Spiral Knights is a free Java-based Dungeon Crawler MMO created by SEGA and Three Rings (creators of Puzzle Pirates). It will becoming out April 4th, 2011.
-We do have a guild whisper Jienny, Molay, Rocksteady or Sated for invite! mod edit, update:
On April 10 2011 04:17 Jienny wrote: After a brief thinking with fellow officers. We decided few ground rules to keep guild active and to fit more members in our 100 capped guild.
First of all, everyone who is invited, must have TL account. Otherwise there wont be invite.
Second, we have new spreadsheet to track activity/tiers in guild. Go there and update your attendance date time to time. There's no way to track activity ingame yet, so we can't keep up who suddenly goes inactive and who is not. Here is the link for the list. http://tinyurl.com/TLSpiralActivity
Third, those who are just lurkers and still recruit status in guild. You guys are in the threat even if you are active.
If anyone is willing to make second TL related community guild to fit rest, please do so. And we can combine if cap is removed.
-Thanks to Hosberk we have a spreadsheet to organize crafting here

You play the game as a Spiral Knight who must delve deep below the surface into a mechanical labyrinth known as The Clockworks. This machine is constantly changing the various worlds it creates so you will often times never replay the same level twice. The game will take you down into the planets depths where your goal is to reach the core. The game feels and plays like a cross between a 2-D Zelda and Gauntlet.

Overall Gameplay
There is very little character progression and your "level" is determined by your gear which is rated by stars. The weapons that will be available for you to choose from are swords, guns, and bombs. Swords and guns are used like you'd expect them to be, which is by aiming with your mouse and right clicking (to shoot or swing your sword). Bombs play closer to a Bomberman type of style where you place a bomb on the ground and a few seconds later it blows up. Other types of gear that you will be equipped with are armor, shields, helmets, and trinkets. If you would like to read up more on the equipment feel free to check out the official wiki page here.
Gates/Elevators
Gates are the entrances to the various stages/levels/dungeons you will be playing and cost energy to enter. Each gate has different depths to them and depending on your gear (Tier 1, Tier 2, etc) you will be restricted to certain depths. There are also crystals that can be collected in each dungeon. You want to cut those down, grab the biggest piece you can, and bring it to the surface. There are inactive gates on the surface, that can only be activated after a certain number of crystals have been deposited. And depending on the amount of minerals put in, the game will generate a certain type of level for it.
Player Versus Player
There is Player Versus Player (PvP) in this game. There are four different rule sets in the game. One for Tier 1 equipment only, one for Tier 2 equipment, one for Tier 3 equipment, and one mode where you can wear whatever gear you want. PvP currently is a free for all, which means you kill anyone and everyone. You get positive points for killing or hurting someone and negative points for dying. Whoever has the most points at the end of the round wins. As far as I know PvP is completely just for fun but there are leaderboards and each mode has a separate leaderboard.
Note: The above user is playing the PvP mode where there is no restriction on equipment. This was also towards the end of testing so everyone had amazing gear.
Guilds
Guilds are in this game, so if people from TeamLiquid are interested in creating one, we can. I wasn't in one during the testing phase so I don't know too much about them, but the devs have stated that they wanted to expand heavily on how the guilds are currently, so I am assuming they are going to be a big part of the game in the near future.
Energy
The microtransaction part of this game comes into play through the Energy System. You only get 100 (Mist) Energy per day and it recharges progressively(24 hours = 100 energy). You also can only store 100 Mist Energy at a time. Energy is important in the game and is used when crafting items, going through dungeons (called Gates/Elevators), and reviving yourself if you die in a level. Crystal Energy can be bought with real life money or with crowns, which is the in game currency. Crown Energy is equivalent to Mist Energy however you can store as much of it as you want. The exchange rate between crowns and crystal energy is completely player driven. It is completely possible to play this game totally free as much as you want with just using crowns. And to help this effort, the developers have stated that they will "likely be introducing vanity items with high crown costs, to "sink" crowns out of the economy, and keep crown demand high. That way, we [the developers] can hopefully keep the exchange rate relatively stable and competitive.".
If you have any interest in this game I suggest you try it out on April 4, 2011. Its a blast to play!
The game looks interesting, but please update your OP with stuff like what the game plays like, it looks like an instanced dungeon crawler with no overworld to speak of, but I can't be sure. Tell us about the classes and level-up system. How is the PvP, if it even exists?
I am currently on a Dungeon Crawl spree, but I might try this later if a TL guild gets started or something.
From what I read on the site, there is no PvP, and it really looks like the Zelda GBA/DS games where you link up with people. I'm definitely gonna try it out on April 4th
There is arenas for Tier 1 equipped people, Tier 2, and Tier 3, and an arena where there are no gear restrictions so Tier 1 can play with Tier 3. That is what this guy is playing.

The developer has experiencemaking java based games in the past with varied degrees of success, and little in the way of stability issues.

The game doesn't have a character leveling system so to speak, instead you level up your gear with "heat" you collect in the dungeons (ergo experience), which gets applied to whatever armor and weapons you have equipped during the run (You can't switch out equipment during). Most of the monsters have a unique fighting pattern and can be difficult to fight 1v1 especially if you don't know the technique, but a lot of it is made laughable in groups when their targeting will make it far easier for someone else to hit them from behind.
PS: I was a little surprised to see this OP, I was tempted to make this thread myself but didn't get around to it.
PPS: Oh yeah, and the style of OOO in the past has been to release games with not all that much in the way of content (Just some good core game-play), and patch it in later, so if it doesn't seem to have much substance now, I wouldn't give up all hope, check back in a couple years or so
I don't know why but that trailer kind of reminded me of Fat Princess... Anyway it should be a pretty fun game and I'll def try it out, thanks for the thread.
yea the pvp looks basically exactly like bomberman, free for all throwing random shit at eachother a million ways to die. I wonder what the story gameplay is like though

