I tried searching for blood bowl here but doesn't seem to be any threads. I just want to recommend this game, it is one great strategy game. I'm sure there are some more ppl out there playing both bb and sc2?
With legendary edition the number of races went from 7 to 20 and with that there is of course more variation in matchups. The online client has a matchmaking system just like sc2.
Anyone else playing this game? The late game blood bowl situations are some of the most intense in strategy games imo.
Played a little bit of Blood Bowl tabletop, and I have the non-legendary edition (from last year). I've been debating getting the Legendary Edition, but I'm more interested in playing with friends, and none of my friends are really interested in buying it. Still considering it, though. It would be awesome to have a Teamliquid league of some variety for it.
Its certainly an amazing turn-based strategy game (theres a real-time mode, but believe it or not, turn-based is infinite superior), if none of you have played it before. There is a little bit of luck involved, which will often bite you in the ass, but minimizing the amount of bad luck that can effect you is, in some ways, the objective of the game.
It's also very fun because of the way results carry over from game to game. To those who don't know much about Blood Bowl, you create a team (with limited resources) and during the course of games, you earn more money in which to upgrade your team. However, you have to battle with constant injuries, and even deaths, which is a constant juggle when you're playing in a league or scheduled in a seasons worth of games.
This thread needs some videos though.
Also, old school Blood Bowl (old MSDOS game) had one of my favorite game songs/intros of all time. Looks like shit now but I love nostalgia.
I bought a version on Steam for $10 a few weeks ago; assuming it's the normal edition, but I honestly have no idea. Just seemed like a cool game and a good deal. Have yet to boot it up, though. Just checked my desktop and it's apparently the Dark Elves edition, so I don't know if that's standard, legendary, or something else entirely.
I would definitely buy a game if we had enough people down to play a TL league. That would be hella fun. We could do game write-ups and whatnot, too.
We'd all have to have the Legendary Edition, though. I remember reading that they aren't cross compatible- so even if you want to play one of the first 8 races, you have to play with the Legendary.
I purchased the Legen...wait for it...dairy edition, since I had the original, and loved the board game. I'd be up for some kind of multiplayer league.
It would be cool to make a TL-league happen. The nice thing about bloodbowl is that it's pretty much perfect to create a new team and play in a league.
We could have some sort of group stage and then playoffs?
Looks like we have 4+ who'd be interested in a Teamliquid league. I have a friend (who plays sc2 and watches TL streams but is a lurker) who may be interested in as well. If we can get 8, I think we can start a league of some variety.

Very slow moving game, I can see why its not popular.
You essentially watched a youtube video of a chess match/M:tG match/etc. and decided it's "slow moving."
Edit: The issue with the popularity of this particular incarnation of the game is that there's a free (though less graphically pleasing) alternative that's been out for some time and has an established fanbase:
It is a slow-moving game for all intents and purposes, but the game itself (whether its tabletop, fumbbl or this PC game) is wildly popular. It's as slow paced as any board game, but the strategy is what makes it exciting.
Is there a demo for this game? I have enjoyed playing American Football games in the past without actually knowing how to play the game (it was the closest thing to a rugby game at the time) and when I was a kid liked warhammer a bit so this might be pretty fun. Definitely keen if a TL league is set up.

If you like warhammer, american football and strategy games you will like blood bowl.
There are basically finesse teams and brute force teams in BB. The brute force teams try to reduce the number of players of other team (via KO, injury or death) and then run the ball in when there is no def left. The finesse teams try to dodge, pass or just run their way past defence because they cannot match other team with brute force.
After games your players level up which creates opportunities to create the specific characters you want for your team, i.e. what works best for your strat.

Now that they added the Bombardier to the Legendary Edition, its tempting :D

The complete rulebook can be found here. It is a somewhat long read if you look through the whole thing (its a complex game) but if you skim through it to get the core rules, you'll be able to piece a lot of things together.
The most important things to look up are how blocks work (aka tackles/attacks/etc, not with a shield or anything), what unit statistics mean in relation to the game (movement speed, strength, etc) and how the average turn is played out. Past that, theres a ton ton ton of stuff when it comes to building a team, leveling up a team, random factors that come in to play in each game, etc etc, but knowing the core rules is whats most important.
Just tripped over this thread, and is ive been playing quite some BloodBowl through the tabletop and the pc game (both Blood Bowl & Blood Bowl Legendary Edition) i thought i would come with a bit of an input.
For those interested, i can sort out a private TL League, where ppl can play, learn, be ranked etc. ofcourse depending if there is enough ppl interested in this?
For those of you new to the game and want to learn and read abit about it, the official forum of the game makers is where to go:
I played the standard edition quite a bit back near the release but stopped, gonna pick up the legendary edition I think, would be awesome to see a TL league for this
Wow i just played a great game high elf vs ogre. He receives first possesion and gets the ball with a snotling but leaves the sidelines open for me to run through. I run through with 3 players and keep the rest on his 5 ogres. Then out of the blue he actually manages to hand the ball to an ogre, something i didn't even consider and I was in trouble, I've got 3 str players so can't knock that 5 str ogre. I managed to keep it 0-0 until half by staying on his ogre and 4 friends and he was a little bad at executing the run down the field.
Second half starts and I actually still have 10 players (surprisingly). I decide to blitz one of his ogres with my single 4 str player to open a gap. I get to hand the ball to my catcher who is behind my blitzing unit. I knock his ogre down and run up the field trying to defend my catcher but from here everything goes south. My players get injured left and right. My catcher gets knocked down by a snotling . He brings ogres up and there is a standoff for a couple of turns. Turn 14 I have 5 players left on the field, 2 of them prone. He takes the ball with a snotling and throws the snotling with an ogre to have a chance to score touchdown. The throw fails and the snotling is prone on the center of the field with the ball also at the centre of the field.
He understands that it's a dangerous situation for him, it's my turn 15 now and i pick up the ball with one of my throwers, placing a blitzer next to him for protection. I have one single player that could possibly run into the end zone on turn 16. My opponent surrounds the player with a snotling and ogre, surrounds my thrower with snotling and ogre. My turn 16 i manage to "double dodge" with player into endzone, "double dodge" with my thrower, launch a perfect launch that is caught by my lineman in endzone and I win 1-0. Opponent was actually 10-1-0 before this game. GG, I can't imagine how he feels right now.
Does anyone feel the Nords are terribly, terribly OP? I feel like I'm cheating when I play them.. the entire team has block. And most of them have frenzy.

