- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Team Liquid Intro League - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This league is to introduce new players to BB, and hopefully get them interested in joining the main TL Open League. The goal is to introduce some basic play strategies and get some games under people's belts.

In Season 1 of the TL Open many new players dropped out, and I'm guessing several of those were because they got rolled and didn't have an opportunity to learn some basics.

The Into League should be about having some fun and playing some games, nothing super hardcore. If you enjoy it I encourage people to join the TL Open league, and if Blood Bowl isn't your bag you can drop out without impacting a longer season.

If you are in the TL Open League you can still join this league too.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FORMAT & RULES - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This league will run as a Championship with divisions of 4-6 players. Ideally we will have 3-4 new players and 1-2 veteran players per division, but this will vary depending on interest.

There will be 1 game per week, with match days ending Saturday night at midnight (06:00 GMT (+00:00) your local time). Thus each season will be ({players} - 1) weeks long (about 3-5 weeks each).

All games should be scheduled through TeamLiquid PMs.

  • In the event a game isn't played due to a scheduling conflict a 1-1 draw will be given. The players must message the league admin saying they are active and they would like a draw for the match day.
  • If one player is inactive or does not respond to PMs a 2-0 Win will be given to the active player. The active player must message the PMs that were sent to the other coach trying to arrange the game to the league admin.
  • If a game is unplayed at the end of the match day and the league admin has not received any PMs the game will be a 1-1 draw.

+ Show Spoiler [Frequently Asked Questions and Rules] +
What edition of the game are we using?
Legendary Edition. Even if you only want to play with the basic edition teams, the software requires everybody to purchase the legendary edition.

How many games will we be committed to play?
There will be 1 game per week, with match days ending Saturday night at midnight (06:00 GMT (+00:00) your local time). All games should be scheduled through TeamLiquid PMs. You are encouraged to be in contact with your next opponent in order to schedule games in a timely fashion. This is an international league, with the majority of players coming from NA/EU- be mindful of this. You will not be penalized if you can't agree on a schedule with your opponent, but you won't be rewarded either.

Can you extend the Match Day?
Due to the limitations of the software, we cannot delay a single game without holding everybody back. The league must progress as one. If it is midnight and you/your opponent are still playing we will delay, but in general extensions will not be given.

What if my opponent and I cannot agree on a match date before the deadline?
The game will be ruled a draw. Each team will get winnings, a random MVP, and one random touchdown.

What if I can't make contact with my opponent?
Let me know before the deadline. If this happens, we can award you a 2-0 win with 2x MVPs, 2x random TDs, and 2x winnings. I'd still rather each and every game be played, but giving WOs will happen if people go inactive.

Are we allowed to foul in the game?
You can foul any time you want. It is Blood Bowl, after all.

What happens if we disconnect?
This will mostly be up to you and your oppoent. Your options are: 1) Reset match and replay, 2) Give a win to the player who was likely (or sure) to win (this is the same as a WO as if opponent was no-show), or 3) Give 1-1 draw (same as draw for scheduling conflict). Please read the following post for more information:
Disconnect procedures/rulings/etc. READ THIS.

The best way to learn is to play. There is no substitute for experience.

Outside the game you can always drop by the Blood Bowl IRC channel (#TLBB on irc.quakenet.org). This is a good place to ask questions and trash talk your opponents during games.

You can also post in this thread with any questions you have.

Some coaches stream their games, which you can watch live or VODs.

Lyter = Satisfaktion?

Or was this a copy-paste typo?

The plan right now is to create the league this week, and then start next weekend (or whenever everyone has completed signups). So I'll give it a couple days to let people show interest, and then I'll make the league.

I created "TeamLiquid Mini League #1". Password is: 4pool

The league is set for 6 teams, so we still need 1 more signup. If I don't get one I'll coerce another TL Open player to join us :D

Again the focus of the league is on learning, and while winning is totally sweet share as much as possible. Point out things like "oh you could blitz here and then..." or "that was a bad spot to stand that guy because..." or "that was a totally sweet play, I'm going to steal it!" Leave the winning for the TL open league, just have fun here.

As soon as we get all the slots filled we'll get started. The plan is to continue teams to get a feel for how team development goes, but this may change depending on how we all feel at the end of the first season.

edit: Looks like there might be additional interest, in which case I can remake to 8 teams. Just post in the thread (or msg me in IRC) if you're interested, but haven't posted yet.

Ok since we have some new additions I will remake the league. I'll post when I do that (in a few hours when I'm home from work), unfortunately everyone will need to re-apply.

Regarding replays, there will be VoDs of some games, but I wasn't planning on using BBmanager or uploading replays, but I guess we could.

After watching parts of the first couple games I've noticed some common trouble points.

1) Passing
Unless you're an elf you probably shouldn't be passing regularly. Passing takes a lot of roles, and therefore has a high chance of a turnover. If you do need to pass you should do as short a pass as possible. You can move and then pass. I've noticed people making very long passes without moving. In general you should move as close to your receiver as possible, then make your pass. You can also do a handoff, which only requires 1 roll (to catch), rather than 2 (pass & catch).

2) "Free" moves, and idle players
I've also noticed free players (no one in base contact) not getting moved a lot. These moves are free (don't require any rolls) and should typically be done very early in your turn, since they can't cause a turnover. Also, don't forget about players and have them just hanging out away from the action. At least move them towards the action or mark up some players or help with assists.

3) Crowd Pushes
If you have a player within 2 spaces of the sideline you should be looking out for crowd pushes. You should be especially worried if your opponent has any frenzy players. Additionally you should look at any opponent players near sidelines and ask yourself if you can crowd push them. Crowd pushes can be very powerful as the automatically remove a player from the drive. This can quickly cause a snowball effect as one team gets outnumbered. So be careful near the sidelines!!!!

4) Caging / Protecting the ball
There is a balance between being safe for THIS turn, and being able to advance and be safe NEXT turn. Think ahead for where you want to go and how to get there. Also look at where the opponents players can be next turn. If the opponent doesn't have enough move to reach the ball carrier he doesn't need any escorts. Also the most effective cage looks like the 5 on a die, like this:
X-X
-B-
X-X

Your opponet can't get to the ball carrier (B) without making some ridiculous dodges and will probably get a -2d block. A cross (+) is not very effective as your opponent can just walk up to the ball carrier without dodges.

5) Safe stuff first
Basically an extension of the second point, but in general you should be doing free stuff -> safe stuff -> risky stuff. Part of this is just getting familar with the odds on different actions and how the game mechanics work, but you should always ask yourself "how likely is this to result in a turnover, and how screwed would I be if this fails?". It sucks to basically lose a turn because you failed a roll before you got to move most of your players.

A lot of this is just experience and familiarity with the game, so don't get discouraged while you're learning!

As our intro league draws to a close I wanted to solicit some feedback. Did people like this? Was it useful? Would you like to see it continue? Would you prefer to just have an open league (like matchmaking), in which case we can use the TL Open league, or do you like the scheduled game format?
