I use the VI keys (hjklyubn) for movement. I started Crawl on a laptop, and the directions make enough sense (same order as arrows in DDR, lol) and it keeps my hand close to other commands. But use whichever control scheme you're comfortable with, since it doesn't make a difference in gameplay (same as tiles vs console is preference if you're playing locally).
There are a few ways to go for a character who's not going to physically attack anything. Personally I just don't like Sif Muna as a god so I tend to lean toward Vehumet or Kiku for casters (plus Necromancy is overall the most flexible single spell school now that Enchantments is broken up). That said pure casters tend to be pretty frustrating--you'll end up with low HP and likely low EV also since you won't be training Fighting much and will train Dodging less than characters who fight stuff, so stuff like Yaktaurs has the potential to just kill you outright if you get unlucky. I suppose the new experience system may let you be less of a wet bag defensively now that you can funnel experience into skills you're using less though.
I personally like hybrid characters the most though so other than a few stabs at a Conjuror-type I don't bother with pure spellcasters any more. Partly it's that I find SETm or MfTm the easiest role/race combinations in the game other than maybe SpEn (basically the entire starting spellbook for Tm is crazy powerful, and Evaporate is my vote for the single most overpowered spell in the game) and partly I find it a lot of fun regardless.

This game sounds crazy hard. Maybe its because im more stoned than a lawn gnome, but damn wtf? It would take me years to figure out whats going on here.
|
Dude, just load it up and tumble around in the dungeon for a while. You'll pick it up fairly quickly. Just live fast, die young and try out some stuff.
|
I'm having a hard time deciding when to stop training certain skills. I know every class is different, but is there a general guideline I can follow? Like do melee classes want to keep dodge on forever, and ranged classes should turn it off immediately? Is it best to stick to one weapon type?
|
Every weapon has a minimum delay that's achieved at a certain skill level. The minimum delay is half its base delay. Every 2 ranks in a weapon skill decreases delay by one. So for a sabre with base delay 12, you can stop training short blades at 14 skill, as you will have reached min delay and more skill won't do much for you.
Imo, dodging is always worth it on every character. EV is what keeps you alive in this game.

Well I just won as a MfTm of Chei on CAO. My morgue file is here if you're interested. First game I played on CAO since 2008, lol.
Chei plus forms is absolutely bonkers. Both Blade Hands and Statue Form get massive damage boosts from his attribute gains and to top it off you get to 30-some Int so you can cast spells up to level 5 with just your spellcasting skill. Honestly I just kind of rolled through everything except for a few encounters. I had a bit of a tough spot in Vault where I was hovering around 60 HP but had a ton of enemies around but I stepped out of time and that got me down to just two monsters that I could handle and then I healed up. I was dumb and used Silence as Blade Hands was running out and the Ancient Lich I was fighting had already summoned a Pit Fiend. And there were a couple Pan Lords on during the escape who could torment (and since I was wearing a full set of ponderous armor, a single movement action could be very painful if I got double-tormented). But I think the fact that the morgue log has zero instances where it's recording low HP pretty much sums this one up.
Not a lot that can stand up to 30/30/30 stats with either 15/45 or 35/35 AC/EV plus Blade Hands or Statue Form. I took out a couple Orbs of Fire in just two attacks.

Hmm, looks like you went crazy with the mut/remove mut potions around turn 90000 but your mutation set was pretty nice!

It was purely from my stock of ~35 potions of mutation. With that many potions it's a pretty safe bet to go chugging them until you end up in a decent spot (there are more good mutations than bad, so on average each potion you quaff is beneficial). The only mutations that wouldve been potentially game-ending were teleportitis or random berserking so I felt it was a good enough chance to end up positive.

I think this is the best roguelike. It's not as silly was Nethack. It's a bit more sober and conservative. Also it has complex but elegant design.
The game is difficult. I tried playing with saving the save game, but it becomes less fun that way. I just like to click click through the game. So often I am at risk at dying vs strong monsters like the first centaur, the first ogre, Sigmund, some other unique.
I am playing a bit again but now with more patience. So far best char was lvl11 and died on lvl 4 of the orc mines.
Going to try a Tm of Chei. But what about demonspawn, draconian or sludge elf vs merfolk. Mf doesn't really sound appealing to me.

