Much of the Planetside 2 staff lost their jobs today after a wave of layoffs following the acquisition of SoE by Colombus Nova

I was always optimistic about this game but now I just feel a dull pit in my stomach thinking about it.

Well, PS2 was already in a bad state with all the bugs, latency problems and lack of progress, and it was also developing in the wrong direction with the removal of depth of gameplay.

There is a possibility those people will be replaced, but at this point I doubt it.

It still has 2 active EU servers and 2 active US servers (1 west, 1 east). The player base isn't what it used to be and a lot of players have quit over various issues (lack of an actual strategic metagame being the most common). It's still a very good FPS, but development is very slow and you can essentially add a year to all promised dates and still fall short, so I don't expect any changes any time soon. If you don't have a group to play with, you won't experience the best the game has to offer since basically all the people that tried to create meta and ran public platoons have quit completely, so normal live play is mostly zerging around.

My outfit is still fairly active, but a lot of the players have switched to other games and mostly just hang out on TS, so I'm close to making it a multi-gaming group instead of a pure PS2 outfit since I don't have any hope for PS2's long term survival.

Do anyone here still play this game? Having tried it out recently it seems with the added construction aspect of the game it has got a lot better recently.

I sure still play this game.

Construction is nice and all but it does not really integrate well into the core of the game, in my opinion. Huge no construction zones prohibit augmention of existing bases by player constructions to the point where you need to build your base in the middle of nowhere. Basicly building a base from scratch; which is cool but get stale because assaulting such a base takes so much time that squads rarely group together to take out a HIVE. So most bases are uncontested for a very long time.
What is best? To crush the Zerg, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the Protoss.

True it needs a lot of tweaking, but there's still a few places where bases on the maps are really good. (watchtower looking towards the crown, bridge at skydock, etc.

Still play on and off once in a while. Pretty fun game and offers a lot of variety in play styles. It has its share of problems on the balance side but still quite fun if you just like to destroy shit and cause carnage. I have never tried construction, it just seems like a boring play style to sit in 1 spot and hope enemy comes to you. Much more fun to go where the fighting is imo.

The size of the Planetside 2 Dev Team has doubled over the last year.

Some pretty good changes have been made to the game. The continent locking rules create a greater purpose for fighting in a massive war. A pretty cool basebuilding a resource collection mechanic has been added.

PC player #s are very, very slowly declining. I think Daybreak Games have done a better job of getting the player base to spend money. I think this is why they are spending more money on developing the game.

I just watched a couple dev videos because I didn’t know they added in construction. It seems like an engaging feature and I like its design. I don’t like how there is a harvester that someone needs to drive around and grab material. I feel that would be more fun as an automated economy for players to defend, but that is just me. I like it when games like this give teams AI workers to defend, but are not the complete focus of the match.

I also like how they keep the construction away from the main hard points. It smart feature because it keeps the main objectives of the game fixed in power and forces players to build advanced bases. Developers need to be careful with features like that because they can be used to undercut the pace, which a section of players enjoy doing. And building endless defensive structures is the most video game thing people can do, so I am glad they push that out toward the enemy team.

When I played before it was very expensive to get a couple reasonable kits to play around with. Has the pricing changed?

it is a fun game.
PS2 is in a bit of trouble though... that has nothing to do with the game's financial success or failure.

Columbus Nova had its assets frozen.

I still play also. Regardless of the negatives, it's still one of the best shooters on the market. I prefer ps1 personally and am unsure if ps3 will ever happen now though.

if Daybreak ceases to exist whoever ends up owning the Planetside IP as a result of this shenanigans will auction it off to the highest bidder; similar to how THQ's IP got auctioned off. It ended up working out ok for the Company of Heroes franchise.

So it might turn out ok.