Frenzy can hurt you at times, and block ain't all that great. The best and most OP team was (and probably still is, gotta check it out) the Wood Elves. Who cares about block if you have a ton of agility and movement. Ultimately, it's not about who can stand his ground in a fight but who can score more points in rapid succession (that's why dwarves, who all got block, tough head and what not were great for beginners but as you learned the game they were pretty much worthless). The next great thing is Chaos, but they start to shine very late, when they get a lot of skills an mutations in. The best and closest games I've ever had was Wood Elves vs Goblins for example. Shit was intense - evade, dodge, dodge, dodge, pick up the ball, evade, dodge, dodge, pass, repeat.
I've been looking at this for sometime, is it easy enough for someone who never played warhammer to get into? Coz I doubt i'd want to spend £30 on steam for a game I might not like. But I am more likely to spend £15 on something that might or might not be to my liking.

Its like any other game, play a bunch of games to learn the rules and the basics but if u like the warhammer universe, im sure ul like this as well!
A TL BloodBowl league would be sweet. I have the DE edition, but would pick up the legendary edition for a league. Send me a PM or post info here if you get something going.
I've been looking up a lot of stuff on youtube and it does peak my interests quite a bit. But i'm still worried about spending £30 and playing for like 6 hours. (Prototype i'm looking at you.) Is there a longevity in the single player also what's the multi-player like? And also is the Legendary Edition the version needed to participate in the league that could or could not be made?
I've wanted to play this game for a while, and the its always looked appealing. But I was wondering how the multiplayer is, how easy is it to find someone to find to play with? I'm just looking for a good player base for multiplayer, I'm not that interested in the single player
From my very limited experience so far, (about 2 days of owning the game) it seems very easy to get a game, the chat channels feel active and there is matchmaking and public leagues to join. For these leagues you have to join them with a newly built team so no porting over your crazy beef stuff from single player, you gotta level your stuff through playing others.
If anyone cares to try this game out, please READ THE RULEBOOK BEFORE PLAYING: I cannot stress this enough, without understanding the machanics behind the game and having an idea of the die roll chances involved, players tend to get frustrated quickly.
The game has a steep learning curve in the beginning, but do not let that deter you, its a great game and can give countless hours of fun both as a boardgame and via playing it online. I have the normal edition from last year and I'm seriously considering getting the legendary edition now.

No I can stomp them with my power team and outmanouver them with high elf team.

I kind of feel like the game is optimally played on computer, with all the leveling, dice rolls, amount of teams etc.

Oh no, cannot agree with that at all.
Sure, the computer can do some tedious tasks for you, but you get ample compensation for that over the board just by being able to see your opponents face when his best player fumbles the go-for-it roll 1 tile before touchdown and dies
I noticed now that im playing in auld league which is the league where you can transfer single player teams to mp (?). Have to switch, Do you guys know which one has most players? naggaroth open?
I'm gonna buy it tomorrow, is the legendary edition worth the £30 price tag? Coz if not i'll just grab the normal edition. To get a good hold of what it's like i'm actually watching a let's play of it on youtube. And he's playing normal not blitz with dice rolling and all that. Seems pretty fun.
That, and the versions aren't cross compatible. May as well get the one with more stuff in it.

I would say that it's more streamlined on the computer, but the in-person environment given by tabletop is really fun- injury/death dice rolls are so stressful.
Also, I'm going to go ahead and buy it now. What are the chances of getting a Teamliquid league started? Someone should make one, or at least compile names to see how many we have.
Yeah, we will start fresh. But there's no point in playing a season if there aren't enough people for an 8-man playoff at the end of it. Or at least that's my opinion.
I just bought the game the other day and I'm still learning all the intricacies of it, but I'd definitely love to play in a league. Still trying to look for a race though.
I'd PM whoever has expressed interest in playing in this thread and let them know we're looking to start up. I'd do it but I don't know who has PM'd you and who hasn't.

Saves are nothing. The thing my brother hates the most is my drop pod loaded with CC specced ironclad dread that pops right in the middle of his lines on first turn
But I'm going off topic here so I'll stop.
Back on topic: And what is your feeling on agility being the absolute best stat in BB? I don't think more things (especially important things) in this game depend on any other stat.
I'm going to be busy until the end of the year. I've never played BB or any Warhammer tabletop games, although I've always been interested.
I'd like to join the league but I might not make it for the first season though. I'd really appreciate game write-ups or live reports or a newsletter or whatever. That would definitely help my decision to join.
Also, if you are going to start this first season soon PM me RIGHT AWAY and maybe I'll be persuaded to buy the game... =)
If you have never played : Be sure to read the rulebook before playing. Otherwise you'll just be lost, confused and strategy-less. Maybe get a couple of games in with the AI to get familiar with them, you should be beating the AI in just a few games if not the very first one.
I bought the legendary edition but haven't really played it yet. I'm playing in a league already (orca-cola), but it's just one match a week so I might be able to play in another one fairly regularly as well. PM me if you start a league for sure !
That reminds me, how regular will the games be? We're all pretty busy I'm sure... Also, how long does a game take? Can they be played over the course of days or are they real-time turn-based?
A good timing option for a match is 16 turns of 4 minutes each. That puts the maximum time for a game to about 2 hours, although you don't have to use all the time.
We don't have to use 4 minutes for the league. Actually on most of your turns, you can be done in under 2 minutes easily. It's just that, sometimes, you need the extra time to really think through your options.
I have a few more questions: Is there a Save Replay option for this game? Someone mentioned that our teams will "level up" as we progress through the season. Does that mean if I join Season 2, my team will be at a disadvantage? What about someone who doesn't make it to the tournament and plays less games?