I hate Cheibriados like the plague. This is because he makes you slow as hell and doesn't do much for your early game. Granted, his stat boosts does make you a powerhouse in the later game, but all the time up to that you better pray you don't get any fast and poison immune monsters, because they will hunt you down and kill you. God damn killer bees.
|
ok I've given up on draconians for now and am going to play on FE's strengths. Kenku get +3 Conj, +1 Fire, and +1 Dodge. Gonna be a pure mage (won't train fighting at all) KeFE worshiping Vehumet.

God damn killer bees. I'd only ever take him on a Transmuter, because the only enemy that can even hope to actually kill you early game is hydras (and that only if you didn't learn Ice Form) or a poison-resistant unique. Tm is off-the-wall ridiculous early on, so much so that Chei is actually only a drawback once you run into stuff that can Torment you imo (but in exchange you two-hit Orbs of Fire).
I mean, as a Tm who's not worshipping Chei I don't run away from anything anyway, so not being able to run isn't a big deal in that specific case.
Sludge Elf has the overall best natural aptitudes for Transmuter. Merfolk mainly benefits from better Dodging and from making Swamp/Shoals dramatically less painful to explore.
I've won a DrTm a long time ago but unless you're really into Dragon Form (which, unless it's changed since the last time I cast it, isn't really worth the trouble) their aptitudes are not great. But I kinda just don't like Draconians in general.
Demonspawn should be an okay Tm, never tried it much.

Actually they changed dragon form up a bit, such that Draconians get an inbult wizardry bonus to the casting of it. Combine this with Sif Muna's miscast protection, and you can cast dragon form effectively pretty early in the game.
As for your thoughts in Chei, I agree all the way. Although I've not even managed to win a Tm of Chei yet...

lulz, I tried playing a few lives as KoBe (what a great character/class; I should really call myself "beef"), but apparently I suck at berserking at the right times -_- TrBe was easier...

Right now my demonspawn transmuter of Chei is lvl 10.
In in lvl 1 of the Lair right now. I skipped orc mines for now and I stair danced some killed bees out of the Hive but they kinda get a lot of attacks.
I made only one peace of armor ponderous so far.
I have found the book of unlife and the book of spacial translocations. Any suggetions what spells to learn from these next?
Also, I found a pearl dragon armor but so far it seems to impede casting way too much. Should I keep it to use later or just drop it? Kinda have a lot of items right now.

If you want to kill bees just evaporate a poison potion on top of them. If they're already on top of you then you can first use Ice Form or Statue Form to get rPois and then evaporate a potion on yourself. Spider Form is actually pretty good at killing bees too, since the poison kills them after they start fleeing and you get a nice to-hit bonus.
I made only one peace of armor ponderous so far.
If you make even one piece of armor ponderous, you move more slowly than almost every enemy, so you might as well go all the way for the bigger benefits. As it is now you're just making it so you can't flee but get very little in return. (Small exception in that spider form with 1 ponderous piece might actually be faster than default speed, not sure. Still not worthwhile imo.)
Generally I just go ahead and immediately make the first piece of armor of each type I come across ponderous when I play Tm of Chei.
Also, I found a pearl dragon armor but so far it seems to impede casting way too much. Should I keep it to use later or just drop it? Kinda have a lot of items right now. For a Tm, don't wear anything but a robe (or animal skin, I guess) defensively. Maybe leather armor if it has a nice resistance. Heavy armor not only ends up worse defensively (low Armour aptitude plus most forms don't benefit from armour much but all benefit from dodging) but also slows down your attacks and hurts your spellcasting. In other words, makes you lose.

The Knowledge Bots say wearing shields penalizes spellcasting, but when I equip this +2 buckler on my DEFE, the game says my cast rates aren't affected at all? Is it worth training shields on a pure mage? I lose 1 EV for 9 SH.
|
Yeup, bucklers are pretty cool. The net effect is rather minimal however. Go ahead and train shields a little if you can't find some place better for your xp.

I just lost a level 23 Demonspawn venomancer to boris :/ First character that i've been able to cast ice storm with, but i got 3 misscasts on boris which killed me.

I saw a half-filipino friend of mine play Rogue on the old Tandy 1000s they had at the Prescott, AZ Public Library back in like 1986-87.
Memorieees.