I'll definitely try to be around, same name as here of course.
By the way, this thread probably has some more interesting information and feedback from a likely more biased but still generally fairly intelligent community(It has me, right? ).
The main thing you should take from this game is that it is made by Three Rings. This is one of the top flight gaming companies. If you never played PuzzlePirates, which was a fantastic MMO, then you missed out.(or didn't you can still play it)
I played their games for at least seven years now: PuzzlePirates, Whirled, BangHowdy, some of their facebook games. They really do what's best for their customers and employees. It is really inspiring. I've beta or alpha tested most of their games. I even was in the pre-dev version of Spiral Knights when it was just called Project X.
I was so excited. I saw it gets released on the 4th of April, I looked at my clock and it says 4th of April. I then came to the sad realization of... its in American time... Thus ends my sad tale
I just have one thing to say, AWEZOME!!! ;D Did start to play with 3friends, and I must say I never had this fun directly from start in ANY game. Feelts abit like magicka.
I'm "Sabito" In game, if anybody wants to add me. So we need 500 Energy & 1000 Crows to create a guild. Which is about 2.75 if you just purchase it lol...
We need a teamliquid guild going :D That would make it golden.
But I logged onto the game this morning and from what I can tell its actaully quite a lot of fun. It's cool to co-op with people to get what you want. Guild Wars style of gameplay. However I hope the player base in the game remains active for awhile, it be a shame if it were to diminish.
Sorry guys last weeks of school and I gotta try make my B's turn into A's. I'll keep the OP updated though. I added who to pm in game for the guild. Glad you guys are enjoying the game!
So today during work, we had a slow day, so I read every single article in the wiki. It tells me nothing lol. From what I gather, you don't level up your character, you level up your gear, so if you ever want to swap out your gear, does that mean you pretty much start over? Also, is there anywhere that I can compare the statistics for all equipment?
The wiki is almost entirely player maintained, and since it was in a closed preview there weren't very many people around, now that it's live there will likely be some wiki nutcases who pick up the reigns and make something useful out of it. For now you can mostly go by word of mouth and official documentation.

yes. you lvl up your weapons but it doesnt take long for them to get to lvl 10. to progress in the game you will have to craft new items with the materials gathered from dungeon-running. The first set of gear you get got 0 stars. For you to progress to depth 8 (basically deeper down the instances) you need higher gear. first step is 2 star gear. Maximum stars for gear is 5. I really love the system! Played like 5-6 hours today addictive!

If OOO makes a game, you better try it.
No kidding. Puzzle Pirates was some of the most fun I've had gaming. Something about the concept was just genius. Going to start playing this, though the graphics are kind of grating for me. I'm never been much of a Zelda person
Energy consuption rate solely depends on you. If you run dungeons only, its something like 10 energy every 15-30 minutes. If you craft items, they cost 10 to 300 energy. So Basicly 20,000 is more than enough for year or so.
Gears from t1-t3 which can be straight vendored are 150 crown to 35,000 crowns. depending on the tax rate 1600-2300 crowns=100 energy. So 20,000 energy basically covers every need you get ^^.
Edit. Also there is that 100 energy slowly refilling tank that you can use for basic playing. That covers easily 10 runs for day. So thus its free that way. Also party leader can cover the costs of dungeon runs for other players if we need to make deep runs, but that is more needed when doing t3+ stuff.
was wondering, how do i know when to buy some gear? cause i bought / made a few pieces from Recipes and the stats are i guess slightly better, but they are like 7 levels lower than my starting gear... Also, do you have to fully charge bombs everytime to lay one down? kinda sucks .

Game tells you that you need better gear to advance deeper. Thus you'll have to upgrade to next tier at one point. I think higher tier gear all have better stats than leveled lower tier gear.
Also, I will be online after work whole evening. So I can sort out stuffs so that we can handle invites bit better. If there is anyone who wants to promote their self to officer and is active, PM/poke me in game today. Only requirements is to be active and helpful.
Do item sets give bonuses, and if so, are they worth it? I'm deciding between doing mix and match to give optimal coverage, but if set bonuses do a lot, I might stick with a certain set.

Some items give resistances, some give bonus health. And bonuses are quite balanced. Weapons have bit more variation and its more of an question of play style. Also, upgrading armor&helmet is quite important, as those mobs start to hit hard quite fast. Items also get bonuses after leveling, with addition of normal damage&speed&damage absorb addition.
Interesting game. I think I'll mesage one of the guild officers tomorrow. I just wasted half of my energy reviving myself to try and complete one of those challenge things D:
After reading topic in the Spiral Knights forums, we should make effort of putting non-yellow/green minerals to the forming gates. So if you can make deviation from auto-sell button it would be appreciated.
here is bit of rundown what gates we are generating:
The gate inspiring this thread: Slime Fire Fire Slime Fire Fire Upcoming gate: Fire Slime Fire Fire Fire Fire Next upcoming gate: Slime Fire Fire Slime Slime Slime In-progress gate: Fire Slime Beast Freeze ? Fire[predetermined] Next in-progress gate: Slime Fire ? Slime[predetermined] ?
So, it looks we are going to crawl in yellow/green for quite time, but if we start to harvest more blue/purple, situation can improve and we get better and different gates to explore.

If you clear floors instead of going down as fast as you can, you can have a perpetual supply of energy at the cost of 1/4-1/3 of your income.

You can't do dungeons, and you can't craft. You can walk around and buy stuff. You also need 5 energy to log in, so to conserve energy, I would remain idle instead of exiting. Last time I checked, PvP only costed crowns, so you can pvp if you want. It's currently disabled.

There really trying to force money out of this game aren't they? Money to PvP even if it is only crowns that is still annoying. And it costs to log in and out? Thats a bit ridiculous. Does it fully recharge every day though?

Your energy recharges slowly, and it takes 22 hours to recharge 100 energy.
Question for more experienced people, can you reach royal jelly in tier 1 or is it tier 2?

Is there a way i can solo clear levels so i can get all the cash and just take a bit longer i guess? cause right now its just whoever is on top of it when he dies gets the money, and i dont make NEARLY enough to pay for the 1700 for 100 energy, let alone make apparently 6800 per 100 energy.

