Hey guys a buddy of mine wants me to get into this game.
I know nothing about it.
I'd greatly appreciate it if you answer any of the following questions.
All I know is it's an MMOFPS and generally MMO's are baaaaad news for me. Is there much (or any?) grinding involved in this? How fun is it? How competitive? Do I need to play regularly to stay relevant? How much skill is involved (where a one is MMORPG pre-level cap PvE, six is LoL, eight is Dota 2 nine is SC2, and ten is SCBW)? I guess there's no FPSes in that scale which could be problematic... Well whatever, you know what I mean roughly.
Thanks in advance for any answers you can provide you don't need to provide all of them if you don't have time. I just want a general idea of the game.

It's nothing like an MMORPG. It's basically just an FPS with a lot of people on a huge map with lots of bases.

Grinding's not that important, you can just play the game and get certs that way. Some people reckon you can get certs faster by "grinding" as a medic or engineer but IMO just play as whatever classes you like and you'll get decent certs anyway. So the "grind" doesn't feel like a grind unless normal playing feels like a grind to you. It's pretty fun (but I roll with an outfit on teamspeak, which makes it x100 better than if you're running solo). It's competitive enough, but not in an esports way. Don't really need to play regularly to stay relevant, it's just an FPS in that regard. On that scale, probably like 4, although some FPS fans may disagree with me. After a couple weeks playing, you'll be good enough skill level to be doing a decent kills/deaths ratio.

You can play this game as little or as much as you want. You don't need to play regularly at all to have fun. Skill involved isn't too high but it depends on what you want to do in the game. But after some practice you can win most 1v1 situations.

No matter how hard I try, I never get into a position on Miller where I can do that. I play NC and whenever there is a zerg coming in the opposing team, a huge swarm of tanks and mosquitoes/lib follows quickly after.

As others have said, the MMO part is mostly about there being really massive battles.
There is a progression system, so depending on your style of play, there might be situations where you have to play for a while until you can unlock what you want. New weapons can go as high as 1000 certs, which is about 1-2 weeks of every day playing if you don't grind but just play normally. If you focus on cert gain, i.e. grind, you can do that in 2-3 days. For comparision, i play PS2 a few hours every day since release and i made 3.5k certs without ever "grinding".
You don't have to unlock new weapons however, the default weapons are good enough - other weapons are usually sidegrades instead of upgrades - and the difference between a fully upgrades gun and a default gun is small enough that you can still win 1v1 fights, especially if you get the first shot.
From a mechanical standpoint, the skill ceiling for infantry and ground vehicles is not that high, it's a normal shooter like for example the Battlefield series. For aircraft, the skill requirement to not fly your plane into the next mountain is a little higher and you can always do some impressive stuff but most of the players still manage to crash into a bridge while trying to dodge some rockets and i have no doubt that this won't change, so you don't have to practice all the time to keep up. The Time-To-Kill is so short (1-3s for infantry) that you don't really have the time to show your mechanical prowess.
The real skill is teamplay however, Planetside 2 is all about teamplay and - as TotalBiscuit says - logistics. As such, any newcomer should try to find an outfit (outfit = Clan/Guild/Team) ASAP to get into organized play. Being online regularly is usually a requirement of those outfits, though that of course depends on the outfit.
You can play on your own and only log in once a week and maybe join some public squads (squad = group of up to 12 players), though that only gets you 1/3rd of the fun of PS2. Having regular teammates that fight together with you through all the battles and a competent squad/platoon (platoon = up to 4 squads) leader can really change how you play and enjoy the game.

Yeah, I really should have made that outfit VS or TR. I think it was yesterday when i saw the first signs of an NC airforce and it lasted about 5 minutes eventhough it looked d*mn impressive. At all the other times, NC on Miller never have any air control and as such, flying a liberator is basically suicide since Scythe and Mosquitos jump at you the second you lift off and there is not enough air cover to protect you.
Hey anyone who's been trying to get an invite from me on Mattherson, I'm sorry I haven't been playing my usual hours. Try asking Insolence for an outfit invite if you can't get a hold of Rahsun.
The dev's have already admitted to making a couple changes based on very popular reddit threads, and this change would REALLY help to make Planetside 2 more strategic and awesome.
Please support it! Or if you don't like the specific changes, support the idea behind it (making certs not all about kill whoring).
I just had an idea on how to troll your own faction in a ridiculous fashion.
You all know the Biolabs where the lower shields can't be walked through. Well, Shieldbreaker (GSD) Sunderers can. If you drive in with a shieldbreaker, kill all the resistance and then hack a terminal and spawn an AMS sunderer inside the shield, a lot of people will end up spawning at it since, well, people never look at where they spawn.
First they will be confused. Then they will look for a way out, they will try to walk through the shields - but that doesn't work. Then they will try to use the teleporter - but that doesn't work either. Then they will start to panic and shoot at the forcefield - but that of course doesn't work either. Finally the realization starts to sink in - they are trapped, no way out.
The intelligent people will redeploy but most people can't think properly and they will pile up between the force fields.

Yeah I saw that happen once. Came up to a VS held Biolab and there are about 100 people and an AMS sundy just sat in that area looking confused and bored. It was kind of hilarious.

It's not coming for a while. They did say that it's going to be retroactive though, so what you unlock now will be unlocked account-wide when the feature arrives.
so after being stuck with the starting semi automatic rifle of vs infiltrators, ive got to say ive grown quite accustomed to it. is there any semi automatic sniper worth upgrading to or should i just stick with the defaullt one?

I've tried both and found that the bolt action sniper rifles seem to be better imo. The semi-auto rifles do very little damage and without the right upgrades the recoil makes it difficult to hit the target enough to kill it. At least with the bolt action you can one shot - head shot an enemy. Like everything in the game, it really is based on preference and what works for you the best.