You cant save replay as far as i know. You will level up through season but of course everyone has to use new teams season 2.
I signed up for league now, i suggest we disallow undead.
Replays are autosaved in "my documents/bloodbowl/saves/replays" or "my documents/bloodbowllegendary/saves/replays". They can be replayed in the client by going in single player / load / replay. You can use +/- to make them go faster.
Most leagues use BBmanager, which is a neat external tool to manage leagues. Replays of each match get uploaded, and are parsed on a central server and accessible to all. Apparently, the LE has brought a lot of the stats that could only be found in BB manager inside the actual game, but it still gives us the ability to centralize replays for example.
1. Install BB manager : http://94.23.239.117/BloodBowlManager.ClickOnce/publish.htm 2. Make an account with the same name as your BB account (different password obviously) 3. To upload replays, the easiest is having BBmanager open before playing your match. After playing it, BBmanager will pop a little bubble offering you to submit the game. Select the league, confirm the players names and input the match day and that's it.
Your players will gain experience, and with new levels you can give them skills. As you gain skills on your players your team value will increase. When two teams clash, the one with the lowest value gets "inducements", to spend in various stuff to make the game more equal. It's still an advantage to have the highest value but it's somewhat compensated.
Why disallow undead, Juag? I don't have a bunch of experience against them so I don't really understand if there's some kind of problem with them or what.
I actually signed up with them (though said "Undead maybe" because I hadn't made up my mind yet)

Hm I just see them on top of every leaderboard and it seems to be a race without weakness (contrary to every other race). It's just a suggestion from me, so that not everyone plays undead.
Well, if there are enough races and/or enough players, then might I suggest that only 1 team of each race be allowed to enter? We could implement a random draw or a drafting system to make it fair/interesting.
I guess if so many people are interested in undead, I'll play something else. I would never say to ban them though. They don't have many weaknesses, but they don't really have anything super strong either. Everyone has regeneration, but there are teams where everyone has dodge or block or this or that, and they are all agi3 people without any passers/catchers/etc.
I don't want to pick something someone else did, so I'm curious who is playing what. If we want to do some kind of random team thing to avoid duplicates, I'd be up for that, too, but I think people should be allowed to opt for "brute/speed/stunty/normal" teams so that they at least get something of their "style"
I'm up for Team Drafting if everyone else is. Sounds like it could be fun. Do we all have to be online at the same time for it? If so, then maybe not.
Skirn (friend of mine who should have PM'd you his registration) said he'd be up for Random/Draft, too.
On November 05 2010 09:40 kingjames01 wrote: So do you think that the game could still be balanced if I come in with a new team in Season 2 versus teams who completed Season 1?
Team value counts, but it will go up faster with better skill (more touchdowns, more money, etc.). Some races are pretty tough to play out of the box at the start value, some are stronger in the beginning but get weaker at higher values, some are solid all around. I joined my current league in its season 4 (9 games per season), and it's not really a problem.
I mostly don't care about which team to play. I have some preferrences, but mostly I just suck with a couple of races and would like to avoid them (human, dark elf) and any other would be fine. I haven't really tried the LE races (and I didn't play tabletop or fumbbl).
On November 05 2010 10:23 potatoedoughnut wrote: Drafting is a good idea. It's fun to play a team out of your usual style.
yeah, I think that drafting would create some challenges for players who have mastered their 'favourite' race.

So how many games would our season be? How many races are there? We could have division play, where the teams are separated into groups. Each team plays the other teams in its own division more (eg. twice) than every other team (eg. only once).
That kind of scenario could lead to extra rivalry within the divisions. Also, more attention would given to the success of other teams. Rather than a situation where we're thinking, "So, who do we play this week?" we might be thinking, "If I can beat this person, then maybe I can clinch the last division spot into the playoffs."
Of course, that's highly dependent on the motivation of the organizers and the wishes of the players.
There are 20 teams.. if we can fill at least 16 of them we, division play will be viable. My intentions are to flesh out the league's rules and create a fresh post this weekend.
So if you have any ideas, please voice them! I've never played in a formal league before, so I'm not sure of the intricacies.
What kind of rules are we talking about outside whats already in the rulebook? I know some people are against fouling, but I know I'm not (so long as its not overly excessive to the point where you're just trying to ruin someones day, which I only care about because its a teamliquid league)
Just wondering. Because "draft, standard rules, fresh teams" seems like it's pretty straight forward on the rules :O
Also, how many players are we up to? I didn't think 16 was going to be possible, but if it is, awesome.

What do you mean by "against fouling"? It's like a key feature in BB... What was the name of the game again? Oh, the intros could really give it away!
I think he means intentionally trying to take another team out of league play.
I don't know about you, but if there was playing against some ass whose only goal was to make sure that my players died, thus removing all chances of making the tournament, I'd be pissed. We should have some assurances that this kind of situation isn't commonplace.
I never suggested there should be no fouling. I just think we should keep in mind that we're all here to have fun, and while we'll all be playing to win, if your normal rolls have already caused 5 casualties, it might be ruining the fun for someone else if you go out of your way to make sure they can't field more than 3 players in the next game.
I'm all for fouling, even absurd fouling, but lets just make sure everyone has fun, yes? :O
Going back to an earlier point, I REALLY need to read the manual lol. I've played several games but it makes it so much harder not knowing what you need to be rolling to do certain things like not getting knocked over when 'going for it' etc

