its definitely fun, and worth the money. There are a number of differences compared to the previous ones but i wouldn't go so far as to say it feels like "halo with jetpacks".

As a Halo 1/2/3 player who played in MLGs etc and who hasnt played Tribes I can vouch it is not Halo with jump packs the guns and movement are way different. Halo is much more about controlling weapon spawns , and 4v4, where this is a much more larger battle with smaller battles happening, and there are no weapon spawns, its a class based game..i'd compare it more to like Quake + TF2? The weapons are far from feeling like Halo series, nothing like the BR/DMR, the movement, the spinfusor etc are all way different.

However, maybe I can see why you think that maybe they are trying to attend to these kinds of players, since I felt pretty at home after a few hours of playing, and while Im not good at all yet, I'm really happy with it so far and having lots of fun. Of course it's beta so its not really all smoothed out yet, but the gameplay is fun, and I'd like to play with some other people instead of just by myself, feel like that would greatly improve experience.

If your on the border about purchasing preorder, just wait for game to come out, and you can play for free to try it out. There are like 40 other games coming out this month etc, so I mean if your not in a hurry and dont like where the games at right now just dont pay for it.

The game also has quite some grinding involved in its current state, but this isnt that different from LOL so I think its F2P model is pretty similar to LOL.

after watching TotalBiscuits mailbox today I signed up for beta, I played Tribes 2 casually so I'm expecting to really enjoy this, I loved the gliding mechanics and vehicles
I'll bite this hand that feeds me, and take it for my own!

TB's video doesn't really do it justice. I dunno if the pub servers I play on are overskilled compared to this, but seeing sub 20 second caps is not rare, and full on AA midairs are common enough. One of the cool things is you get a medal and a little extra score for a midair, unfortunately they don't keep persistent stats, but oh well.

It is a really, really fun game. been playing a few hours every day and only enjoying it more. I just wish it were easier to get your hands on more classes, I bought the game and that money only gets you 4 classes +1 you get for free.

Expecting super competitive play after a couple of days of beta is fairly unrealistic. We were not all superl33thardxcore Tribes players.

Honestly unless they make some major, MAJOR changes to physics as well as modifications to the loadouts I don't expect there to be any competitive scene. Its an ok pub game, its fun, but it certainly isn't tribes. Theres far too much ground play, a lack of base play for the most part (it takes one disc to kill a deployed turret, you don't lose loadouts when the gens go down. Base play is part of what characterized tribes, exception being the LT mod to T1 and cluster for T2 both of which were considered abominations by many players) massive amounts of ground hugging due to weak jets, (I really doubt they'll change this a lot since jets are part of what makes tribes "hard" apparently) and then theres all the hitscan/near hitscan weapons, hopefully the next patch will help with these. Thats not to say it isn't fun, I just don't see the hardcore tribers who still play comp to this day enjoying it, nor do I see a large competitive scene rising up. It isn't tribes but I guess the more casual audience can enjoy it. What is it? Who the hell knows.

T:A is what you'd get if you'd try to remake Tribes based solely on the verbal description provided by a drunk Dave Georgeson.

Well no, it is Tribes. Tribes isn't defined by those things anymore than SC2 isn't Starcraft because it has auto-mine. There are definitely issues they need to look at but anyone who actually wants Tribes 2 should probably just stick to playing that. Ascend will make changes that some people won't like, that's inevitable, but it doesn't mean it's not a good game in it's own right.

Fact of the matter is there hasn't been a good PC multiplayer shooter for ages, T:A for the most part gets it right and is getting better every patch. Condemning it just because it doesn't appease what's left of the small Tribes community isn't going to help anyone.

Not all the tribes community is hating on TA, I'd like a few small changes and I think it'll be fine.

Also I got a nice mid air on TB that'll be going into my video for later this week :p

It's actually not that bad...I went into it expecting some God-awful abomination, but was pleasantly surprised. Then again, I haven't played since the original S:T. The only real complaint I have is that some weapons feel...awkward. I'm not saying that a battle rifle doesn't take any skill, but it feels *so* incredibly out of place. Disk duels are fun, mortars are still mortars, and skiing is fairly enjoyable. Think I might end up playing this a lot once it's polished a bit more...Actually ended up actually buying all the classes & making talent review videos, so that folks can pick & choose what they wanna play. Thought I'd regret it, but nah...pretty fun overall.

Agreed, except on the mortars. Mortars definitely need a wider range, explode on hit, and more damage imo.

I played Tribes 2 a fair amount when I was like 11 or 12, and had a lot of fun with it then, although I was never competitive or very good at the game. Nonetheless, I'm enjoying Tribes: Ascend a lot. I wish jets were more powerful, that there were no speed caps, that people were in the air more often, etc., but its not like they're unwilling to change those things. Its certainly not perfect, and its certainly not the same as Tribes 2, but its a fun game and the developers seem to be actively trying to make it better. That's all I can really ask for.

How about hating on it for anti-competitive business model?

