This is a worse game than Obilivon and I almost wished I pirated this. Could you elaborate? I find this strange, unless your definition of terrible is referring to something else (could be bug) You don't see the jagged edges despite 8x AA + 16x AF? Water looking like embedded papers with disgusting colors? Swinging your sword and "magically" hit the enemy, running down from the sidewalk only to see both your feet "magically" float in the air? I haven't taken it up that high yet (<1 hr played) but I'm seeing very little aliasing (but it is there) at only 4x+4x... Will try forcing it up later with high textures and see if it's any different

Just going to bed after playing for 11 hours. The graphics are great. I don't know about muddy textures issues but I honestly don't stare at the ground THAT hard. I just love the amazing environments.
So far there have been a ton of huge improvements in AI, quest quality, and just attention to detail in general. The biggest improvement by far is the combat though. There is a place for archery, backstabbing, melee, shields, and magic... many times all in the same fight.
This is the first time in an Elder Scrolls game that I'm actually having fun in combat.
Only bad thing is that yeah, the menus are pretty terrible. They're better than Oblivion's, but only very slightly. When a mod team releases a new UI things will be perfect.

You can do 8x+16x just fine - it won't matter a fuck.
We have to wait months for mods just so this game become a modern PC game ;(

I wouldn't say there's a LOT of aliasing, but it's definitely present, as if anything above 2x or 4x just isn't contributing.
I'm not too upset about the texture quality though

Is anyone else finding Archery and sneak attack/Archery to be a bit underwhelming like it has been in previous games? I've only got 3-4 hours of gameplay in so far, but the sneaky Woodelf Archer/thief I wanted to play isn't really working out so well.

In the past games ranged/bow has been underwhelming in a "boring" sense, but I've always enjoyed it in that the ranged advantage is strong in combat anyway, being able to strafe away and get a lot of shots off on a pursuing target.
Haven't used archery yet in Skyrim but if it's "plain" like the past few games I wouldn't be surprised... still not a good choice nonetheless

Make sure you have the perk to do 3x sneak attack damage with bows. You won't be 1-shotting any higher level mobs with it, but I'm finding archery to be fairly effective - especially if you are good at dodging their arrows.

Take a look into your skills. Archery/Sneak/Light amor. The higher your skill level, the better archery (and others) get.

Anyone here playing on PS3? I just completed Bleak Falls Barrow (Dungeon) but didn't get the Trophy on PSN! Shocking, I know... (before I get flamed for being a trophy collecting noob, I don't care about the trophy itself, but just interested to know if it's a bug?)

It immediately set my gfx to "ultra high" (lol) when i started the launcher and during the opening sequence i was fucking amazed by it all. Im probably going to implement that ini file edit someone posted earlier just to see if i can get improvement. ^_^

Are your graphics perhaps just too high for your machine? Try playing for a while on lowest settings to recreate the crash, and see if that helps

During the tutorial stuff I was really unimpressed. the graphics didn't seem that nice... but as soon as you step out in to the world, look out over some cliffs... It really is impressive (even on my humble gtx460 with most of the advanced settings mid-range).
The gameplay itself is fun, I went straight to the mages college, took me like 3-4 hours just to do the intro stuff and the first quest there... I'm up to the second one now, gotta go collect some books...
Good times, don't know how much I'll play as it definitely seems like a time-sink if you want to search every box, get every gold coin etc... (I try to because in too many games it turns out you Need money later on for stuff) but it's mildly fun none-the-less... I do wish the elder scrolls series started having cut-scenes at the beginning though, I hardly have any idea wtf is going on, and people spend too much time explaining things in bad fake accents.

"The Steam servers are too busy to handle your request..."
You're fucking with me, right? I bought the damn game on the DVD.. what the fuck is this shit.. fucking Steam and all other such services, it's a damn off-line single player game...
edit: Now it's DOWNLOADING the game?... waaaaaaaaaaaat

5 hours on a not so great laptop. So far, no crashes, bugs or anything. The loading times are surprisingly quick, the ui isnt that bad and i've got no complaints so far. I really am liking this game, and it seems to get better as it goes along.
I think my proudest achievement is killing 4 giants. Took me alot of deaths and arrows, but damn it was satisfying when they finally died.

There is a way to force an install off of the DVD, though you'll still need to download an update afterwards. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382
Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc
Log in to Steam and click on Library. Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm. Insert the first disc into your computer. Close Steam (Steam > Exit). Press Windows Key + R to open Run In the Run window type:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:
Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct. Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location. Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.
It's also useful to change your download region to that of a remote country. I set mine to South Korea lol, even though I live in the US. I have a friend who set theirs to Ukraine. Last night when all the downloads were downing servers, I switched from the full Chicago server to the Korean server, and I was able to get download speeds of over 500 kb/s.

ok, so i am getting this for the PC today, but i have a question-
is it worth it to use a PS3 controller to play? is it even possible? it sounds like it is not well optimized for a mouse so if i could use a controller for better effect that would be awesome, but i dont really know how it works.

I heard that you can use a 360 controller, as that is officially supported (and there is even an option for a 360 control in the settings). I'm not sure about a PS3 control, though.
However, I find that with tweaks to the in-game sensitivity settings and removing mouse acceleration via tweaks to the .ini file, mouse and keyboard usage is quite tolerable and perhaps even preferred, as there is a way to map items to your 1-0 number keys.

Thanks a lot, i think my brain imploded when the Steam crap started, now it's installing via DVD.
