BFR= Big F'n Robot
They got nerfed a couple times and the initial grind for it was somewhat hard. Over the years it got easier and the BFR got less powerful. I never had a problem with them because there were atleast 5 hard counters for them. They added alot of favor if you ask me....I endorse them

I have many, many fond memories of Planetside. Largescale Gal Drops, carpet bombing with close air support. Armor Columns and spec-ops. All good times, good times.
I remember, my outfit went Cyssor for a week, started up an outfit called the Cereal Killas, we all had names based on breakfast cereals. I think I was Ricekrispies or something... We all grabbed uni-max and just mass maxrushed everything. We had serverwide recognition within 3 hours, and dozens of people asking to join.
I still miss my Skyguards though...
Note, taking out BRFs solo in a stealth suit is fun.

I loved how you had to hack vehicles in order to steal them. Unlike the Battlefield games where you just jump in.
In that sense, it was way more realistic.
I hope they keep the tanks the way they are. 1 driver, 1 gunner.

Oh my god.
This is such crazy news. Planetside beta + the few months after release easily represented the most thrilling time I've ever had in an MMO. When the leaders of multiple outfits coordinated together such that hundreds of people all mobilized to the tune of 20-30 galaxy dropships mustering in the sanctuary all at once to make a unified push, it was nothing short of amazing. I remember at one point when NC made one of these massive coordinated efforts and managed to push the Terrans back to their sanctuary on every continent.
Then they implemented the foolish "smear the queer" LLU capture the flag elements against intensely vocal opposition, then came the odd underground cavern expansion that reminded me more of an Unreal game than anything else. And of course, the BFRs that were totally uncalled for and completely ruined the entire focus of the game.
I hope they don't make the same mistakes this time around. Here's to hoping.

I'll admit Core (whore) combat was crap but the flails were awesome.
I don't know about you guys but I thought I was driving a siege tank and it was FKING COOL! Especialy when we were using spotters in mosquitos.
A 'lil more to the left! A bit more! Ok right there!
SHWABAM!!!

The nostalgia is coursing through my veins! I wish Planetside was free for the whole subscription.
Remember when BFRs first came out? Oh my god you couldn't even walk outside of a tech plant without seeing ATLEAST 20 BFRs trying to get to the damn exit at one time! LOL.
And am I the only one that found doing ANT runs to power up a base extremely relaxing? Lol.
P.S - NEW CONGLOMERATE FTW. Jackhammer triple shot fuckyeah.

glad everyone loved ps as much as me

heres some more info

A couple of different sources have now contacted us to confirm that the unrevealed Planetside sequel/remake Planetside Next will support “thousands” of players across the battlefield, in a manner similar to the original. Given the appearance of a couple of different images based on models from vehicles appearing in the old game, it looks like Planetside Next will be a straight-up remake of the original concept, albeit it with a different balance, as apparently the Galaxy (pictured) will play an even more important role in the game this time around.
in an entry on his blog John notes the reasons PlanetSide is important to him and what he envisions for PlanetSide Next.
Planetside had a lot of really great things about it, but it also had some frustrating things. The whole Sanctuary concept is something that slowed things down too much. We also didn't get people back into the action quickly enough. But the core of Planetside - massive battles with vehicles and infantry was something we nailed really well.
To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better. Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization, and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics.
Damn I love Planetside. I really do.
He also had something very interesting to say in relation to Core Combat in the comments:
With respect to Core Combat, I completely agree. It was the wrong direction. At that time we were dealing with a new game and we thought we had the direction right. In hindsight, we didn't at all. BFR's are another story and I think more debateable. They were in our heads for a long time. Friggin Giant Robots ![](/mirror/smilies/smile.gif) The 20/20 vision that comes with hindsight is often the best prism to plan for the next thing. Hopefully we get it more right this time, but I'm still pretty happy overall. Another source suggests that the game will be scaled to support “low-end” machines as old as six years. (So by implication pixel shader 3.0 cards and higher.) The game will apparently be launching in March, with a beta starting next month. We are going to be all over this.
|
i still cant believe that its launching in march.. there is almost zero information about the game ![](/mirror/smilies/frown.gif) but i hope my dream comes true and i can play planetside 24/7 again :D
