I have often wondered how large portion of gamers use invert mouse, and figured this site has good amount of gamers that just might answer the poll. I am just curious, and have no other motives behind this poll, so here it is. And I mean shooters and such. If you only fly inverted, vote no.

Poll: Do you use invert mouse?

Yes (75)

61%

No (47)

39%

122 total votes

Your vote: Do you use invert mouse?

(Vote): Yes
(Vote): No

I believe one of the reasons why people use it is Duke Nukem 3D. Wikipedia:
3D Realms' Duke Nukem 3D became one of the first games that supported using the mouse to aim up and down. This and other games using the Build engine had an option to invert the Y-axis. The "invert" feature actually made the mouse behave in a manner that users now regard as non-inverted (by default, moving mouse forward resulted in looking down). Soon after, id Software released Quake, which introduced the invert feature as users now know it.

I have seen many people rationalizing for and against using invert with arguments such as "I am controlling my head/eyes/gun sights/etc. with mouse", but the fact is that moving your mouse forward isn't any more logically up than it is down.

Personally I do use it, and what got me wondering this again was Battlefield. I am sure the amount of invert users is not negligible, but still it's amazing how some games fail to offer such settings properly. In Bad Company 2, the mouse axis was always opposites in chopper and UAV regardless of the setting, it never got fixed. In BF3 it seems they have done it again with airplanes.

I disagree with your claim that there is no rationality behind non-inverted mouse movement. The screen is perpendicular and towards you, if rotating on the x axis, the screen has tablet like quality to it, making it more intuitive to have forward be translated as 'up'. Its just a spacial relations things.

That being said, I do not think either way is better, but non-inverted mouse movement is more intuitive to spacial relations than inverted when first being exposed. I personally could play with both, non-inverted is more comfortable for me though.

I definitely don't use it for mouse, never makes any sense to me. Do those who vote 'yes' also have an inverted mouse in windows? (is that even possible without tweaking/scripting)
If not, don't you get confused when physically moving the mouse away+right equates to top-right of windows but bottom right of a game?

I do think playing non-inverted gives you slightly more control. Inverted messes with your brain.

Just play whatever FPS and try to circle your opponent with your crosshairs. At least I wasn't able to do this even when I was used to invert.

Inverted in FPS seems more natural to me, be damned to know why. Been using that since when I was like 9years old.

Don't really think one or the other way has any real factor into how good someone can be, it's down to practice.

Well you just rotated it to one specific direction. Rotate it in the other direction and your logic fails.

No you silly. In Windows you're moving cursor, while in games your crosshair never moves from the center of the screen. Actually games such as Operation Flashpoint made many people convert from inverted to noninverted. That game had crosshairs that moved within the screen which was a real brainfuck to use with invert.

I specifically mentioned the projection of the screen as an axis, did you even think before you posted? Lets take your scenario, where we spin it downward form the horizontal axis, the screen is no longer in front of you, a screen is one sided, so please at least give your own rational before failing at destroying mine.

I don't understand why you would want to invert it. I guess if it works for you than that's fine, but to me it just doesn't make any sense.

On the PC; I can only play FPSes with a regular mouse setup in terms of direction. Third person shooters are different however - with over-the-shoulder camera games, up and down is inverted as is the horizontal movement; non-over the shoulder cameras have differing up-down/left-right depending on the game.

Consoles is all inverted however, both vertical and horizontal for FPS and TPS. I don't know why but it just feels awkward to have regular controls in either axis.

I don't see why it wouldn't make sense for those asking - in shooters, you are shifting the camera basically to "aim" at objects, so why wouldn't inversion and non-inversion make sense - it's just a difference of where you would hold and pivot this imaginary camera.

I guess I just don't see a difference between aiming your gun top right and aiming your mouse top right. When I think of a mouse, I look at it from the top, naturally, so moving the mouse to top right makes me think the cursor/xhair/etc should move to top right as well. For inverted, my brain doesn't click like that, but it's actually pretty fascinating that it seems natural/intuitive to you. No inversion on the x-axis though right?

I wonder what causes this difference between inverted and non-inverted players..

I personally don't, on both pc and console.

A question to people who use inverted: Did you always use inverted? If you did/didn't, why?

I always thought non-inverted was easier, but I bet if I learnt inverted first I'd be saying it the other way.

Mouse: no inversion.
Controller: yes to vertical inversion, no to horizontal.

I have no real reasoning behind it. I've just been playing like that since forever - it's just natural to me now. Anytime I play an FPS on console at somebody's house I have to change the inversion settings to on or else I feel like I've gone functionally retarded trying to aim.

Joysticks are naturally inverted (think airplanes). Mice are different because you are actually moving the mouse the exact same as the cursor. I almost get angry when people dont use inverted controls for flying. You pull back to go up in a plane not push forward.

Your scenario is having the screen below the eyes facing up, and mine is over the eyes facing down. When your argument is based on using the equipment the way nobody uses them, I am allowed to do that too.

The only reason why i use invert mouse is because when i went for the first time in an internet cafe, i actually played quake 2 chaos, i didn't know anything about mouse configuration, the mouse was invert, and i thought it was normal, so there we go. I haven't changed since then. Any questions?^^

edit: i don't have invert mouse in windows, invert mouse is not that extraordinary when you think about it, all air flight game on console you had invert cursor back in the day, I have no idea what it is right now since my video game culture stopped when brood war was released. I don't know why but I have always used inverted in FPS. After having using it for so long it just feels weird with it turned off.

I have always played shooters inverted. The rare game that doesn't offer the option to play inverted (I seem to remember that Oni didn't allow it) is nearly impossible for me to play, because it's so ingrained in my brain.

I honestly have no idea why inverted y-axis makes so much sense to me. It's very possible that it really is from Duke Nukem, since I played a lot of that back in the day. It could also be from playing so many flying games as a kid.

Regardless, I don't know that it really matters. As long as games keep offering both options to players, there's no advantage or disadvantage to preferring it either way.

You'd be amazed how quickly your brain can adapt and learn new things (of course, it would be a LOT harder if you were already trained one way or another).

I blame space combat simulators (X-wing & Wing Commander II specifically) for my mouse-inverting habits.
I do find it quite strange that some people prefer to invert for some games and not for others.

I invert my mouse because I played flight sims with a joystick before I ever played an FPS. Mind you, this was when I was a kid. I'd spend HOURS playing Chuck Yeager's Flight Simulator (P-51 controls so tight), so pulling back meant 'up' and pushing forward meant 'down'.
I cannot stand ignorance or dismissiveness. I edit every post I make-- I've edited this sig three times in an hour.

I did not know this feature existed on anything except airplane simulation and I am completely appalled by the fact that people are allowed to play backwards D:

I used to play FPS games with inverted mouse for some reason, I chalk that up to playing Tie Fighter with a mouse for the longest time with inverted mouse for flying. I don't do it anymore though.

I think the best games for inverted is like.. flying games?

I cant imagine playing anything else backwards

For example i remember one fighting game(cant remember which) where sometimes you had a challenge or something that would invert your moves A-Y becomes Y-A along side left to right right to left etc and that was impossible for me.
Same with the inverted thing in GH3
