I have to go on a long trip tomorrow and I wonder if you can recommend me some good DS games. I don't prefer anything special; it just has to be a funny experience for like 10 hours in total. :p I'm not that much into the Zelda saga but I quite like the mario and metroid games.
Maybe you guys can help me out. I'm pretty much lost without entertainment on such trips... :[
Tons of good DS games, the world ends with you is good, professor layton series, new supermario bros, mario and luigi series, final fantasy games, Chrono trigger, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, 999, trauma center, Phoenix wright series.
Regardless of if you're into the genre, the mario RPG games are all really fun. Also the final fantasy ports are pretty good as well. Mario vs donkey kong can effectively waste some time too!
Phoenix Wright series is amazing, but rare. Definitely my favorite titles on the DS though.
Advance wars DS for strategy fans. (Days of Ruin is alright, but not as good as Dual Strike)
Professor Layton series is pretty neat for logic/puzzle, although the story component can get tedious fast.
Pokemon of course!
Elite beat agents is so much fun.
Good mario tites like New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS
There are many others. The DS has a great selection for everybody's preferences. You should also try games that are out of your usual interest zone, you will usually be pleasantly surprised and find hours worth of joy!
The World Ends with you Probably the best square RPG in the last 5 years, combat revolves around pins that you collect lots of customizability although the controls can sometimes be a teensy bit wonky
Elite Beat Agents Check out the Osu! thread on TL its basically the exact same game.
Pokemon If you havent played a pokemon game in god knows how long grab Heartgold or Soulsilver finish those then play Black/White (unless you never played Gold or Silver in which case just skip to B/W)
Mario Games New Super Mario Bros. - Awesome platformer all around Mario 64 DS - A slightly enhanced port of Mario 64 Mario kart DS Mario + Luigi Patners in Time and Bowsers inside story are great fun if your into RPGS
Professor Layton Never played myself but always gets praised

The World Ends With You SMT: Devil Survivor SMT: Strange Journey 999 (Definitely play this if you're not going to play any another games) Professor Layton series (If you're into puzzles) Golden Sun DS (Some complained it was too easy though)
*Jump Ultimate Stars is really fun too (Think of it as Shonen Jump meets Super Smash). It's a Japanese game, but there are translated versions out there...