Clear floors as in making sure you kill everything on the floor and cutting down all the bushes and getting every crown you can out of a floor before continuing down.
As far as i know there is no way to solo, you can start your own group, but it still could put people in it. That said, everyone in the group should get the same number of crowns/heat, no matter who picks it up. I've had no problem getting the crowns to buy enough CE to play indefinitely from running only tier 1, but with the game now released im kinda expecting the cost to increase alot.

It might be a bit tough but you should be able to do all of tier 1 in starting gear, but once you get a 2 star piece or two it should be no problem.
When you're in a group, all money and ember is paid to every member. No need to grab for it. Loot is randomly distributed too. Only thing to worry about it Crystals; that's first come, first serve.
The total heat, crowns, and crystals collected are given to every member
The advantage of soloing is that you get all the loot
The advantage of partying is that you get 4 people carrying crystals rather than just one
Overall, the loot is worth a bit more
You can easily solo tier 1. I just soloed an arena using the starting gear without dying, it took 20 minutes, but the rewards were nice.
I think it's ideal to go in a party of 2 just because a danger room is so much faster with one person kiting, the other dpsing, and also if you accidentally die, other person can resurrect.
Question for more experienced people, can you reach royal jelly in tier 1 or is it tier 2?
Tier 2. And its quite hard also
Loot is distributed so that crowns and heat is divided equally to everyone. So if someone picks up 1 crown. Everyone gets 1 crown. Everything else, like crafting materials, weapons/rare drops are randomly given to 1 member in the group.
Good path to farm energy, thanks for starcraft for info about this. Basically running levels 1-10 of 3rd gate from the left. Can make good amount of materials that everyone basically needs, like swordstones. Some are willing to pay for one 1k-2k~ crowns, depending on the current needs.
I think at the start, doing 1-8 levels which are the first levels, can be farmed with starting gear easily, and there is rare drops which can be sold 7k~ also. This will give you quite lots of energy.
Also if you have too little amount of energy to do run, you can poke me also. I can vouch usually run or two to get those crowns higher so you can make that energy back. Specially if I'm leveling my awesome new T4 weapon .
Alright, I'll start farming third gate from left 2mrw. Is there any way you can choose which path to take in the dungeon or is it random? Also, what does the > and ? mean in the dungeon preview?
eg.

Veteran status is still in brainstorming situation, which means there could be guild vouched weekly runs for example t1 to t2 areas and material benefits. Any suggestions to this would be appreciated. I wish we get guild vault also, my back is too full of weird materials.

New patch coming very soon (5 minutes). Patch notes don't indicate any fixes for lag but we can hope (like with that evil pre-boss).
Special Announcement: Gate themes are experiencing some growing pains as we are getting large influxes of new players who are mining the earlier stratums for minerals, resulting in gates with mostly all the same themes. We are aware of this issue and will be adjusting some stratum themes to prevent gates from having mostly all of the same theme. We feel as though this is best for our growing community. It will become less necessary as things stabilize.
Items - Fixed the Umbra Driver recipe being mistakenly labeled as for the Nova Driver. - Increased the blast radius on the Deconstructor line of bombs.
Levels - Added proper names for themed versions of Deconstruction Zone and Wolver Den. - Updated poison level skybox.
Monsters - Retrode status attacks can now properly do things like light oil on fire. Watch out\!
Graphics - Fix to a bug that was causing Haven and other areas to have improper lighting.
Miscellaneous - Added an option for players to enable joining parties of any language. - Fixed a bug that allowed guilds to exceed 100 members. - Fixed a bug that allowed friends lists to exceed 250 friends. - Players using low-detail graphical settings will now see simplified skyboxes.

There are 4 damage types: normal, piercing, shadow, and elemental.
All monsters are weak vs one of the latter 3, resistant vs one of the latter 3, and strongly resistant vs one of the latter 3. Normal does typical damage regardless. All monsters deal one of the four damage types as well. Having armor with piercing defense means that you will take less dmg from piercing attacks, but it doesn't protect against any other damage types.

Also, from what veterans are saying, is that piercing is not really presented in the game. You can see when you take damage, there's those squares that drop from you which look like you're health bar squares. Color of those squares indicate which damage you are taking.
Really enjoying this game, specially with fellow TLers. I myself am still trying to get the hang of the game, but blocking is for sure a necessary skill to learn ASAP
Edit: Also will be keeping my name up to date on the spreadsheet as far as what recipes I can make. I tend to be a crafting whore so I'll prolly end up sinking most of my crowns into recipes lol
but blocking is for sure a necessary skill to learn ASAP
A good blocking "skill" when using a sword is to hold down your block key (I set mine to right-click with attack as left-click) whilst the attack animation is playing. The shield will interupt the end of the attack animation, getting your shield up faster. Works best after one slash or two slashes, not so well after a full three slash combo. Swipe, block, swipe, block etc. works especially well against mobs who hit slowly like skellies or small wolvers.
I'd have to agree with this. I'm not in the TL guild (Since my friends wanted me to make my own with them: Additional Pylons. Perhaps you have seen us. Not all of them are TLers =/)
But, a lot of them prefer strafing with their guns rather than being upfront with melee like some of us I guess. Strafing is a useful skill toi have.
Against those towers especially Sometimes when you get a bunch of those towers in, I feel like I'm playing an easier version of Touhou or something. Haha.
Most important thing I find is to not spam attack. Guessing a lot of people just think they can click like mad and things'll die, but it actually really messes up block timing.
On another note, where in the world is the recipe for cutters??? Have been searching dungeons and haven dealers and nothing for the past 3 days
im playing and saw someone from the team liquid guild ^^ i don't think any of the officers are online right now but hopefully sometime i can get into the guild.
I tried spiral knights for an hour or so and the game looks cool, but does the gameplay every really evolve/change from the what the starting dungeons are like? I want to like this game, but it seems very boring
this game is awesome there is a certain charm to it and it is really different from other mmos as its actually fun to play, rather than staying in 1 spot grinding to the next level. i like how there is no levelling up, it only depends on the equipment and equipment level. Also, how u craft everything mostly since equips bind to the owner once equipped.