Regarding fouling I don't know that we need a strict rule on it. If people are being BM (in any fashion) we can deal with it, but even if your team gets fouled a lot it's unlikely that it will permanently remove a lot of players. And there is compensation for the corresponding lower team value in future games.
Just found this thread, I'm up for some of this! However I havnt played the board game for eons and will suuuuck! ;p Got the legendary edition today as it turns out, if your short on numbers for the first tournie ill be available however.
I just got this game because this thread made me interested. If a leauge starts i'd like to play as well, but i dont really know what i am doing yet lol. btw i call Dwarfs if we go play. Dwarfs rule.
Fouling really is not a problem. Hell the league I am in actually has a reward each season for most players sent off! Do not get attached to your players, they will die or get crippling injuries, deal with it, this is not pokemon Maybe maybe we could say something about fouling on turn 16,but that's really the maximum weight could disallow.
I don't mind getting a random team, but if we have BB newcomers and they get goblins for example, I am afraid they will be disgusted especially if their first game is vs dwarves haha. Actually I don't even see new players handling chaos properly for example. Maybe let the less experienced players choose their team?
Also we should decide if we keep the teams from one season to the next order not. If we are going for the long term, it changes decisions about the roster and the team development. Of course people can always start with a fresh team instead even if we do that.
11 of 20 slots have been taken. Five slots are 'held'. Getting closer!
Okay.
I'm hoping to have everyone signed up/confirmed by Monday so we can get started. The league has been created on BB Manager, so we just need the stragglers to catch up and we'll be ready.
I have decided we're going to use a 'limited draft' system for picking races. I will randomize the coach names and then, in order, they will be presented with 3 race choices. When they choose, I will remove that team and we'll work our way up.
Assuming we don't full all 20 spots, I will likely remove Halflings from the team list. While the Undead may be hard to counter, Halflings can not truly be considered 'competitive'.
Just a note I won't be able to start playing until 15 November since I'm travelling. I'm ok with sitting out until next round/season if you get the players to get going before then.
I'm really tempted to sign up except for one reason: SecureRom.
According to the Steam page it comes with the installation. And I've been reading about people having trouble with it (scanning their pc, slowing it down, etc).
Not that I trust everything I read but I'd like to know if I have to install this stuff to play the game. Is it just to keep track of your installation count? (5 per purchase if I've read it right) Or is there something left behind?
I didn't buy the Dark Elves edition because of it (played a cracked version instead) and I just dont want to go through the same thing we had with Chaos League/StarForce all over again.
I've had absolutely no issues with the Steam version of either DEE or LE. If you're a Blood Bowl fan, you should really pick it up and play. It's such a good game and the games are so smooth compared to the tabletop version.

Yes, one of the problems for new players is getting attached to your players. I used to be the same way. But in leagues, fouling on turn 16 should be okay. In matchmaking, it is kind of a douche move, but in leagues, it is legitimate if you want to eliminate a possible threat in later games.
I would be down to play in the league if it wasn't random. >< I think it is more fun when everyone just picks the team they like. The game is pretty balanced, with of course teams like goblins and halflings being somewhat worse.
I'm pretty firm in my believe that semi-random is the way to go. It gives people choice without the first the players always taking Amazon/Undead/Skaven.

Do you not want multiples of the same team? I guess I don't see the issue as in board game leagues we've almost always had two of the same team (usually dwarf) and no one has really cared. I guess I don't see the problem with letting people choose what they want to play.
From my understanding of turn based blitz vs classic the only differences added to blitz mode are the pre-game training sessions and equipment.
Definitely playing turn based and not real time. Might still have to make the league in blitz mode to have the extended inducements (not sure if this is still the case with LE).
I also think there is no way everyone would take undead skaven or amazon if we let people choose.
16 of 20 slots have been taken. Four slots are 'held'. Getting closer! EDIT: ALL SLOTS HAVE A NAME ON THEM. From this point on, it will be first come first serve. Let that be a warning to all of you 'maybes'. First guys to PM me get main seats.. and I withhold the right to keep people on the 'short list' for if/when players disappear.
1. I have received a formal request to keep Halflings in the team pool.
2. We -will- be using a limited draft format, as outlined below.
Tonight at 12:00 AM (EST), I will generate a random list of coach names and post them here. Anyone to join after this time will be added to the bottom of the list.
The first player on the list will be sent a PM with three team options to choose from. The chosen team will be taken off the list and I will proceed to the next coach. I hope this process will go quickly given that it's the weekend.. but at this time I will not enforce a time limit.
Let's see how it goes I would like to hold a spot for a friend of mine, he reads and follows sc but I don't think he has a tl account yet. He should be here himself later tonight.
I pity anyone who gets Vampires tbh. Maybe it's just my luck but I always spend half of my games as vampires chasing down Thralls to eat, atleast once per turn.

I haven't really given that much thought, yet. Nor even how many matches a week we should play.
I was thinking 2 matches a week, 12 weeks as a baseline OR 2 matches a week, 8 weeks. The shorter seasons will help retain players.
If we wants teams to span over multiple seasons I'm inclined to say two month seasons. Do we want things to be fast and dirty?

