When I think FPS/RTS Hybrid, I think of the lame looking game that is Raven Squad. However, something tells me it was done before but those games aren't mentioned enough. Anyone know a kind of game that blends these two genres together?

A long time ago, I heard of a game called Warsoup that was a Halo + SC (?) mashup, and the intro video looked pretty good... I don't know what became of it.

Savage and Savage 2 blend the 2 genres. I haven't played the game at all, so someone else can do it better justice than me.

I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Natural selection is only a RTS for one person. the commander for the marines. Its a FPS for everyone else playing

Allegiance is another one.

Darkfall Online is an FPS-MMORPG that has some RTS elements (resource collection, city building, siege warfare)

There was an awesome game called Urban Assault back in the late 90's I remember playing a shitload. You could control individual units in FP mode.

I have played both Savage(and S2) and Natural Selection (and watched a lot of beta videos on NS 2).

At the most fundamental levels, these two games combine RTS and FPS play better than any other game I have seen or played. It really depends on if you like Fantasy (Savage) or Sci-Fi (Natural Selection). Both games have fairly equal amounts of shooter, melee, and RTS gameplay.

Like someone has mentioned, the RTS element is only for the "commander" or leader of each team. This role is usually chosen at the start of the map, and on public servers, it is usually the first person who decides to hop in that seat. If the commander sucks however, most servers allow a team to vote-out their commander so a new player can take control.
For both games, when you sit in a commander seat, the game looks and plays almost exactly like an RTS (collect resources with peons, build buildings, research upgrades) except that your military units are other players, not AI controlled, so when you give them an order to "move here" or "build here" you are making a suggestion to them (which they see on the HUD) but they can do their own thing and ignore you.

These games are at least a few years old now, and will not have any where near the player base that games like SC2 or CoD currently have, but in general the players are a lot more helpful and team-play is seen more commonly in public servers. That's sort of the trade off you get when you play niche games like hybrids : fewer players, however the players tend to be of higher quality (as griefers get bored easily).

Last I checked, Savage 2 was completely free and had a few servers that were always populated. Natural Selection (my personal favorite) is a lot older, is a free mod for Half Life 1, but has hardly anyone playing.
Natural Selection 2 was in Beta last I checked, and looked like it had a lot of potential to take the place of the first one.

Would have to agree with the other two posters on Savage series.

Savage was one of the first games to start doing this hybrid mix and in my opinion is the best game out there if you like that type of play. The only thing I will say however is that Savage 1 is more hardcore and has alot of pro players still playing it, and some servers will dislike newbies playing the RTS role, Savage 2 is definitely worth a try though, and it being free is great.