Tier 1 is basically a tutorial. It will become funner later on.
yea the game gets way more difficult lol. you cant just spam attack or you'll die in 2 seconds.
also if you get lag on this game, dont play it. You need smooth gameplay to be able to play effectively, definitely not a mindless grind/hack n slash game.

I have the recipe, you can mail materials to me if im not online and I'll mail them back after its done. Also everyone who ask for invite, please add you're TL account name on the invitation/friend request.
Edit. Actually, we are atm in the guild max cap. So adding TL account name to the invitation is a must to get it. Hopefully they add more slots. Also we can start another guild or something for temporary.
Do you have more than one character on your account? Would make sense to tax people with two or three just to make sure they're not being used to mess up the energy market.
After a brief thinking with fellow officers.

I had same question, how do I become a member (which it looks like guild is full)? I didn't know there was interest on TL for this game until I saw the guild in-game. Character name: wSThinh

You become member by having TL account and being active. If you dont have account or activity, those members will be demoted to back to recruits and eventually replaced with those who are active and have account. So both of you who posted can just whisper me ingame and I will sort out the spots. Eventually we have to start 2nd guild thou.
Edit. Note, if you log back and notice you've been removed from guild. Its nothing personally, just whisper me and we will sort it out. Its all about getting best gaming expirience for everyone
Would be very useful if iNdEMAND adds the direct links to the Spreadsheets to the 1st post, since they are our main way to keep the guild organization in track. Very please >.<
About the Guild cap limit, maybe if there are enough TLers left we can split the main guild into 2 big chunks in order to keep both with constant activity instead of having 1 guild full of people and a 2nd one mainly empty I think we can even the field that way so new players have better chance to get some help and advice from the old ones.
Also, I suggest merging the 2 Spreadsheets into a single one, for the sack of simplicity. At least until we find a better way to keep tracking of the Guild activity.
We don't need a second guild. I'm pretty sure after this upcoming week, there won't even be 100 TLers left playing Spiral Knights. It's usually how games go.
food for though here guys, but is it possible to make 3 Knights and just have your two alt knights collect up energy and then just trade some one in TL the energy?
Example: Main knight runs out of energy, my alt has 100 energy stored. Trade guild mate 100 energy to his main, then he gets on his alt and trades 100 to my main.
or is this something everyone is already doing and i'm just pointing out the obvious.
yea as others have said there is really zero point to make an alt on this game. Just go through one account and its not really "replayable" as there's no classes, you just eventually get everything on your 1 account
I've been trying it out for a couple days now, and I'm really enjoying it. With little time to play, the energy that automatically regens is plenty for me until finals are out of the way. I can see myself sticking with this game for quite a while, if room opens up in the guild, definitely add me :D Ajmcspiffy, same as on here.

yea graveyards are the opposite of treasure vaults, its all luck on what you get. They are annoying levels on purpose that give you hard monsters/no drops, waste of 10 energy everytime you find one lol
Oh god I hate graveyard lol. I'm starting to really enjoy arena levels. They're funner than normal levels, good for drops and heat, and the best part is when you are farming recipes or jellies, you can skip em.

Guild is full, but whisper me or any of the officers in game. We might have chance to fit you in guild.
Phantoms are quite easy to handle, they do two things. Charge attack and 3 hit combo, first you can dodge with ease and can get few hits in them 2nd is bit tricky, but block handling them and you should be fine.
When playing MMOs, I always see time as the primary currency. I have a similar issue in that I have to cut down every single bush to get every single bronze coin lol. I really gotta fix that.

thats normally true, but when you have a finite resource of how much you can play, I tend to rate time lower and quality of gameplay higher

Holy cow this game is fun! I really need to make a mental note not to try boss fights too hard for me because spending energy on resurrects will burn my daily pool in no time-.-
Yeah someone gave me a good tip that its not really a good idea to spend more than 10 energy on a Rez at lower levels. You can just quit and run something else for a larger bonus.
Ok, after slight changes in roster. Here is the current officers to ask invite from: Jienny(EU), Czeja(Asia), Hobserk(EU), Rocksteady(US), Sated(EU) and Decorah(Asia).

A small update was released today to address a few issues and fix some bugs. Also included:
Items
* The Dread Skelly Mask and Suit now correctly require the Sinister Skelly Suit as a prerequisite. * Fixed a couple missing recipe name translations, and added descriptions for a number of bombs and handguns. * Removed Health/Remedy Capsules from subtown vendors. * Added Vitapods to subtown vendors.
Monsters
* Lumbers' attack speed has been decreased. * Lumbers' damage area has been decreased. * Jelly cubes' attack speed has been decreased slightly. * Jelly cubes are slightly more aggressive in Tier 1. * Lichens have had their windup time doubled. * Trojans now wander about when they have no target. * Vanaduke has regained his ability to cast fire snakes. * Royal Jelly's tantrums are now slightly less violent.
UI
* The progress tab in the character panel has been updated to offer more clarity.
This game is hella fun, nice find by the community. Been playing it with a group of my friends, would join the TL guild but yeah. Seen a lot of TL guys walking around there

