I'd assume you'll be heading toward Resolute Techniques first? And, heading towards the starting area of Marauders is very good for survivability, and is recommended. Why Marauder? Simply because it feels safer than other classes (save maybe for Templar). He also gets a ton of useful gems from quests: Weapon Elemental Damage, Life Leech, Life on Hit, Reduced Mana and so on. As far as I know the only needed gems that he does not get from quests are Lesser Multiple Projectiles and Lightning Arrow, but you can easily get those for a small price. Chain and Elemental Hit are drops, and neither Marauders or Rangers get Enfeeble or Summon Skeletons (huge survivability boosters). You start off as 2h melee and switch to bows around Cruel a3, when ranged attacks start to look like a better option because the damage goes up a lot. Build around level 55. Pretty straightforward, you rush Resolute Technique, then grab Blood Magic and continue along the tree picking up goodies. You also grab the +Max Endurance Charges nodes and refund them when you go full ranged. In the Dex area of the tree go right first for Fury Bolts and the Agility node so you have enough Dex for bows without having to use a Light Quiver (the one with implicit +dex) - feel free to go to the right first if you do have a good one though-. Pick up the Savant (+30 int) nodes asap so you can level up Spell Totem and Summon Skeletons for more durable meat shields, as well as higher level auras! Next up it is time to increase both health and damage by going to the Templar area. Next, apply finishing touches. Skills: i. Ground Slam + Heavy Strike/Infernal Blow (whatever does most damage) when melee, Lightning Arrow + Elemental Hit as ranged; ii. Decoy Totem and later on Summon Skeletons + Spell Totem keep stuff busy while you kill them; iii. Enduring Cry and Warlord's Mark help mitigate huge amounts of damage when melee, Leap Slam gives good mobility; iv. Curses like Enfeeble or Temporal Chains will help when you are using ranged weapons; v. Auras: Wrath, Anger and Grace; vi. Huge health pool is recommended! | ||

Are you sure it will be "marginal" even when he has +280str just from passive nodes even at this level? | ||

I would actually go for it sooner, but I lack the requirements to equip bows if I don't go for the Dex area relatively fast. Melee past a2 Cruel is a nightmare. | ||