Anyways it might still be good, but you gotta realize it's been so long since there was a Tribes game and people are really hankering for that. To me Tribes central theme is 3d momentum (so much of the game is about building, maintaining, adjusting, and predicting momentum to do everything from cap, to land a disc, to flying vehicles). If Tribes doesn't capture that it could still be a fun shooter, but it'd be a shooter not a game about momentum like Tribes always felt like. That's kinda why I liked Tribes over other games, it never felt as much about quick aiming as much as placing the right shot and keeping up the right momentum.

I mean lets be honest, a 1/2 assed Tribes might be a big let down, but it's still probably better than most other FPS games for that 1/2 part of Tribes it does get in there.

So I'm just gonna throw this out there - if we could get a bunch of TL'ers on vent & rock up some team games, I think it'd be pretty much amazing. PM me if you'd be interested (and don't mind being potentially recorded on Youtube)!

You can add me, i'm BrTarolg on there

I'm always playing the EU servers

Atm the skill level of the games are REALLY low and theres tons of imbalance around so its ultra easy to rack up 20+ kills every game with some sick K/d ratios

---

A few "imbalance" tips for those who are going to buy tribes so you have an idea of what you need to purchase:

Ranger: hitscan SMG LOL. Ok, it's not really that bad, but hitscan weapons in a tribes game? trolololol

Pathfinder vs jumper: both have a discgun like weapon and 800 health and a shotgun, except the jumper has the best offhand ability in the game... UWAT

Infiltrator, scrambler, brute : havn't really played. Nobody really plays these guys. Afaik, the juggernaught is more popular than the brute cause of the fusion mortar which oneshots everything except heavies. Light classes in general arn't too good (imho) because they get oneshotted by everything and few of them have a decent loadout

Sniper: lol more hitscan weapons in tribes? Coming from someone who played snipercon a ton in GA and having constant aimbot accusations, this is totally stupid
2shot all lights, 3 shot all mediums, anywhere on the map, any time, gg. Unlike the laser rifle doesn't use all your energy and have one shot only, nono its ok you get FIVE shots in a clip

Doombringer: lolwat? chain gun is pretty mediocre since heavies are so freaking slow, homing missiles suck vs anyone decent and are a distraction at best. Offhand is totally hilarious, people run into it all the time. Won't be long before people l2orbital the flag before capping obviously

Juggernaught: cool loadout, sucks that jetpacks are so weak in this game. Moving anywhere is an absolute chore - relegates you to standing in one place and hoping to engage in some close combat i.e something that never happens vs decent players

Raider: prob as i said, my fav class (though i'm playing sniper a lot more atm simply because hitscan weapons are OP), 5 nades per clip is basically a lot stronger than all the other mortar/nade class weapons (like the fusion mortar and the ranger grenade), and the SMG has 100% accuracy though it's not hitscan
Offhand is shield which is obviously, very useful, and defo one of the better offhands

Engy: Kind of a gimmick atm, since generators are pretty bleh. Having said that, if for some reason you are running a doombringer + techies then you HAVE to kill the defenses before running in. Vs bad teams its hilarious to rack up generator and flag kills without doing shit though
Still, orbital> this class

----

Basically, l2aim, play sniper, rack up free kills all game because you can hitscan people from anywhere in the map all the time without cooldown

@luckbox: the sniper rifle is actually the only hitscan weapon in the game atm. All other weapons have projectiles, albeit extremely fast ones. Of those, the pistols and shotguns are the fastest and the ranger AR and chaingun are slowest.

Sniper is very good but also incredibly hard to learn. If you stand still and snipe you get killed pretty quick on good servers since it's easy to see where the shots are coming from for any enemy, and you get a mortar/tank/shrike round dropped on you right fast. Consistently landing shots on a moving target while moving/skiing yourself is incredibly tricky. The secondary weapon is also probably the hardest weapon to hit things with in the game atm (since it has no splash, the bolt launcher and arx might be harder to score direct hits with, but at least they reward near misses). On the upside it does ridiculous damage as well. I'd say the sentinel is a super rewarding class for people with incredible aim, but it's frustrating as hell when you miss 95% of your shots (like I did when I started playing it ). Again, I play on servers usually with a population of 8 per side, and the only people who aren't skiing around at or around 100km are HO, HoF, base rapers and tanks. I doubt you'd feel the class is so imba if you played in that environment.

also to be a technical bastard: Offhand = grenade/mine. Shield/Jump etc is your pack.

The ranger SMG is hitscan also

And having hitscan guns in this game is ultra dumb

Jumping and shooting is an easy enough to acquire skill, and with current map design you can pretty much cover most of the entire map. You can single handedly make it impossible to escape with a flag on a light character because it only takes 2 shots to kill them

You're totally out of range of any grenade/mortar type weapon in the game with the sniper rifle anyway, since snipers effective range is essentially the entire map if your aim is halfway decent

Discguns are easy enough to dodge also if you're going to be shot at from long range for obvious reasons

Sniper's main role is just to shoot down flag cappers, and it's fantastically good at doing that, and way too good at it
