Only cookie cutter builds can do well in hell, both vengeance and hammer are great, but you need to pick one and base your entire character around it, maxing out the skill and appropriate aura/synergies etc.
You can't really be a jack of all trades and expect to do well in hell.

Anyone else play on the Asia server? I only have fairly low level characters on there at the moment though

It seems I need a weapon with ignore target defence, a bunch of +poison resist items (-40 atm) for andy and radamant, or an item with amp though. Physical immunes are ruining my day. wands are too expensive. I can't imagine I don't have the money for a merc. yeah hell pretty much separates the good chars from the bad. i'm surprised vengeance isn't doing well though. what weapon are you using? edit: better yet what gear/skills are you using? A malice cowbill, ancients pledge shield? can't remember, tirel helm, some good resist armor.
I can spec 20 into vengeance and 10ish to salvation, but the way shield damage is higher than base weapon damage, enhanced damage doesn't really help as much as it should compared to smite. Sacrifice and vengeance only do 50% more than smite, but they miss a lot more (50% chance to hit max) and don't have stun.
Blessed hammer at lvl 20 and Concentration at lvl 20 with some +skill items gives me hammers that hit for 600. I think monster regen greatly negates the effect of the hammers since I have to run around a lot to use them. My resists are only +10 with concentration aura.
I could syngergise blessed hammer with vigor or blessed aim and put one point in smite for magic immunes. Open wounds and crushing blow do wonders. This would probably work. But I'd have to give up my 75% block rate without heavy dexterity investment, and about 65 resist all.

If you're going to go for hammers (which I recommend, it's so strong) you don't have to worry about physical damage for magic immunes. All the magic immunes I've seen are undead - and Holy Bolt (which you need for hammers anyway) deals with them very nicely. Give it a look

only 600? I remember hammers that hit for like several K even without good equipment...

The lack of synergies is your problem. You're trying to do too much all at once. Hammers should be kind of workable even without decent gear as long as it's synergized. Vengeance requires a weapon with enough physical damage for the skill to multiply off of, so your malice doesn't work very well. And vengeance absolutely needs conviction, which will also help with your attack rating problems. So I would say if you have a respec left, go all out into hammers and shop/gamble for +skill items. If not, then it's time to start a brand new char!

try this cheap hammerdin gear
armor - vipermagi rings - whatever ammy - whatever shield - spirit in a pally shield weapon - wizard spike helm - rockstopper boots - whatever gloves - trangouls
wizzy + vipermagi + spirit + trang gloves gives 125 fcr [125 for last breakpoint, superfast hammer casting], and TONS of resist [wiz + low vipermagi = 100 res all, with your spirit, rockstopper and anya quests you should have high res in hell]
try to get +skills and res for hell max out blessed hammer, concentration, blessed aim and vigor, then dump the rest into holy shield 1 point into smite, and defensive auras to redemption [for healing]
since you dont have teleport, cast hammers, and run down, hammers start above you, you miss most monsters below you
worked well for me when i didnt have my enigma armor

I'm thinking of starting to play on ladder again after a few years from the game. Anyone have a good sorc build for MFing? If I remember correctly there was a meteorb build? I will mostly go for andy, mephisto, the pits and for the keys. Or will a "one-skill-tree-sorc" be better for this?

Had a bit of fun in an ip game last night, did some baal runs. Also ran the frozen cellar a bit with my firesorc, and got my blizz/ball sorc ready for a week-long baal tournament. Posted some screenshots to keep the spirit alive, I know it always infects me to want to play when I see nice/silly things :p

Assuming online play is a bit similar to offline: Begin with light, it's strong in the very early game if you haven't got equipment. Respec to pure blizzard when you hit 24, it's stronger, and with 1.13 respecs you can respec it to blizz/fb as that is the strongest build without infinity. If you get infinity, respect to lightning.
I've never done übers though, so perhaps you might want to listen to someone else :p

I just finished Act 2 at level 24 with my cold sorc.... stupid Duriel I died at least 10 times, even with the help of a mercenary. At least its over now, whew.

in ladder I just run a pure blizz sorc initially. you dont really need to be strong in the early game since you will be running with teams. the reason to run blizz sorc as your starting char is that she runs hell meph practically naked which gets you started off really well, getting uniques like shako, occy etc. then get infinity and respec to lightning and you have a really fast rusher and hell runner.
question to nepeta. for blizz/fb which are you picking up synergies for?
|
Wtf can you respec now ? O.o
|
i wouldnt do blizz/fb as both fb and blizz need lots of synergies
id go meteorb instead
max meteor, fire mastery, fireball max frozen orb, points into ice mastery up till it gives -100% 1 pt teleport, warmth, static field, any ice armor [i usually go with the first one] rest into firebolt
get around 107% faster cast rate and you tele nice and fast, throw insight on your merc for mass mana

this is theoretically good for soloing hell. but if you are making a sorc for multiplayer/MF purposes, raw damage and speed are more important. i always found FO damage to be really lackluster(which disappoints me because its such a cool spell) even when targeted correctly. and meteor is kinda slow. when i had a meteorb sorc i always found myself spamming FB instead.

fire: 20 firebolt, 20 fireball, 1 warmth (1mastery but I use tal's set) cold: 20 blizz, 20 icebolt, 5 cold mastery, 16 ice blast, 1 frozen armour, 1 nova light: 1 static, 1 telekinesis, 1 teleport
at lvl 97, no infinity. Just try get the cold res of your target down to -100, then stuff the rest into synergies for cold/fire as you see fit. If you're running baal, you need FB to kill wave 2, if you're running Mephisto or AT, you can manage without FB at all.
My gear in case you're interested: full tal's with facets, 2soj, 8 skillers/res charms, cube/tomes. Merc GA/Kiras/eth upped kelpie/amn. I've also got a non-tals blizz/fb sorc, with shako skulders fathom etc, and it's not much of a difference.
@amd 098: Meteorb have been obsolete post 1.09: orb is too weak to stun/kill things, and meteor takes forever to hit.

my favorite MF blizz sorc setup that was semi budget involved using only parts of the tal set.
something like shako, occy, lidless, tal belt, armor and ammy, the MF boots(forget the name) and either magefists or chancies(i believe i could get to the FCR breakpoint without FCR gloves by using only one FCR ring).
to nepeta is your build that much better than a full light sorc w/ infinity?

lol you kids and your dual tree sorcs.
Just go straight blizz and get a solid merc. If you're playing online get an act 2 normal/hell combat merc and give him an insight weapon with a helm with lifeleech (crown of thieves is so good for the price/ vamp gaze is good too but a bit pricy, just get andy's if you're gonna get vamp) and decent armor (you want fortitude on him at some point). If you're playing offline/LAN/IP just get a ton of life leech on any merc (I still prefer norm/hell combat but nightmare offensive is good too).
dual tree is fun but the damage is total garbage when compared to single tree sorcs and with a merc that doesn't die in two seconds a blizz sorc can walk through hell with little to no problems.