Thanks for the answers!
So maybe 16 or 24 matches? We couldn't do that with 20 teams (assuming that we play every team) unless there were separate divisions.
Also, is there such thing as home stadium advantage?
As for starting: I would -love- to start next weekend. I figure we will be figuring out teams and such until Monday-Tuesday. That will give people Wednesday-Friday to prepare some badassery and/or their teams.
First blood will (again, hopefully) drawn on Friday or Saturday. Assuming we can find between 3 and 5 more people.
I think it's 6 AM your time.. but I am posting it at midnight my time so it will be up all day Saturday. I am hoping people can see their spot on the list and hopefully be around sooner or later depending on their spot.
It would be glorious if we can get all of the races picked by Sunday, but I highly doubt it.
Will you need help with the organizational aspect of the league or does BB Manager handle matchmaking? If it doesn't I've put some thought into the setup of the regular season and I can share my work if you want.
KingJames01: I do believe BB Manager relieves me of the work. However, if it does not I have access to a nifty script that allows me to easily generate random seeds.
So I've looked into the BB Manager from their webpage and it doesn't seem to include regular season matchmaking and/or tournament scheduling capabilities. How do other leagues handle that? Let me know if you need help!
I'm going to be at an SC2 LAN that next week on Saturday. I hope there's a little freedom in terms of scheduling games, but I've never done this before so I don't know. Are games locked and required to be played at a certain time on a certain day or do you have a span of time to finish a game before the next round starts?
Looking forward to it, though. Will be checking constantly to see if my name is up for draft!
My idea is allow the players to coordinate games themselves. Each week you will be given two match-ups and will be expected to play those two games.
I'm thinking a 48-hour window is long enough to make contact. i.e. you PM your opponent, and he has to respond to it within two days. Since we are literally spread across the globe, I presume most games will happen during the weekends.
Bare in mind, I have never organized something with such varying play times.. so this style may be completely inefficient.
Vampires are fine and actually competitive (says my expert friend).
Two matches a week can be a little tough to organize. It's not that hard per se to play 2 matches a week for anyone, but playing them at a time that fits both you and your opponent is not necessarily easy. Even more so considering the wide variety of time zones we have here. We can give it a try though.
For the seeding and match schedule, the game client actually takes care of that itself. You will be left with the simple duty of advancing the match day once all matches of a half-week have been played. The problem with the BB client is that you have to play all matches of one day before being able to advance the day, even if both you and your opponents have played their match already. It was supposed to get much better with the LE, but I have not had time to try it yet. I'm going to do so in the next few hours and bring some feedback !
Are there plans to change the interface to manage private leagues? If so, what will be improved? Yes. We have spent a lot of time re-thinking and developing the multiplayer interface. It has been split into several pages for more clarity and better ergonomics. We have also integrated new features for private leagues administrators like: the ability to cancel a game and replay it or even to modify the score of a game.
Will there be some modifications on the online private league system? We have done a lot of changes in this department: • Introducing Commissioners – A league admin can assign Commissioners to help administrate the private league. • Validation - Games need to be validated by a Commissioner once they have been played. • Reset of Matches - Games can be reset by a Commissioner • Set Score - Commissioners can set the score for a match. Awarding someone a win, 2d6 Winnings + 2 MVPs, if one of the coaches could not show up. MNG players will come back after an administered game. • Seeding Manager - If you are not happy with the seeding, you can swap teams around in each section of the competition, i.e. the Division, Group and the Play-off stage. • Participants - And lastly we have upped the cap to a maximum of 140 coaches participating in a Private League. • GUI - Additionally to the above we have changed the GUI for the Lobby, making it easier to find & follow Private Leagues' Standings, Statistics, Calendar, Hall of Fame etc.
Sweeeeeet improvements in LE.
Here is an explanation of the league types :
Championship, with one division each team will play each other once or twice (you can set this up). Best team will win the championship. With more than one division the divisions are in a ranked order. Winner of Division 1 will win the league. The bottom team of each division will be relegated into the next lower and the top teams will be promoted into the next higher division for the following season. However, with the seeding manager you can redistribute teams after each season.
Cup, each team will play each other team in its pool once or twice. Teams will be promoted into the play-off rounds depending on how many spots you set up starting with the best teams of each division. Winner of the play-offs will win the league.
Play-offs, all teams directly start with a knock out rounds. Last team standing is the winner.
Grand Slam, this set up combines Championship and Cup. First, the league plays a Championship season with ranked divisions and promotion/relegation at the end of the season. After this there will be a Cup with the whole league. The results of the Cup season won't count in regard to promotion/relegation spots for the next Championship season.
I'd say we go for championship, with 1 division.
As for the rest of the options, I think we can agree on the default options, with extended inducements added.
18 of 20 slots have been taken. One slot is 'held'. Getting closer! EDIT: ONE OPEN SLOT! From this point on, it will be first come first serve. Let that be a warning to all of you 'maybes'. Like I said, it's probably just my horrible luck with always rolling 1's on Bloodlust
Well a lot of people make the mistake of getting 4-6 vampires and not enough rerolls. So they fail bloodlust a lot. Don't know if that is what you are doing. Starting with 2-3 vampires and 5 rerolls is a solid beginning. Plus vampire teams shouldn't go over 4 vampires (maybe you can find success with 5 but not in my experience). They are actually a pretty decent team, just using things like hypnotic gaze effectively and dealing with bloodlust is hard because you do not have practice with them outside of vampires.
Holy crap can't believe blood bowl is showing up on TL. I've got the old cyanide version and have been playing for awhile. Gonna get LE as soon as I can spare the money (probably not in time for this tournament).
PS: Vampire teams are not competitive, atleast not past 150 tv. Your team is reliant on having several thralls on the field, which isn't a good bet past turn 4 once teams get mighty blow. Vamps never win big tournaments for a reason. =('

Also, will there be any trading teams allowed if someone is forced to choose a team that they really don't want?
I think we should have a reserve pool of teams not picked after 24 hours, and anyone could switch to one of these.
I like the championship model. This way if players drop out the can be replaced and if we cant find replacements that team just leaves WO in remaining games.
I guess we should have a limit on amount of games allowed per week, so that one team doesn't fly away to TV 1800. In my opinion there is a huge advantage to have higher levels and TV, petty cash doesn't make up for it. I say we limit 4 games per week for example. The 2 games per week system could be ok as well, but maybe that should be minimal amount?
The number of games per week is actually a fixed amount if we use the league system. All matchups are defined in advance, and you know who you have to play when. Everyone plays the same number of games, 1 against each opponent.

After probing around with the new league system I have found this to be true! My apologizes, I have never run an online league before.
As for having a 'team pool', that defeats the purpose of playing in a limited draft. Half of the idea is to make whatever you pull work. Don't be so close minded!
As of right now, it looks like we're playing with 18. Which is quite acceptable. Draft seeds incoming in two hours!

Some people enjoy the idea of a draft more than they enjoy picking a singular race. It's not an unfamiliar concept- DOTA, for example, has draft modes, allrandom modes, etc, where players sign up to play without knowing exactly what they're playing with in advance. It's a different way of playing, is all. I for one, love it. It seems you don't, but if you want to play, you'll just have to live with it I think :O You'll get to choose between 3 races- I'm sure you'll find something similar to your race within those choices.
Also, I think Championship mode favours the experienced. (Well, at least at the beginning until people get more games under their belts.) Can I petition for a Cup and/or Grand Slam?
Having a post-season tournament will make a play-off race more fun. Especially if I realize that with the number of games left I cannot chase the leader. Also, a post-season tournament allows for the underdog aspect of competition.
However, if I'm in the minority, then please, feel free to ignore me.

