't stop there. Lets say a dust group is running into a sizable obstacle, for example an obnoxious tank that just wont seem to die, no matter how many times you charge at it. No problem, you can call for another Eve player to bring out whats called a Dreadnaught (think :Battlecruiser operational) and bomb the site from orbit. Or perhaps on the other side of the equation, your adversaries are bombing YOU from orbit. The planet you're on may have been upgraded by the current owners to have defenses against orbital attacks, controlling those defenses can allow you to destroy *permanently* some eve players shiny new ship hes raining death down upon you with.
Interview about Interaction

5. You wont have to play Blood Gulch 9000 Times The Dust map system is modular. While at launch you only temperate planets will be available to fight over, this will involve nearly 6000 different permutations of maps. Additionally the goal is to continue to add in new planet types to fight in over each of dusts free twice a year expansions.

The Hatchery Needs You!
The Hatchery is the premier TL corporation in Eve and runs the Team Liquid Alliance. We would like to incorporate a dust division into our alliance line up. The benefit for Dust players is that they will already have an established portal to the Team Liquid community in the Eve universe. Eve player experience will be able to help Dust players understand the fittings systems (which is already used by eve players) as well as understand the current political map. Additionally, we (or at least I will) should be able to help finance the dust group into getting a strong head start on the battlefield.

FAQ

Why is this only for PS3? - CCP wanted to develop a new non pc market. Microsoft was unwilling to allow cross console game play, nor would it allow access with the Eve servers, thus they were dropped from the lineup.

How much will it cost? - Dust 514 is now a free to play game. Micro transactions will not give advantages over items you purchase with earned game money.

Do I get a space ship? - Dust corporations can purchase a war barge which is necessary to have for contracts involving Null Sec space (the player owned areas). It acts as a supply vessel and a sort of customizable lobby. Early Barge Video

When does this come out? - Late 2012

Will there be beta? - Yes currently currently in NDA closed beta with weekly beta events, you can sign up at dust514.com or at the PSN homespot for Dust 514. Additionally if you pay 20$ for the Dust Mercenary pack, which includes some collector type items and 20$ of ingame currency you can get into the beta immediately.

Beta servers are typically up Thurs-Monday

Have they mentioned how the economy in the game will work, will you need an active eve account to get ISK?

At the onset nearly all non micro transacted gear will be seeded by npcs in the dust equivalent of station purchases. When last asked CCP said that dust players would be using isk and that isk could be generated by playing in auto matches or by taking on contracts in the eve world.

So no, you won't need an eve character to make money, however you are able to transfer money between eve and dust characters.

At some point in the future, CCP has said that they would like to make dust gear manufactured by eve players, but at the beginning it was necessary to have npcs sell it to get the market rolling.

Because taking on contracts in null sec require you to have a war barge and to have that barge in the contested system, things like supply chains for vehicles/clones/gear are important for protracted campaigns and eve players will be incredibly useful.

While war barges have been called expensive by ccp, that term is subjective. I am hoping to use my eve wealth to donate a barge to the dust cause.

How does the Hatchery plan to utilize the Dust players? Do both games fight over the same null sec? If so, what happens when planets are taken over in an alliance's sov?

I feel I know too little about this so can't really focus a question, but would appreciate some kind of overview on how this works, if that information is available

Yes the games fight over the same locations. Both world are linked on the same servers. The exact process hasnt been announced, but the general feeling is that in order for a system to have sov changed over there will be need for planetary battles. Now whether thats a system of controlling the most planets or controlling a capital planet hasn't been revealed. In terms of taking over an individual planet the interaction video talks a little about it.

The Hatchery and the rest of the TL alliance lives in null sec. Ideally if we can field our own dust teams they would operate much like the hatchery has, freedom to do what you want but a strong enough core that can make much larger alliances (like reddit's and something awfuls') look silly when we beat them. If you spend any amount of time in the eve thread, we've always excelled on taking on much larger groups and beating them.

The Dust beginning will be controlled by EVE, if the Hatchery wants a piece of the cake (and I think CCP made Dust interaction very profitable for the EVE players) we are going to fund the first few months for our own business. After that, we will see. So you can count me in the EVE side.

Well in eve there are four main playable 'races' which are all technically humans. These four races have very different design and warfare philosophies. However as a mercenary the decision to be one race over another does not impede your ability to work with or use the technology of other races, it mostly helps you determine your avatar and starting skill set.

Once you have a race, it should work much like eve does. You're thrown into an NPC corp with other players to get acquainted with your new game. Here you should be able to do any sort of quick play auto matching (which typically won't affect eve) or you can look for open contracts. The concept behind open contracts is that the Eve or other dust corp (they can conquer their own planets too) is looking for bodies, you will join other freelancers to either take solely or support perhaps a smaller group of organized mercs in their objectives.

At any point you can join one of the thousands of other eve corporations or create/join a dust corporation independent of eve players. This is like joining a clan and while you'll certainly be looking to get paid you may find yourself more involved with the political nature of the eve universe. Scheming with your Eve counterparts on how best to conquer or defend the universe from other players.

Of course you could just simply join a corporation that solely markets itself as a coordinated group of freelance guns for hire. One of the nice things about Dust & Eve is the freedom to operate how you want.

(you can still do auto matching regardless of whether or not you're in a corp)

I'm excited that Dust will bring a lot of Planetary things to EVE, so that Planets aren't just things that are in space with you and you launch factories at. They'll have people on them, and invested value that could be lost, which is more in line with the core values of EVE.

Seems to me like a really interesting concept.

I never really got attracted to EVE online, but maybe I'll give Dust a shot.

Thanks for posting this!

I'm wondering if enough people will be playing Dust 514 for planetary equipment and infantry to be a worthwhile investment for EVE players.
