I am wondering what level I should get Iron Grip and Static Blows
I'm guessing Iron Grip is last?
I'm currently working my way to Static Blows and will be pick up Fitness and probably Divine Toughness along the way before actually getting Static Blows
this is my current build at Lvl 52. currently in A3 Cruel doing Docks runs. what is good to start doing A3 progression in HC?
I've been playing in public groups for HC much more than I did while playing SC. I'm finding myself liking FFA loot rules a lot more than to named because with with FFA I don't need to be respectful to named loot while some asshat doesn't and keeps jacking loot while the party leader does nothing.
Also experienced having someone die in HC in A3 Cruel Docks.
I run a very similar build, mrpetrovs tank ranger, I probably wouldnt get iron grip until late, as the bonus from str wont be that noticable until your far into your tree anyways. I did act 3 progression at 58, with 80 res all running grace/wrath/anger w/ blood magic .. 5L chest , about a 1500dps elemental hit 900dps light arrow. Went to maybe just over half life on piety, was pretty easy fight though. Had 2200 health when I killed her. As for static blows, ive been wondering as well, however it seems to me that going straight for it would make progression in merciless very difficult with the low HP you would have.
Currently at lvl 66, 80/80/50(light resist) -60 chaos is stopping me from going anywhere past fellshrine right now though
Just experienced my first hardcore death. A level 13 Marauder....RIP bro! I was in the ship graveyard and got surrounded by some Rhoas, some of the ghost pirates, and one of those Mervils sorcerer bitches spamming me the whole time. I died really fucking quick. May have had some form of desync in there too but I was prob good as dead.
Debating rolling another Marauder or trying out Ranger and going for Lightning Arrow, though that's going to be nerfed...sooo.
Are daggers with elemental a thing anyone actually uses? .I sure hope so, pretty decent roll if so, however I really have no idea, I didn't think daggers were that popular for anything besides spell/crit for EK users .
Sorry for all the item questions, tough to find stuff through searches on their trade forums and whatnot
1.2 speed makes for sadness. Pretty sure that makes it undesirable, since attack speed is pretty important.

The general rule for iron grip is that it's worthless before you have at least 200 str. And since most of your str comes from the left side of the tree, that means you should get it pretty late.
Seems super awesome and fun and you can win prizes, will definitely compete, although I hold no delusions about winning any of them or anything, will be fun to see how well I can do in general.
Things like this and leagues and stuff are going to give this game a ton of replayability.

Is this 7AM EST? I'm really awful with times.
Which one? The first event is at 00:00 GMT (+00:00)
also worth adding that it would still be Thursday in the US then.

The start times for almost all of them seem pretty reasonable for US Eastern Time. Obviously not all of them are ideal, but there's like 3-4 a day pretty equally spaced out.

I think you're mistaken; first race is at 9 AM PST Friday, 22nd.
It was the same in D2, I don't understand the point of playing this game if you don't come up with your own build by yourself... Take some pride in what you've achieved by yourself instead of being some subpar version of a "pro" gamer.
(This is not targetted to the guy above me, more like a generic rant)
i don't understand the point of taking your own beliefs and applying them to other people just enjoy the game instead of bothering yourself over meaningless things

But again like I said, I understand that's what people who like PoE are looking for. To me, that actually doesn't make PoE any better than D3. They both fail to change or solve the ARPG problem.
This isn't an ARPG problem, it's ARPG gameplay. That's how it works. If you make any build or customization viable for the hardest content, there's no reason to customize anything. You get a basic D3 situation where customization is irrelevant because everything is about just as viable, there's no thoughtprocess needed. Pick a skill which looks fun and use only that one.
What makes fun customization is when you can make "bad" builds work by using your brain and gear. Sure, you might not be able to do every single map in the game, but who said you have to do that? Should even any class at all be able to do that? I say no. Min-maxing is fine as long as it's fun to do and everything else is fun as well, your duelist summoner doesn't HAVE to be able to do the hardest map in the game.
The problem here is that you cannot make a bad build work with your brain and gear in every situation. It won't happen. For example, right now AFAIK there is no melee in the top levels, all those builds are ranged, because melee just will not survive. Things like a triple elementalist witch also suck because your survivability is too low, etc, there are countless examples that just won't work on the endgame, and there's no way they will work, barring some balance patches.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but what you're saying is just wrong, "bad" builds will not work.
You're missing my point. Bad builds work just fine; They just don't work at the highest level. Which makes sense, because what's the fun of making a "good" build when a "bad" build does just as well? You can make any crazy bad build you want and beat normal with it. If you're really good, maybe you can even get to merciless with it. You KNOW it's a bad build, but you're making it work anyway, which is the fun part. It wouldn't be a fun part if you could get it to the hardest maps in the game, because it wouldn't be a bad build if you could do that, it would just be a build like any other.

I got another one dropped on me with much better rolls, so I'm thinking about offloading this one cos it takes up so much stash space.
interesting thing to determine the value of a searing touch is the itemlevel, that is if it can roll 6 sockets or not. afaik iLvL 50 is enough to roll 6. to find out the itemlevel pick up the item and write: "/itemlevel" in chat.

Mordk is very wrong about melee not working at the highest levels. It works perfectly fine in SC, Yuof is a fine example sitting in the top 20 not only is he fully melee, he is playing a duelist, a class that arguably has no benefit for any build over a marauder doing the same build. As long as you accept that you WILL die in this game if you play melee, HC is not going to happen due to the fact that getting one shot is ALWAYS possible and playing a melee character, it's just a matter of time until the rolls line up to instagib you. Beyond that, melee is plenty viable.
http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/42623 Here is a great guide to a completely viable high-level melee shadow build using a combination of flicker strike, double strike, and lightning strike to deal with various situations. You COULD theoretically do nothing but spam lightning strike in this build, but that is now how the creator plays it in the least, and he does high-level content all the time. Did I mention he uses CI and rarely even takes visible damage.
The concept of "bad builds" is very handicapping in a game like Path of Exile. Perhaps the build that has most impressed me is the guy using righteous fire for the spell damage boost: .
Because the game is not competitive by nature, you are free to make dumbass builds and they will work well into the high levels as long as you do it right.
Pick a theme you want, find 2-3 skills that will enable it, and fill out from there. For the newbies, I would suggest copying the standard builds like a summoner witch, dual spork templar, sweep marauder, or lightning arrow ranger for your first character, but once you figure out the basics, have fun with the game. There is a LOT of room between noob and high level HC char.
You don't have to be the best, all you have to do is make it work, and there is a lot of room for that in a game like Path of Exile. Stop trying to compete all the damn time and just have some fun farming some monsters.
edit: all that being said, I DO think melee has some problems in Path of Exile in the sense that there is really no reason to build a melee character. In D2, Barbarians had INSANE damage output. You were giving up the safety of ranged attacks for the raw strength of being able to kill basically anything in 1 or 2 hits. In Path of Exile, melee seems to be even more deadly than it was in D2 while also providing your character less DPS. Skills like cleave and the various melee strikes need to do like 2x as much damage to make it worth charging into harms way in the first place. Otherwise, melee will never be "desirable".