May I ask what advantages you enjoy, with having a draft in place? Anyone here who finds the draft appealing is welcome to answer this question, just wondering what things people like about it.
And yes, I personally feel a random draft is unsuitable for Blood Bowl.
Can I make a suggestion? Everytime that a coach finishes their respective drafting round, they should announce it in the thread. That way coaches who are lower in the drafting order can check up on how fast the draft is going and also roughly estimate how long it will be before it becomes their turn.
I don't get how anyone can like dwarves, atleast in bloodbowl. They are a one trick pony team and almost assuredly the most boring, lame team in the game. They're almost universally despised in the game's community itself.

Well, good luck in the draft! I hope you a team you'll like. =)
I've never played a single game so I don't know anything about the specific races. I hope I get to choose the Undead because I really like Undead-type genres: zombies, necromancers, (zerg, hehe), etc.
Most of those are just listed for being below par teams and therefore more difficult to win with. Chaos and Dark Elf are the exception, but they are harder to play for different reasons.
@Jaug, maybe u could update the first post on the frontpage and copy paste some of the basic info? makes it a bit easier to keep track on as this thread grows...

They're not really OP. Of course you start with a ton of skills and 4 blodgers (block and dodge) off the bat, so they're very strong in the beginning when no one has gained skills (although they are going to cry if their first game is against dwarves). However, on the long term, when opponents start getting mighty blow and tackle on a couple players, and with only 7 armor, they will have a hard time.
I have faith that people will be around today. The list has only been up for nine hours and I was asleep for seven of them.. It -should- be done by tomorrow (..I hope).
If it doesn't make considerable progress today, I will add in a few hour 'window' for people to make their choice. If they can not respond during that window, I will move them down a few spots and keep going.

Sound fair?
Yes, I think either that or send pm to 5 ppl at a time, if same race comes up the one who answers first gets the race.
if the league is first starting in a week or more, i dont see the rush about letting everybody pick teams within an hour, its weekend folks... alot of people are not near a computer, some are sleeping, different time zones etc. so calm down man
Ok I got Chaos/Dwarves/Necromantic, really not the styles I was looking for, but w/e lol, I ended up choosing Chaos Apologies for not replying earlier, I just woke up, stayed up very late, I was expecting to get it before I went to bed, but nevermind
sigh... I've done a bit of research and I still don't know which to choose. I got 3 "advanced" teams: Nurgle, Goblins, Khemri.
I've never played before so I don't really know the differences between these teams. I don't mind a challenge and I'd like to have a team that can still be competitive late in the season. Any thoughts?

I would say nurgle is a pretty easy team to play. It's kind of a bash team.
Goblins are not advanced, they're weak. Khemri got nerfed, still sort of ok I think. Might be trickier to play. Nurgle I'm not too sure, they look good on paper, somewhat similar to Chaos.
Khemri is really bashy, not really a scoring team. You can have 4 strength-5 mummies (which are hard as shit for most teams to knock down) and just cage the ball carrier and run down the clock. Play them if you love killing people.
Goblins are weak, but fun. Don't play them if you have a weak heart- play them if you are capable of laughing when your players die.

Nope, Khemri is a completely nerfed into oblivion team. 2 editions ago they used to be very vicious at low team value with 4 strength 5 players with mighty blow and block access. Now they're just big, but can't hurt anyone or pick up the ball.

And don't forget about laughing when you pass the ball and forget that receiving player has the "no hands" special rule due to his big ass chainsaw or other weapon of mass destruction.

The best is your 60+ SPP, +1 MA, +1AGI Goblin being eaten by your troll on a throw
Maybe you can start PMing multiple people at once? For example, if you roll 1,2,3 for one person, 4,5,6 for the next one and 7,8,9 for another, then we can speed this up. If you roll numbers that are still being waited on such as 10,4,11, then sit on it and wait until the 4,5,6 person picks and reroll the 4 if it gets picked (can't reroll the 4 beforehand because then you're locking up teams and destroying the random factor).
I imagine we could probably have a few people picking at once if it was done this way. Eventually you'd run out of numbers and have to wait but it would be faster than 1 person.

I like this, might save a day or two if were able to catch someone before they go to sleep/work. I was also thinking if we could just post our orders of race selection so that when its our turn you could just grab off the list, but that might be annoying.

Sorry sir, I play necromantic and chaos dwarves (which sadly aren't in LE). Dwarves don't have axes or beer in BB, just boring, repetitive caging and are played by people who are afraid of losing their precious pixels. 8)
I respect elf players because they're not afraid of losing players or playing something different than "cage and move 2 squares a turn"
Lizardmen are one of my favourite team, very fun to play. You're in for a rought start though, with no skills at all on your sauri. With some development, they can become a strong team. Hope for some luck and a +1 agility on a skink and your team power is hugely upgraded. Be prepared to get bashed laughably by elves anyway :D

Don't worry - even the best strategy can fail if you are unlucky with the dice
Yep. U need to play match in period of time u agree in league - for example 1week. And most private leagues with many teams playing in division system. Dont know what system we will play - i think when all will choose teams somone tell what to do .
At the start of the season the game randomly decides the order of the games, so you will now from the beginning which opponents you have to face in which order. You'll play every other team once.
Guys, I believe that after the drafts are finished you could use a separate thread just for the league. It will be easier to track if all the info (brackets and shit) are in the OP.

