Why would anyone ever actually WANT to cast Ball Lightning. I just learned it for the first time. I cast it in AN OPEN SPACE. Nearest wall is maybe 5 squares away. 3 balls spawn. They float over to, and blow up on a wall. The AOE fills my screen and 1-shots me. I WAS SO HAPPY JUST TO CAST IT ONCE. RAAAGGGEEE

Edit: _a - the ring "Gess" {+Rage +Inv rElec rF++ rC+ MR Dam+4} Can I put this on without chei getting angry at me, as long as I don't activate the beserk? Probably the right way to find an exit: if the floor you are on seems not bad, go find the pan lord minivault if there is one, and check it for an exit. If the floor you are on is difficult or if you have not seen an exit in the vault, go to another pan level. Repeat until you get out. Escaping is not that bad most of the time, and 32 floors of just searching for an exit is definitely unusual. And yes you can wear that ring (and that is one hell of a ring). And yeah, MrBitter, don't ever use conjure ball lightning unless you have insulation, unless you want to die (having good AC in addition is also good). I've never found it particularly useful myself since it's tremendously unreliable, but it does a lot of damage.

RAAAGGGEEE I love that stuff. Magic feels powerful and dangerous in this game. Remember the first time you destroyed your Baldur's Gate party with a poorly aimed fireball? It's like this ALL THE TIME in this game. Fuck modern games and their idiotproof singletarget shitmagic. [/offtopic]

I really love playing wizards in this game, but picking up your second spell book is such a chore. I just died on Lair:4 (after 10 levels of the main dungeon) with **** Vehumet piety, and nothing but mephitic, imps, and some wands to wave at the hydras that were chasing me. Next game I start a deathknight and pick up a necronomicon on D:2. f...m...l....

My NaGl ended in failure, got a bit greedy trying to kill dispater while I was waiting for tele to kick in, then my emergency controlled blink miscast and blew me up. Was my first attempt at a 15 runer, and I'm pretty happy with how I did. Chei + contstriction is so incredibly strong, I'm pretty sure I dropped mennas in 4 squeezes. If you want to play a character that can take down someone in a straight fight, this one is really powerful. Morgue is here, if anyone's interested.

That said you can clear lair with just the starting wizard book. Hydras are not a problem unless you are NaWz: you can run away and use different steps (and you even have blink for opening up a gap if you need it). Conjure flame is also very good for killing them. You can also do more of the dungeon if you get stuck somewhere, unless you run out of dungeon.

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/eeviac/morgue-eeviac-20120219-234049.txt when your HESk finds randart +3 leather armour {rF+, Int+3, Dam+5} on D:6, you know you're in for a good round. I worshipped Oka until he gifted boots of running (best item in the game IMO), then immediately dropped him for TSO, where I piety scummed Crypt and Abyss until I got a eudemon blade, then dropped TSO for Jiyva. Jiyva is an awesome god... as long as you know how his stat shuffling works. He took me from 40 int down to 22 haha. It wasn't that big of a deal though, Tornado was only a panic button thing, I only cast it maybe ~10 times the whole game. I ninjad every endgame rune except for Tartarus. The only real worry I had was not finding a book of the warp (cblink, phase shift) until several levels into Pan. Ninjaing runes is significantly more difficult without Cblink. My biggest blunder was rushing into a bazaar on Snake:5, then immediately leaving through an adjacent portal. I have no idea what that bazaar was selling. I am really dumb sometimes ![]() On February 20 2012 07:47 MrBitter wrote: Blargh. I really love playing wizards in this game, but picking up your second spell book is such a chore. im up against an orc warrior on lvl 8. He hits me one time and does 12 dmg. I have 24 hp left. I think I can take one more turn of straight up fight, so I sock him with a magic missle at close range in hopes that it might kill him since he has very low life. He hits me for 25 and I die. so hard to get a wizard going..... have to not take a single hit or else you die. Very different from a HOPR where you are constantly in their face throwin bows

Also conjure flame is really good at letting you not get hit. It's like meph but more reliable and lasts longer but doesn't work against ranged enemies.

staying alive is relatively easy with blink/mephetic/flame/imp, but should I just avoid them? I hate doing that because they usually are a great source of loot and exp. Should I flood them with imps? maybe i'm playing too offensively?