Is there some sort of road map or webpage with details on the upcoming content? I haven't followed the game more than a couple of days, and I could not find the information in the official forums.
should probably add that to the OP since people keep asking, you DO NOT need to pay a cent to get the full content and playing for free(at the moment) is entirely plausible as energy prices right now are low enough that you can get infinite energy from money in dungeon runs. Paying money on this game is almost like skipping the game basically, for people that dont want to "grind"
I've played roughly 3 hours per day for the past 4 days and not had to buy any energy; at current market prices you get enough straight cash (not counting item drops) from a complete 1st tier dungeon run that you can make a profit by trading for energy (adding to your natural energy regen of 100 per day) and running dungeons.
1st tier dungeons include floors 1-8 which takes ~60 energy and can be handled with starting gear. You gain around 2500 crowns (in-game currency) for a full 1st tier clear whether you're solo or grouped (it's much safer to group up when you first start out).
When the game first launched a week ago 100 energy cost around 2000 crowns. 100 energy currently costs around 3300 crowns. The price for energy will continue to rise as players progress through the game, with an expected final value of up to 10,000 crowns, based on the beta. This is not currency inflation but simply an increase in how energy is valued based on the returns from a typical player's dungeon run.
The expectation then is for new players entering the game at a later date (say, 2 months from now) to be unable to turn a profit from trading crowns for energy. Low end equipment costs will rise as well due to the significant energy component in crafting. In fact, energy costs will rise so much that the vendor prices (7.5k for 2 star equipment; 0 and 1 star equipment should be skipped) will start to become attractive.
This leads to a mandatory start up cost (say, $10 USD for 3500 energy) for new players if they want reasonably fast progression through the early part of the game after the energy market stabilizes. But if you get in now and spend energy wisely (not likely for brand new players, of course) you don't need to spend any money.
There were 2 tutorial videos posted in the new player forums which show roughly the first hour of gameplay, linked below.
farming tier 2 is remarkably cost efficient energy-wise, my energy bar is constantly increasing because i'm expecting prices to go up. time to stockpile now so i can farm more in the future?
anyhow i feel like i've seen the same few levels enough by now. are there new ones? the lack of variation in levels and monsters along with gimped high tier items in lower tiers is starting to really bother me.
I wanna get tier 3 now. Anyone got a 4* shield they can sell for cheap? Idc which one, I'm sticking with my swiftstrike buckler, I just want one to pass the gate.

Just added you to the bottom of the sheet. Everyone should be able to edit those sheets(lets hope no one abuses this effect, or we need to make closed/user restricted sheets). So if you are missing in the list, you can edit yourself there. Officers do cleaning time to time and when we remove someone from the guild.

On the other hand, at that point a large portion of the players will have quit thus keeping the price reasonable, or have started to mass-craft low level items hoping for unique variants (10% chance). Right now for example I would love to sell anyone that wants one a Haze bomb for 500 crowns (production cost ~800, vendor price 3000) as I made 20 of those things that are now just sitting useless in my inventory. I expect the economy to be flooded by 2 and 3 star items in less than a month. At the same time those mass crafters will be wanting to buy massive amounts of the low level ingredients

That's actually a really good point. At that point the materials econ will actually make some sense, and low level runs should be more profitable than they are right now as people can't even guess at prices.

Well, it all depends how fast you wanna go. If you take your time and progress without buying energy, it can be a ride and fun also. Or you can get energy->gear->lowest levels/bosses quite fast. Can't say if its bad or good mechanic, just complicated.
On April 15 2011 00:33 BrTarolg wrote: So whats the verdict?

I like it. With very little time to play, the 100 energy is usually fine for me. It gives more than enough for a run through the first tier, which with current energy prices will usually get you just under what you need to buy another 100 energy using the ingame currency. I haven't payed any real money into this game yet, and even though it moves a bit slower because of that, it still feels like I'm accomplishing things.
I've kinda found that prices for energy depend partly on how busy the servers are. Early morning for me it seems like each run I do can get me enough crowns for another 100 energy from the market place. You do need to spend the energy on more than just running through the clockworks though, like crafting equipment. It's definitely a limiting factor, but it's not too bad. I can usually sustain enough energy to keep me playing a few hours, at which point I would want to go do something else anyway.
^^ What's the conversion rate for crowns into energy? I've been focusing on qualifying for t2 dungeons and pretty much all my crowns/energy are going into this goal. Is it a legitimate strategy to just run dungeons and buy energy until you gather up enough random-ass materials to craft whatever you want?
On April 15 2011 00:33 BrTarolg wrote: So whats the verdict?

You pay 10 energy to run a level. You're given 100 free energy a day. So your playtime/character advancement is limited to that unless you buy energy. It seems like you can do reasonable character advancement without putting any money into the game, at least at the early stages.
Crafting costs energy as well, which is a bit of a drawback as far as I'm concerned. It's marginally more cost effective to craft a piece of t2 because the cost of the recipe, crafting cost, and maybe the cost of one or two hard to get materials is cheaper then the 7500 crowns needed to outright buy something. At this stage in the game, I can't make that much money in 50 energy worth of dungeon runs. However, that means I get to play the game less as I sit around in town and build up energy while logged off instead of actually running dungeons. I crafted the wolvar armor this morning and when I log on tonight I get to craft the gun I have the mats for. Two new pieces of t2 for less then it would take if I just bought them with crowns. However, crafting those two things is 100 energy, and that's all my playtime for the day.
The benefit to this is crafting multiple things at a time means I don't play a few days, and then when I finally do start dungeons, multiple pieces of gear levels up at once (you max out your starter gear fast). I'm not really a fan of games that pay you to not play them, so we'll see how long my interest in this lasts.
You could buy energy and probably deck yourself out from starter gear to t2 in a day, I've never paid money into this microtransactions bullshit so I can't tell you if it's a "good" deal relative to other games with a similar pay structure.
I feel like I have repeated this 5 times in this thread already, bolding it this time.
YOU CAN EASILY PLAY THIS GAME FOR COMPLETELY FREE
I am tier 3 and haven't spent a cent, just manage your resources wisely.

Please tell us how you do it then. Because this game just kind of drops you at it's equivalent to Orgrimar and let's you figure out everything from there.
I'm hearing you can refill your base energy bar for something like 2k crowns, which is incredibly cheap and reasonable at the moment for a starter player. Being able to buy energy that way and build up materials seems a lot more fun then sitting around waiting until I've crafted my gun.
got a couple of questions: with the recipies, is there any point in me getting them if someone else in the guild has them ? For ex i'm told i wanna rush t2 items asap but i can ask guildies to craft them for me?
also secondly, what are arenas? can someone explain this to me?
Last: which dungeons should i be running, so many to choose from, which one do i chooooose? (the front dungeon or the back dungeon?) I guess the gen idea is just run the whole thing solo right?
One of the keys to maximizing your crown return on spent energy is to make sure you run the late floors on a given tier. For example, on tier 1, make sure you finish floors 5-7 and on tier 2 finish floors 14-17. The crown return is 3-4x higher per floor on the later floors of a given tier. If you can solo the entire tier, then that's fine. If you need help you're much better off in a group so you're sure to finish the tier.
The later tier 2 floors (14-17) give about 1200 crown each for 10 energy. That's not counting crafting material drops, which are difficult to turn into cash quickly. It's pretty easy to make back your 3.5k per 100 energy if you consistently make it to floor 18. New players will feel an energy crunch in the first few hours of play because they're not maximizing their returns due to deaths, returning to Haven early due to soloing attempts, wasting energy on danger rooms they can't complete, and other inefficiencies.
Last night, I crafted 2 Heater shields (5star). They are when vendored to merchant 30k crowns. If anyone wants to get one, I can sell it for that 30k price. No unique variants and here is link for the shield: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Heater_Shield