Far as I know we haven't had any one even over 12 yet, the list has only been up for 59 hours right?
Scheduling will be eazy becouse will be automatic by league system.
Maby lets make coach names list so we can already add them to friends and start playing some practice matches - it should be important for new coaches this more experienced can show them how to play. BB is very strategic game and there is lot of thinks to learn.
By the way, if someone would have any questions regarding the mechanics, skill choices or help in general feel free to hit me. I don't have LE but most things are universal anyway
On November 09 2010 00:52 Zanzabar Haberdasher wrote: Yeah, that is the plan. However, the drafting process is taking a bit longer than I had expected.
Personally I think that people who don't respond within 24 hours should be moved to bottom of list and have to wait to get their pick. I don't know if that is the case for anyone yet though.
I agree....
Also, people who do not reply within 48 hours or so should mb be removed from league. It wouldnt be entierly far fetched that someone just signed up and then forgot about it all together.
Oh cmon now You guys are debating something that's pretty irrelevant. There's only 5 people left that needs to pick their team. I'm sure we'll all have one or two game done by the start of next week
Of course I lose power right before it my turn to pick. Halfling Vampire Khemri, Had too pick Khemri seeing as they're the ones I've been playing as. And also cause they're bad-ass. Who doesn't want a team of ancient Egyptian pharaoh mummies beating the crap out people playing football? I've heard they suck tough. D:
Yeah, we're using LE. Consider yourself the first reserve, but please note: after season one, I will allow all comers. I know there are still a few of you who want to play.
On November 09 2010 05:14 Megelrov wrote: I predict my halfling team Wellfare Wizards to win the hole thing.
I predict your team will be beaten to death and not finish the season.
Dont be so sure. I have Khemri team (very bashy one - 5 mighty blow, 2 piling on players). They played 15+ matches and lost 3 - 1 vs halflings, 1 vs goblins and 1 vs nurgle. So stunty teams can be effective with lots of reroll and substitutes.
Okay guys, we should have all of the final picks in sometime tomorrow. Keep an eye out for the new thread as it will have all of the pertinent information.
Even though Believer doesn't get a pick (sorry!) I'd probably PM him when its his "turn" to make sure he's still playing.
Going to be fun, though! I only have maybe 15 games under my belt and haven't really read a whole lot of resources (other than the rulebook) but I think I'm understanding the game quite well. Now I just have to think of a creative team name and player names O.o. Too many elf cliches to avoid, need to figure out something awesome/funny.

Please make 4 minute turns for the league. Most of the time we can play much faster than that, but once in a game or so, you really need time to think of the best option.
Apart from that, as I said before in the thread, default options are good, but add the extended inducements !

The first season (roughly one month) is going to be capped at 20 players. After the first season, I intend on opening the league to all comers. Information will be posted as I have it retarding next season.
I'd like to join as well, but I can't even win a single game. I've played 3-4 games against medium AI and one game in the Naggaroth league and I can't seem to do very good. What race should I play? I played Wood Elves and Lizardmen but neither of them seemed to be very good.
Wood elves are very hard for beginners to use, lizardmen are actually pretty decent when you learn how to use your skinks. Try a bashy team maybe such as dwarves or chaos, all they need to do is knock everyone out and walk over the line.

You need to get the hang of the game and of the positional play. Have you read the rulebook first ? It's vital to know how hard every action is, what rolls you need to make on the dice.
Try Orcs, or maybe Humans, for your first games. They're easier to play.
Lizardmen are nice but really need to gain some skills to become really effective, and without block and with few rerolls you need to have some experience to know how to plan your turn.
Wood elves are probably the best race or at least top 3, but you need some experience to make them shine as well. There are a ton of choices and decisions every turn, a lot of risk taking and risk management. They're strong, you should try them after you have really grasped the basic game concepts.
I will give you my pick in 2-3 hours or so when I get home from work. Anyway, its not like the last guy will have very much to chose from except what is left :o
As for the turn time, I can play most of my turns in under a minute. Sometimes though, the position is more complex and the actions are absolutely critical. Not giving a bit more time to think just reduces the strategy quality.

Both teams are good but very different. If u want i can help u with basics of the game. Just add me to friends and pm me (lorgoth in game) or pm me here. U should read some basic strategy at site few times posting here http://bbtactics.com/ . And for sure it will take some time to be good in this game becouse its complicated like chess +luck factor . For sure it will be better and better with time just the same like with sc2.
For start good races are orcs, humans, undead. They start with some specialized skills and are quite easy to play. For start setup try read cyanide forum or bbtactics. For sure min 3 rr are needed when u start with the game.

One important think. Some players have problems with multiplayer connection. If u have this problem u need to open 2 ports in your router. Im posting it becouse i had this problem and it solved it:
"Connection problems in multiplayer If you get connection problems during an online game with another player (Peer 2 Peer), you must configure the router of your DSL/Cable modem in order to access to the Blood Bowl server through the opening and forwarding the ports 30710 (port used by the server) and 16962 (to host a game) in UDP. "

Man great record with nurse. 10/0/0 - full respect - we have gosu in our league Fear the Rats.
Just took the first loss to a human team. He got very lucky on the dice, especially on the armor rolls, but played well, so whatever. Fortunately not too much damage to the team, just one dead level 2 lineman.
Coming tonight! I'm still waiting on two confirmations, league creation and then of course writing the official thread up. Expect to see it all when I get home from work.
I sent the last ~8 invites in pairs, as suggested by several people in the thread.

I strongly disagree. A big draw of the game is random acts of violence, in my opinion. There is nothing morally gray about possibly killing an opponent team mate, given that he might kill you the next time you two play.

The reason why I support it is simply because I think people should try to win games as long as it is possible in any theoretical way. In other words, if you are down 0-2 and its turn 12 try to make something happen. Don't just bash and foul players. That is what I have a problem with, I dislike it. One way to at least make players try is to make it no foul 16.
I suggest a irc channel as source of contact. At least it could be part of it. I'm starting #TLBB on quakenet. Join via webchat if you want: http://webchat.quakenet.org/
I was going to suggest an IRC channel as well, good idea. It will make it that much easier to arrange matches if all coaches can find each other easily.

The name of the game is Blood Bowl. It's very much in spirit to foul and do all kinds of goofy things that aren't necessarily about winning or points. And fouling is also about winning. It potentially takes a player out for your next encounter or makes your next match harder. It also means you need to think about your players. You don't want to send that high SPP wardancer off on their own to get gang fouled into oblivion.

