Well, it can't be a completely self-imposed thing. It's one thing to pull out a potion and drink it in the middle of combat. That makes sense, but combat should not pause while you fumble through your list of things (if it's not hotkeyed) to find the potion. There's no way to do that with a self-restriction. Maybe a mod will come to save the day...
However, I will create the restriction that I am not allowed to switch equipment whenever I am in combat. That's always been so dumb. Oblivion won't let you drop your weapon if you are swinging it, and they won't let you rest/wait in the middle of the fight, but you could take off your complete set of ebony armor and equip a complete set of glass armor no problem. You shouldn't be allowed to take anything off during a fight =/.

the tactic feature? you mean the dumbed down copy of baldur's gate d&d tactical overview? for consoles?

When watching the gameplay trailer, you definitely can switch spells without pausing the game, and i don't believe they're hotkeyed? Correct me if I am wrong which I may be, but the player looked like he just chose from a list of spells while playing, so while I'm sure you can switch while it's paused, it also looks like you can switch while it is not paused at well, therefore allowing you that handicap and realgame experience. Can't say if it's the same for weapons or other items though without hotkeys.
However, I will create the restriction that I am not allowed to switch equipment whenever I am in combat. That's always been so dumb. I gotta say I agree with you here. They could easily take that out of the game, and I can't see how anyone would have the right to complain. It's a perfectly reasonable thing for someone to not be allowed to switch completely different armor sets mid battle, hopefully that doesn't reoccur here.

This thread is now about what to do with yourself for the next 11 days.
I is way to excite already.

^^nice first post lol. The demos showed the guy picking from a list of "favorites", he just had a lot of favorites and was playing on console, so instead of having the number row for hotkeys he had to scroll through on the d-pad to pick what he wanted. Assuming in the PC version you just set certain spells/weapons to certain keys, then just select them when you want.

Thanks! Is it weird my first post on a SC2 website, is on a completely different game? =P .
But ahh, okay. I was afraid that would be the answer I would get hah. Oh well, I can still forgive bethesda for this, they have way to good of a game to be too dissapointed about it.

I agree with you, but I love magic too much to not make a mage. I REALLY wish they would change up spell casting like BG2, where you took bit of time to cast your spell, but would chant in ancient arcane language, and no mana system. Spells are memorized and limited per day, so a lot less frequent spell casting, but in return, spells are more powerful. It also mages pitifully weak and strong late game where there are options to reduce casting speed and buy yourself time like contingencies...which is how mages should be.
Do the same thing you did for archery pretty much. It would be amazing if someone made a mod for this

At least on the PC version, you can hotkey your potions, spells, and items to switch into (weapons, not armor) so that you don't have to enter into the menu system during combat at all. If you are really role playing any type of character, especially a mage, it is like D&D because you have to prepare your spells before combat and only a few of them if you want to use them

Gnnh... Spells per day have always struck me as a pretty gimicky part of D&D. However, I like the idea of actually having to prepare your spells. There was a time in RPGs where you had to gather components for spell preparation. Kind of like alchemy, but you make spells instead of potions. It's true that a system that is a little more creative than manabar casting would be a little refreshing. It can also be both, with cantrips being castable at will and world-shattering spells having harsh requirements.

In Oblivion vanilla you could use 1-0 by default, and there were mods released within a few weeks of the original game that could allow you to use much more more if you wanted to, or to switch between sets of 10 hotkeys using your arrow keys.

Yea, I know about the 1-0, but back when I played Oblivion, I was a computer noob and spent most of my time playing Oblivion on Xbox. Didn't know about modding.
Also, reaching past 5 (well not anymore after playing SC2) begins to feel awkward, so I like to keep it at everything before the 6, Y, H, N barrier with a shift variant of each key.

I Like that there's no classes in Skyrim. The class system was so abused in Oblivion I would basically make a class then train all the minor skills so I could be level 1 with 99's. Which of course was awesome, but probably not how they intended the game to be played.

This way, crowd control and slows would be a necessity instead of spamming your highest dmg nuke till your oom.