about the crafting, you can have people craft for you T5 if you wish. However, the problem when you get to T3+ is there is a level requirement for the weapon.
Ex: need a level 5 strikerT3 to make a level 1 vilestrikerT4 and a level 10 vile striker to make a level 1 dread fangT5. All item leveling is done through running dungeons and gaining heat.
Problem is once you have leveled an item it is bound to you, so you can't trade your level 5 cutter to some one to make a vile striker.
Choose a 5 star one you like and then build the 2 star piece of it
Each dungeon is comprised of a set of predetermined leveled. The lion gate has the jelly king in it. Most the dungeons wont be much difference, except for the jelly king one
There's no saving mid dungeon, but you can join any party at any time if there is room.

The market kinda died. 2500 for a few and fluctuate back and forth. I made bank early on. 2 days to go from start to tier 3 solo. I had to craft two sets though because getting a full set of 4* recipe is highly unlikely so i went w/ the cobalt for the ez recipe then later finished a couple other 5* sets. I hope they keep up w/ the content.
developed for 4 years, but they took out a lot of content between beta and release. I suppose they want people to get to the end of it before releasing more content
Also you may be better off getting some 3* equipment before 4*. Crafting recipes for things above 2* mostly (maybe all?) require the same item at a lower star. Like crafting a 3* Calibur takes a 2* Calibur along with other ingredients.
Awesome, I found out that TL had a guild because I ran by someone with <Team Liquid> under their name. hahaha! I should have known to come here for more info about sk =) I've barely started playing myself... just running around mashing buttons with some real life friends in our vitasuits and stuff.
New "Upcoming Changes" post from the admins on the Spiral Knights forum + Show Spoiler +
Hi everyone, I'd like to take a moment and let you know what sort of new features to expect in Spiral Knights.
We've had a great launch so far, lots of new players have had a chance to experience the world of Cradle and more are emerging from their pods every day. It's quite exciting! Better yet, response has been very positive from the worlds outside Cradle known as the Internet. We look forward to more of it.
One of the features we've heard loud and clear from our community has been a need for a better means of trading. We recently added the trade channel in chat and today made a change that broadcasts trade chat across all instances of Haven. We do however have something bigger in the works.
While no specific time frame can be stated at this time, please know that we are developing an Auction House where unbound items may be bought and sold. It should make finding the gear, materials and recipes you need much easier.
Speaking of items, you should be seeing some new ones in the very near future.
We will also be expanding upon the story of the Spiral Knights and the lost members of the Alpha Squad.
Beyond that we are hard at work on new worlds for you to explore, filled with new monsters and dangers. The Clockworks are an ever-changing world and we are committed to ensuring that there will always be some pocket of the world left unexplored, some perilous quest in need of a brave knight.
Stay tuned!
The biggest point here is that they want to implement an auction house setting for trade advertisement to happen, I can only assume so that your chat isn't being flooded with offers from all across the board. It makes looking for specific items pretty difficult, so hopefully this will fix that.
Also they are going to be adding more to the story of the knights themselves, including "the lost members of the Alpha Squad". That on top of new world and monster designs, and also the promise of some new items.
That story is something I've been waiting for. I really hope its something quite difficult and exciting, lot of potential at least. Many went afk from game for while when nothing new is introduced.
At least gas prices have stopped rising. Err, I mean crystal energy >.>
Still enjoying it taking it at a more leisurely pace, but I wish more TL'rs were on to jump into random runs and talk about the day's SC2 games/results.

Just give it a few more weeks. Once people start getting out of school there will be more and more on I think. I know that's the case for me at least lol, I love this game but between finals and projects I've got nearly no time to play.
Between April 29th 3pm PDT and May 6th 3pm PDT, purchase energy packages of $9.95 USD or more and receive a special bonus item from the new Rose Regalia costume set for each purchase! The item is selected at random. No one item from the Rose Regalia set is rarer than another. All six items are costume only items. They have no defensive stats or special properties and can only be equipped in the costume slot.
What I looked at game files. Pvp, auction house and tabards(they are quite revealing actually, they add folders for new stuff before release ) are added in there. Hopefully they add those in less than a month or its probably going to be even more quiet than before.
Is there any room in the guild now from inactive people? I've wanted to join for some time but I held off until I got at least some basic game knowledge IGN: Echelon

There is room, and quite lots of room. If you check activity list, you can notice that some been offline for near 3 weeks. So just poke me with mail in game which includes name of your TL account.