In privat leagues its normal to faul in turn 16. So its normal to do it. Rules like no faul in turn 16 are stupid. Its BLOODblow so more blood for blood god.
Yeah I have not played BB much but from what I've been reading fouling seems fine at any point in the game. If i'm losing a game, and can kill a player so I wont have to see him in the playoffs it seems like i should be able too. btw from my understanding u can loose all your players in BB right? What happens if you can't play anymore? That team just becomes a free win?
If you can not start a game fielding 11 players, I do believe you get journeymen. They are more or less free temporary players that you can hire after the game for normal price.
If you're unable to field 11 players for a game (after the first) you are given "freebooters" to fill your team slots up to 11. These players are always the player listed as 0-16 in the number you can have and never any special positions. The down side to this is they all come with the Loner skill. If you have the money at the end of the game and want to buy one of them, say because they earned SPP during the game, you are given the option to. I hear it's bugged though that the option to buy a freeboot player is given before winnings so you pretty much won't have the money if you couldn't afford a player before hand anyway...
IRC channel is now up and running. I would suggest everyone to download irc and put channel #tlbb on autojoin. The program does not disturb the computer in no way, it's like msn messenger lite.
I understand I was voted down with the no foul turn 16, that's fine for me.
did BB just get a patch or something? I tryed to join the battle.net thing they have, and it tells me my version is not supported now? I was able to join yesterday too.

General piece of advice, especially for new players : when a match starts hit both "g" and "n" once. The first one will display a grid, the second one will put the type of each player above its head.
While I find turn 16 fouls in public matchmaking games to be incredibly BM, this league isn't a public matchmaking game.
By fouling that guy, you stand to weaken your opponent's team and hurt his playoff chances. And if you should meet him in the playoffs, he might be slightly weaker.
Then again, if you're the Dwarves playing against Amazons, it's probably in your best interest to not smash them up too badly, you'd kinda like to play them in the playoffs, after all.
My apologies gentleman but I am afraid I am going to have to depart from this tourney for now. I don't believe I have the time to put what I want into it, I feel i'd just be wasting everyones time. I will be keeping an eye on the season though and may join in a later one.
It's sad that Gruv had to depart, but I'm sure there will be no issue in finding a player willing to roll with the Wood Elves from our reserve list. Sent out the first PM regarding it.
I thought this may as well be the best place to ask. I have found a rare moment to play the game. Just single player campaign, thought i'd go Wood Elves as that's what I rolled here and see how I could do. I do the start up so ya know create team, buy players etc etc. When I want to play my first match, the game crashes and kicks me back to windows.
Any ideas anyone? I've got the LE edition on steam if that helps.
How true to the tabletop version is this game? I saw the -75% Steam deal for Blood Bowl this weekend and am considering purchasing it.
I never played tabletop Blood Bowl but I usually found Specialist Games such as Mordheim and Warhammer Quest to be more interesting than vanilla. (4th-6th Edition are what I played)
The problem I usually encounter is that developers tend take the Warhammer IP and do whatever they want with it, bastardizing the lore or mechanics in the process. In fact, the last Warhammer videogames I enjoyed were Dark Omen and 40k: Chaos Gate, which weren't exactly faithful to any rulebook themselves.
I have few friends interested in anything related to Warhammer, so the multiplayer component means little to me unless I find the courage to join the TL Blood Bowl tournaments and get wiped completely. Is Blood Bowl: LE still worth purchasing, with this in mind?
As an aside, will this game function on a P4 + mx440 PC? (A friend's, not my own)
Its basically exactly the same as the tabletop version, I believe its missing 3 of the more recent races but everything else is there as far as I know, and I wouldn't worry about getting wrecked too hard in the TL league, there are a fair few new players and everyone is willing to help people out and give tips.
I just bought this game and I'm downloading it atm. Are there any good beginner's guides around so that I can learn the game relatively quick? Anything posted here on TL perhaps?

Thanks.
This should run on most stuff, if you turn the settings down it's pretty bare.
Also, it's as close to the tabletop as any game will get. If you play in turn based mode, though I've only played the tabletop like twice, I'm pretty certain it's the exact same. Same rules and so on.
you dont even need to know the rules just the basic ideas, eventualy it becomes second nature
jsut try to avoid as many dice rolls as posibble, nuffle is a cruel master.
And if i comes down to it pick a bashy army and just cage your way through anything, lizardmen work well for this as you can have 4 strength 4 saurus and a kroxigor as well as high agility dodging skinks which can break out of your cage with a movement of 8 if the opportunity presents itself for a touchdown.
Recently bought this game in the Steam summer sale.
I'm really impressed by the game so far. It's a very deep strategy game but at the same time so gloriously random. I've been practicing with a bro the last couple of days and just played and won my first game in the auld league. Considering the games release date there's still a surprisingly large amount of people online whenever I've checked. It was also really easy to get an understanding for the rules by playing or watching people play on youtube. I only skimmed over the rulebook and then only went back to doublecheck.
Since this game has been on sale I thought maybe some of you have picked this up (again) and hope to maybe spark some interest in it again cause I'm having a really great time with it.
Skaven are currently my most played team out of maybe two dozen games, but I plan on trying out multiple others. I really enjoy their ability to turn around the game on a whim and produce touchdowns out of nowhere.
So, anyone who recently bought the game, share your stories and opinions.
I played a few games on a friends account and were disappointed. The way your team progresses and how the community works felt subpar to fumbbl IMO, which is not only free but better.

What would make it better apart from having access to the 4 newest races?

It was some time since I played Blood bowl, both the pcgame or on fumbbl.com so I might be wrong. But my feeling was that tools for playing in leagues or tournaments and activity in such were low. I had expected the game to have such things built-in and on at least the same level as the fan-made alternative. Statistics and player rankings etc. were also not available in any easy way. All of these things are important to me, while graphics are not.
I was a bit disappointed and didn't play it so much, so a disclaimer on my opinion though
the Chaos Edition came out days ago and I updated my Dark Elves Edition to it (10 bucks yay!)
So much teams to choose and the matches are now easy to find via matchmaking (unlike the DE edition) , the only issue being that my wood elves are getting stomped in the ground by chaos dwarves and nurgle every match lol.
you should be able to switch them out during your set-up phase
In the upper right of the screen will be a list of players currenty not on the pitch. click on one of them and then on a player on the pitch to swap them

I had 13 players on the team, could switch all players in and out except for my thrower.
Had the problem for several games, but it disappeared when I bought a new player, really wierd.