I got HeartGold in my birthday and I'm wondering why should I play it before getting Black / White. I've just played Pokémon Yellow for the GBC.
This list is pretty good and a fairly varied selection, make sure you go past the top 25 and into the rest of the article because he talks about even more DS games.1up.com DS List
My Personal Best DS games list as of this post
1. The World Ends with You-Has been recommended in this thread several times, and I could not agree more. Personally I think it is possibly the best RPG Square has released since the SNES (And I don't make that statement lightly, I love Square Enix even if their RPG quality has dipped a bit in recent years)
2. Pokemon Black & White-The Best New Pokemon Games since Gold and Silver imo, just great.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks-Its a really fun and charming game like everything in the Zelda series. I'm personally a big fan of the Windwaker-esque graphics. The other Zelda on this DS, Phantom Hourglass, is basically the same (and also quite good) but has a couple of big flaws that they got rid of in Spirit Tracks.
4. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-I'm a big fan of Metroidvania games in general, and this is one of the best games of that style. In my opinion it is the second best Castlevania game (after Symphony of the Night on Playstation). Its only real problem is it has a couple of pointless-tacked on touchscreen stuff that they put in since it came out within the first year of the DS's release, but they are only very minor annoyances. Also having a second screen for the map is so incredibly nice in this style of game
5. Kirby: Canvas Curse-Really the first game that made me think that the DS was really a brilliant concept that could add really fun and innovative gameplay elements. Any summary of its mechanics in this short a post would be doing it a disservice, but essentially it is a 2d platformer that you control by drawing paths on the touchscreen.
I could go on past 5, but for my personal favorites I'll just leave it at that many.
And those are just the games that I have played, there are tons of other great games on the system that I have yet to play (I personally have like 10 games for it up on my shelf that I really want to play and I think would have a decent chance of making that top 5 when I do get around to playing them, and there are plenty of others that I have yet to obtain).
Also it has a number of re-releases, but the only one that I can personally vouch for the quality of the remake/port is Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver which is great. It also has a number of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy remakes that I have heard good things about. Also, it has Chrono Trigger (which is basically just a port from what I've heard) which is arguably THE best JRPG ever, and one of the best games ever of any Genre (I've played the SNES version).
super robot taisen og saga endless frontier, try this rpg probably the only game where I actually played new game+ to the end again lol. oh yeah heres a combo video for u to see the gameplay.
sigh they also released a sequel in japan but nobody has bought it over here...fking altus.
I am actually not a fan of the Zelda games on the DS. (Which is a carefully considered position, given that I have loved every title since playing the original). The controls just don`t do it for me, probably because I`m old fashioned
The world ends with you is seriously the best game i've played in my life. Maybe tied with starcraft. It felt you with that inspirational feeling you get when you read an amazing book, or have that perfect moment. It's great. Not to mention it's hellaz fun.
Also professer layton games are sooo fucking good. Good story, fun puzzles, epic badass characters. AMAZING MUSIC.
But yeah... play the world ends with you. it's great.
Advance Wars Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow Castlevania: Portrait Of Ruin Castlevania: Order Of Ecclesia Chrono Trigger Dragon Quest remakes Dragon Quest 9 Elite Beat Agents Final Fantasy remakes Final Fantasy Tactics Ghost Trick Golden Sun GTA: Chinatown Wars Henry Hatsworth: A Puzzling Adventure Hotel Dusk Inazuma Eleven Infinite Space Kirby Power Paintbrush Lunar Knights Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time Mario Kart DS Megaman ZX Advent Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes New Super Mario Bros. Phoenix Wright Picross DS Pokemon Professor Layton Puzzle Quest Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Space Invaders Extreme Suikoden Tierkreis Tetris DS The World Ends With You Trauma Center: Under the knife Viewtiful Joe - Double Trouble
All Games/Series of Games which are well worth their money. The DS libary is just awesome and there should be a game for everyone (and especially: there should be an rpg for everyone ^^)
This list should begin and end with Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure. I am going to jam this game into the ears of people until 1) the ears of six billion people bleed, or 2) people admit they were fucking assholes for praising Super Meat Boy while complaining Henry Hatsworth was "too hard".
Just finished Okamiden, sequel to the original Okami for PS2/Wii.
It's Capcom's "Legend of Zelda"-ish adventure featuring the awesome and cute son of Amaterasu, Chibiterasu. Soundtrack and art style stand out notoriously there. Check it out for sure!
maaaaaaaaaaaaan why no one has mentioned Plants vs Zombies DS, that shiznit is fo sho 20 hours+ fun, you'll get to the place you are going and you will keep playing it!
It's not the greatest game ever, but it's new and needs the attention. It's a niche game to begin with, releasing it a few days before the 3DS really isn't helping(no release outside NA either). The lead designer and lead programmer of Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure(one of the best DS games) founded a new company called Dreamrift, this is their first game.
It's basically metroidvania with a pet companion that can either fight alonside you or be on the bottom screen, consuming items enemies drop which increases its stats, grants it new abilities and different monster forms that can learn new abilities. There's great sprite work and music. Ellie's moveset is varied and flexible, controls perfectly and is beautifully animated. It's too bad they listened to the terrible feedback the gaming press gave them after Henry Hatsworth; the game is so easy that you're never forced to make use of the great game mechanics available to you. It's not quite NSMB\Kirby\etc. level easy, but not too far off. The game also has excessive backtracking, and unlike Metroid there are very few secrets to uncover in the old areas. After you beat it, there's nothing else to it unlike the DS Castlevania games. Despite all this I recommend it, and I fear it will end up like Shantae.
GET IT! Great story, and thank god, since that is the majority of the game! That might sound negative, but it is so good, you will love it the whole way through!
Megaman Starforce (the whole goddamn series) Final Fantasy III/IV Final Fantasy Revenant Wings Trauma Center (Must get) Phoenix Wright (Must get) Lunar Knights Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (SMT series is awesome)
DS has such a strong library, it is like the era of SNES and PS1 classics. The World Ends With You + the other Square games Altus games Phoenix Wright Professor Layton Advance Wars + Fire Emblem 999
You can never go wrong with a good RPG like Final Fantasy. But I would also suggest the Fire Emblem game for the DS. Don't remember what it was called.
Civilization Revolutionin you like the civilization games. It's got a different feel than the main series on PC, and it's a bit simpler, but it's still great fun.
also, can't go wrong with Chrono Trigger or any of the old FF games.

Already finished it up. This would have been an excellent game under two circumstances: 1) Chomp is simply broken in his current incarnation. He completely breaks any chance the game had at a solid difficulty curve. The final battles towards the end of the game (the ones reminiscent of the Hatsworth death chambers) are absolutely intense if you forego Chomp's special abilities and require you to dish out every ability in Ellie's arsenal. Instead, you spam a couple of Torpedoes and the nightmare is solved. 2) As you mentioned, the Metroidvania formula is wretched. It's the worst use of the Metroidvania formula I have ever seen in a game. It's precisely what you're not supposed to do with the Metroidvania formula. And it's a shame, because everything else checked out well. Control scheme (sans configuring the dash ability to the direction pad) panned out fine, story is what it is. Not going to say I regret the purchase, but it could have been a lot better. Hatsworth stands to me as a gold standard for game design (requiring players to master two completely different genres at the same time), so that's where most of my discouragement arises from.