Nope, been to p3 with soloing... and now I have concentrated on heating up my argent defender and CE. Its not hard encounter at all, just some bad luck combined with silly attempts of soloing .
Got this game a few days ago, and I must say it's enjoyable.
One question though: When you get higher tiered, can you sustain the account without paying money? I noticed early on it's a little difficult to try and get enough crowns in order to buy energy with them, but does that get easier as you tier up?
Hey looks like the guild has officially died. Anyway, if anyone still considers coming back here is a summary of what has happened during the last 30 days.
--auction house-- First they started by adding the long awaited auction house. While it comes with a needlessly high 10% sale tax, it has made trading both easier and more profitable.
--crafting nerfs-- At the same time however they changed crafting so that 4* and 5* will now be bound if they are based on a bound item (95% require such an item). At the same time crafting costs where shifted to cost less crowns, and a lot more ce. Crafting a 5* item now costs 800ce
--new boss dungeon-- A new T1 dungeon was added featuring a nice looking wolf thing and new reward items. You might want to consider coming back just to check out the boss, but it is obviously easy enough with high end equipment
--steam release-- Just yesterday the game was released as part of steam's new free game programm. An influx of fresh blood is to be expected
Saw this was released on steam and downloaded it today, went through to haven and went through one dungeon so far... Seems pretty fun but it's confusing trying to work out how to upgrade weapons etc...
Is there any sort of beginner guide to this? I'm acquiring 2* items and I'm wondering if it's better to go for the recipe chain sort of items or just random pieces as well. If the recipe chains are the only good 5* items it's pretty obvious to go for them, but if there's other options why bother ^_^
On a different note, does anyone else get massive lag spikes? I downlaoded the game from Stream a couple days ago and it would spike every 3 seconds. I am playing from the US east coast.
Pretty sure there aren't any 5* items left that can be crafted without a chain any more
Those lag spikes can sometimes be solved by restarting the game. There used to be a bug with ice levels that caused those spikes and they didn't go away even after the level ended, but i haven't been hit by that in a while. That said, the game does lag a bit more since all the new players arrived

I had that too and switching to full screen fixed it.
I'm playing under the name Heshihobo. I buddied everybody mentioned in the post because I couldn't figure out how to whisper people ^_^ I killed that snorlax thing earlier today as well. That is an annoying fight to solo...
Added you. If anyone else is intrested in reviving the clan, message me (/t Hobserk) in game and I'll add you. As I said the clan is more or less dead right now though
Perhaps I'll consider coming back based on the changes listed above. I was having a rough time playing for whatever reason, it might be worth a second look.
Now that this on steam games, doesn't make it any more appealing other then the fresh blood, but we'll see. For newer players, I have most of the t1 and t2 recipes, so if you see me online feel free to hit me up if you need something made. You'll need mats though XD
I started this game when it showed up on Steam, but got bored quite quickly. The game literally has everyone doing the same thing (hack n slash) and there's no choice of skills/classes which I have gotten used to having from other MMOs..
Well, after coming back, I've made about 400,000 crowns just selling my old stuffs at AH... and crown ce trade is at 3,3k right now so its really profitable.
need some buddys/guild. started last week for the tf2 hat and kinda got hooked. currently have all 2star eq working towards a tempered calibur. name: ariek
oh and is it worth it to upgrade normal eq? or should i try to get some stuff with a mild mod on it? mind that i just started and am kinda poor ~

Me and a friend are just running from depth 1-7 (basically all of tier 1) and getting about 4k crowns purely from drops every time, with 100 energy currently selling at 3.5k. So yeah, it's sustainable.
Edit: You have to hang in there for the entire ride though, the last two depths easily give 80% of the gold total. If you really need the gold you can sell drops you get on the runs at the auction house. It's about 200-500 per shard, most of the time.
Well if you do get a solid set of 3* gear, I would highly highly recommending doing the Jelly King run. Shit, I've never even killed him and I make on average 200-300CE profit each time, even after accounting for the energy spent on elevators. I've managed to save up almost 3000CE just from doing those runs.
Actually, until I discovered this I thought that the makers of the game almost made it a requirement to pay if you wanted the full game experience.
Protip: at clockwork junctions ALWAYS buy the popular recipes. It's the easiest way to make money. On stuff like a wolver coat recipe, you will make minimum 2k profit.
Edit: ugh crowns are inflating like crazy atm...went from 3500CR:100CE to 4000CR:100CE. I seriously hope this doesn't persist
I just ran through my first bit of tier 2 this morning...It's a lot more challenging although most of my gear is no longer level 10 so that may have something to do with it
Is it even worth getting 3 star gear? I was just gonna jump straight to 4 star ^_^

Afaik, you cannot do that. As of a recent patch, 4* gear cannot be resold unless it was prepatch, since crafting it requires the 3* gear to be level 5+. In other words, any 4* gear you buy off the auction house will be going for insanely high prices. For example, the guy a few posts up is sell a vile striker for 240k, which is like 3x the price is takes to make at least, even if you choose a good UV item to craft up with.
My personal recommendation is to buy a good UV 1* or 2* weapon off of the auction house and then use it to craft up to however high you want to go. Trying to make your own UVs is a huge pain, as well as being expensive. With this method, you are guaranteed a UV and you can take it to as high of a level as you want.
Well that sucks. I got a Calibur and an Autogun as my weapons right now ^_^ Gonna get a blaster or something because being locked into place while you use your gun is suicidal half the time. I'm assuming these weapons are slightly weaker though since you can get all the recipes from some chap in town. I might try to find something a bit more rare first ^_^ Regardless I probably can only afford to upgrade 1 or 2 items right now so it's all pointless.
Anyone who is in need of guild invite, mail me or Hobserk ingame. Guild is bit inactive due most players starting long time ago and content going really fast(specially at start), but some of us are making slight comeback.

Jelly runs are tier 2 in game. So technically you need 2* to do them. Two days ago I did it with 3 other with 2* gear and myself with full 5*s, but we died quite bit (due to my lag and failure) and it was not the easiest thing to do.
Personally I would prefer to do it with 3* geared people at least(for boss, not for the levels).
It's a shame that the Jelly tokens can be used to buy 3 star gear. You'd think that they'd be 4 star since that's what you need to unlock tier 3 ^_^ Failed miserably trying to kill the jelly with a couple random groups. He's pretty much impossible for 2* people
Oh god, with energy prices as high as they are I might actually spend another $5 on this game. Considering that I already spent 40 hours playing, it's not like it isn't worth it. To buy is like 4100:100