Also you can skip most of the dungeon pre-lair and as long as you don't die in lair you will finish up lair and hardly notice the xp loss from not killing stuff. Enemy xp goes up pretty fast.

Here are the rules again: + Show Spoiler + Rules 1. Have one drink every time you move down a floor (unless you are stair dancing monsters). This applies to the various branches as well. 2. Have one drink every time you kill a unique or a ghost. 3. Have one drink every time you level up. Two drinks if it is a stat boosting level (every third level) 4. Have one drink if you enter to the Abyss. (banished or by free will) 5. Have one drink if you leave the Abyss. 6. Have one drink if you acquire a religion. (For builds that start with a god, take a drink at the start before moving) 8. Have two drinks when you switch religions. 9. Have two drinks when you collect a rune 10. If you fall down a shaft, have one drink for every level descended. (These drinks are separate from rule #1). 11. Finish your drink if you die. Going to start out as a HEWi. If I fail too often, I may switch back to HOPr just for the sake of progress. Wish me luck ^^ edit: webtiles is so hard without that inventory menu underneath the map ![]()

One question I have, is it common for an enemy to attack you twice in a single turn? I always get messages like "your attack missed. jackal's attack missed. jackal's attack hit you" when I am only fighting one jackal. But then sometimes it does only one attack, and sometimes it doesn't attack at all. Are the fights supposed to be this random? And do many monsters attack more than once in one turn? Sorry, these are probably nooby questions, but I didn't find the wiki to be too much help with them so I thought I'd ask you guys.

There is a lot of randomness in the game, especially if you rely on EV for defense, yes.

On February 22 2012 13:53 crate wrote: Jackals are faster than you are, so sometimes they will get two turns in the time you get one. This is more often true if you are using a slow weapon and are not very skilled (if you started with a hand axe or mace especially, or if you picked up some slower weapon), in which case one attack may take you more than 1.0 game turns. Some enemies have multiple attacks per turn also even if they are the same speed as you or slower. In general it's not particularly important to know how many attacks a given monster has, with the most notable exception being hydras (but it's pretty obvious in that case how many attacks a hydra has: one per head). There is a lot of randomness in the game, especially if you rely on EV for defense, yes. Ah thank you. I wasn't really sure how attack speed had an effect on a turn-based game, but this makes sense!

show_gold_turns = true show_game_turns = true now the turn counter will display exactly how long each of your actions takes.

I stumbled on an early kiku altar, so I took it on d:2. Between skeleton/imp spam, i was able to clear everything with relatively little trouble. Upgraded to raise dead and forgot raise skeleton when I had enough mana to support the change. Found a nice smoking staff of poison, which proved to be the best item I would find all game. Allowed me to meph cloud myself if I got swarmed (and I did, many times). Figured out how to build abominations on Lair 1, so I quickly built 8 of them (the optimal number for moving up and down stairs because you have a box formation). Was easy enough with the copious amounts of bodies in Lair and by using the Kiku deliver corpse ability. Between them tanking, me casting summon flame/darts/meph, I rolled lair. I was feeling strong, so I made a move to the Swamps. I had learned Agonize (a very powerful spell, btw) which helped immensely with dragons/hydras and I had that staff of poison, so I figured I could snag the rune fairly quickly as long as I didn't dilly dally around. My plan went well. I didn't lose a single abom until I ran into the 5 dragons/3 hydras/2 alligators gaurding the rune. We had a bloody battle, I lost 4 aboms, but had been resurrecting everything after they died so I had some powerful zombies now. I swiped the rune and was on my way out when I ran into some unique that cast a spell I had never seen before. It was some illusion based thing that changed all the sprites, so I couldn't tell what was what. She was also backed up by a ton of green jellies, who combined into super powerful little shits during all the confusion and wiped out everything. With no followers with me and all the sprites still mixed up, I fled. Unfortunately, I drug a super jelly up with me. I ran from it, but got pushed into a pack of vamp mosquitoes. They sucked all my blood out and I became a mindless kiku slave. Looking back now, I think I should have just done more dungeon. I was only down to D:10, I could have probably gone to 17-18 before facing any real threat. This was the furthest I have ever gone with a wizard and I really enjoyed myself. The game felt so much more tactical and thought provoking. I know high elves dont make the best necros, but I never found a spell stronger than darts so I had to go the summoning route for my damage. fun times ![]() (also, is it just me or does .10 feel way harder?)