Ok. I'm much better than 3*, so why don't you send my a friend request in game. It's summertime so I'll be on a lot. My ID: Fontong. I'm in some random guild right now, but I can just leave and join TL.
If you send me a friend request to get invited include at least some kind of text saying you want to join the guild. When I'm in town i usually get friend requests from random people just because of my shiney shield (lol)

def check it out. its free and only a 300mb download. if you like working towards some gear via grinding, trading and crafting it can be quite addicting ~
I made a bunch doing a tier 1 run in the latest gate, the one with the sun picture. Although I solo'd it with 3-4* gear and was 1-2 hitting everything save for the monsters in the danger room.
love to play ign : Airdraken currently trying to make cobalt gear and just made my firotech alchemer. pretty fun although i dont understand how to play efficiently and used crystals well to make levels.
soloed that massive cat when i played. cant remember his name though snorbolax or smth?
I've been playing this a bit to kill time when downloading new tv shows and stuff, pretty relaxing. I like some of the "four swords-esque" gameplay. Pretty awesome for free!
Well I'm thoroughly disappointed with the market in the game and will probably quit playing. Energy prices increase everyday while material prices go down. It's barely profitable to run Royal Jelly anymore, let alone make enough crowns to get into tier 3. Unless some major overhaul happens very soon I don't think it's worth playing anymore because energy will keep rising in price and materials will keep dropping

I only just started, but I'm confused.
Surely I cannot be in the minority if I play this for the combat -- nicer items are cool, but I don't really sweat it -- instead of actually trying to make profit in-game?
Or are you complaining because it's too hard to play for free now, since you can't make enough crowns to pay for energy? (That's a valid complaint, I just wouldn't know since I'm still new)

Sadly that market promotes that so called darkside of this game, which is that it basicly is micro payment game afterall. I love the combat style on it, and it would work great, but just now when I logged. My latency of game has dropped to way over red and its unplayable totally.
So I guess its time for me to take a break and see if they can fix that problem at all. I still will handle guild stuffs reguraly, just send mail me ingame or PM here at TL.

I don't see why energy prices won't continue to rise and if they continue to rise I won't be able to play for free unless I merchant on the auction house ^_^ Also, you need (lots of) money to upgrade your equipment due to the nature of crafting. The combat is fun, but I don't want to run the same thing over and over and over again (Royal Jelly). Unlocking tier 3 and soloing the boss there would be entertaining to me and fun, but the way the game is going I don't see that as a possibility.
You could theoretically always play for free since you naturally regain mist energy over time, but I have no interest in being capped at spending 30 minutes on the game each day or however long it takes me to run through tier 2.
Energy prices stopped rising at ~5,3k. I never thought I'd see the day.
I guess it is going to fall again (I sincerely hope :S) after the surge of players from Steam. Lots of people probably tried it out and then got bored and just stopped playing.
I just bought and crafted my Angelic Helm and bought the Cold Iron Carver receipe and mats for about 12k CR :S Ouch, I need to wait for my ME to fill up so I can grind some more CR to selfsustain again, which is perfectly possible imo, if you keep at it.
self sustaining is way harder now with the higher ce price. but by focusing on the bosses in t1&2 you should slowly be able work your way to t3. think snarbolax was kinda neutral and jk should be profitable even considering the energy cost of a full run.
at t3 its all about lucky mat drops (flame souls, shadow steel etc all sell for around 10k) and recipe reselling ( 5-15k profit) from my expirience. also did firestorm citadel till the boss once now and while the money wasnt that great the mats are good and its actually huge fun. really hope they keep adding stuff fast for that game. it sure is possible to create really cool and fun levels in that engine.
3 tips to get more efficient money wise: 1. somewhat learn the item market. if you know the value of things you can often make great deals in the ah and get . 2. crafting is your friend. popular items like wolver armor usually give u a slight profit on the mats/energy spend with the chance to get rich with a lucky uv 3. add evryone that doesnt suck. the early parts of a tier are always craptastic heat/money/dropwise. a big friendslist makes it possible to skip those often which saves tons of energy.
/btw i can borrow some energy if needed and help starters with some 1/2 star gear or a free "steamtank".
If you see me online, don't hesitate to ask for help. I can help you get to t2 or near it even. Market can be quite brutal at the start, but Jelly King runs are good way(probably best way) to heat up your gear to get next tier.
Also, If this game stops lagging for me, anyone willing to go for some Vanaduke kills, please send PM. Have done those Vanaduke levels about 10 times, and soloing boss seems near impossible due nature of last phase. (need preferably least 2 to trow those water balloons at flames so it wont overwhelm)
would love to try the boss. current gear: grey owlite (medium shadow uv) vog cub coat (low shadow uv) ashtail cap (medium shadow uv) ascended/faust + either antigua or cryo driver
plan to upgrade to skolver cap so i have some piercing some shadow, lotsa elemental/normal def + attack speed/power medium. also silversix cause i heard its good ~~

good enough for boss? plan sounds good?
Well, if you can solo to boss. Its good enough in my opinion. Just learning the boss fully can take run or two. Boss medicine is good and fast gun, lots of fire resistance and normal/elemental resistance.
Will log today later to test if I can run the game well enough to not lag.
Hi -- just started SK, its a pretty chill game but I'm having a hell of a time trying to farm crowns and stuff to buy energy and gear.. I managed to get a 2 star sword and armor but if anyone can toss me any junk that they don't need, or if another beginner wants to do some random runs hit me up on 'scotchmist'. Cheers~
New patch got released today with a new T2 boss dungeon that is really worth checking out. Comes with a set of new weapons and armors for the new boss tokens too. Patch also includes some weapon balance changes including faster charging guns.
In other news energy prices are back at 6k and probably on their way back to pre-steam prices, though the new recipes might slow that down a bit
I haven't added any of the new (maybe 15) members to the activity sheet as keeping that one up to date wasn't necessary after the mass exodus. If you want to join leave me a message in game or post your nick here. I'm not really playing anymore either, but you'll still find the one or other liquid member online most of the time.
New update, you now have the ability to unbind a weapon at cost per energy depending on what star the weapon is and you now can "gamble" for three random UV's on an item for a fee of 375k crowns. These updates should lower energy costs as energy has already dropped from 7k to 5.1k in a matter of hours, now making it easier to profit from runs and not pay for energy.

it's only going to drop for this little bit because people probably bought some ce or is cashing out their ce for crowns to roll uv's. But in the long run it takes out more ce from the econ so i expect ce to shoot back up in a week maybe even higher just due to more things ppl can put ce into.
