Bloodstained Mire will stop being legal in Standard when Khans rotates out. An expedition Bloodstained Mire is part of Zendikar Expeditions and not BFZ and as such does not affect Standard legality. And yes all cards with the same name are considered the same, so an Onslaught Bloodstained Mire is just as legal as a Khans one or an Expedition.

Thanks guys for clearing that up. This is the first time I've encountered cards I can draft but not use in standard :p

Otherwise Power 9 being legal would have done silly things to that Standard format.
EDIT: Apparently the "Priceless Treasures" weren't even legal in Limited. Interesting, though I guess that also makes sense.

Zendikar Expeditions cards appearing in Battle for Zendikar booster packs are playable in any Limited event using those booster packs. In a Sealed Deck tournament, those cards are part of your card pool. In a Booster Draft tournament, you must draft those cards for them to be included in your card pool.
However, Zendikar Expeditions cards are not legal in any Constructed format the cards weren't legal in before. Appearing in Battle for Zendikar booster packs does not make them legal in Standard. http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/battle-zendikar-release-notes-2015-09-23

Very new player here, I got the origins deckbuilder toolkit and fat pack along with a 36 booster bfz thing because I figured I'd start with standard since there's less cards to learn about even if it rotates a bit every 3 months or whatever and I wanted to try playing around with a couple styles to figure out what I like before committing. Anyway, I'd like to know what the best way to progress from here is - I was planning on making a couple decks with help from a friend and playing around with them and then probably getting singles working towards whatever deck seems the most fun. I got one of the zendikar expedition lands thats apparently sells for like $200 so should I just sell that and use it to fund a deck or something? Or maybe use half of it on singles and the other half on a 36 booster pack for the january block? I have absolutely no point of reference here so I'm really at a loss as to how I should be proceeding.

Go to your locals and ask for 80% store credit to fund a deck. I've given up to 90% store credit for polluted/scalding/misty.
Edit: So shit, ask for 90%, and then accept anything down to 80.

In any other Standard season $200 could definitely buy you into Standard, but in the current season, with the manabases as they are that's a little questionable.
Now isn't the greatest time to get into Standard because of how expensive certain cards make it, but things should get better in a few months when Khans of Tarkir rotates out of Standard and takes certain expensive cards with it, and that may be a much better time to explore the format on a budget.
For now, I'd just say focus on learning the game and having fun. Build some decks with what you've got and see how they play against each other. If you've got uncracked packs, look into playing Draft or Sealed with them, and if you don't, that's fine.
In general, I feel that Sealed is one of the best ways for new players to learn Magic because it distills the game down to the smallest possible subset of cards to learn, letting you focus on learning the *game* without worrying too much about learning the *cards*. This is important because it's really hard to approach any constructed format without a solid understanding of general concepts of play (tempo, card advantage, etc.). Definitely look into playing in the Oath of the Gatewatch prerelease if you can, because prereleases tend to be great value and are pretty accessible because there isn't a massive card pool you need to know (and for the cards that are there, most of them are new to everyone anyway).
If you want to get a feel for Standard, play some games on XMage or Cockatrice (or proxy a deck if friends/players at your LGS are amenable to playing casual games with proxies), and definitely do this before buying into any deck, because dropping several hundred dollars on a deck is a significant amount of money that you absolutely don't want to spend without first being sure you like how the deck plays.

That sounds reasonable. I was legend without a *ton* of time investment when I used to play hearthstone so I know general card game concepts like that, but the specifics of magic are definitely a lot more complex and the whole priority/stack thing is pretty interesting. Sadly right now I have to work on Friday nights so I can't go to FNM unless I get out early for whatever reason, but there are stores near me that do drafts and other stuff on days I have off so I'll try to go to those. I recently moved from Chicago to West Palm Beach in FL so I don't really know anyone locally but hopefully there will be some cool people around here. Thanks for the ideas! Do you know of any other online mtg communities that would be willing to help a new person with the game? It's pretty daunting to read the discussions in most places I've looked because everyone just brings up random ass cards and refers to everything by name and it just gets confusing really fast.

I`d recommend sealed over drafts if any of your LGS do those, drafts can be quite complex at times, but unfortuantely from what I`ve seen most stores do drafts most/all the time because people like that more due to its complexity
|
Honestly more of my customers like sealed, but it's $12 vs $21 entry that kills it (though that's with 1 pack per person prize draft)
|
Prereleases are Sealed though, which is part of why I recommend them for new players.
It's kind of sad that Sealed gets glossed over because it's not that popular among experienced players. It's great for new players because you can get a lot of play out of a very small investment (most Sealed pools can build multiple decks), and it doesn't have a huge knowledge barrier since you just need to read the cards in front of you (though to really maser Sealed, you still need to know the set as a whole).

Sealed events are so good. IMO they are the best format. Great fun, great to learn.
Bit more costly than drafts, but prerelease is worth it.

Missed your edit.
The MagicTCG reddit and the MTGSalvation forums are probably the de facto discussion hubs for casual level play. I don't really frequent either of them though, so I wouldn't know how helpful they are for new players.

reddit is really helpful for new players.

I read their sidebar thing but it didnt really say anything other than basic game mechanics and "go to local store"

i think searching keywords like "new player" and stuff will give good threads

Could be a weird change if they make too many cards require colorless mana, but I'm hoping they strike a good balance going forward. Regardless, hyped. They're said that this is something they'll use sparingly. I assume that means it'll be sort of like hybrid and appear from time to time. I'm interested in knowing how hard they'll push these colorless cards, since most decks in modern and legacy would need to change their manabases to play them. If that happens I wonder if painlands and filterlands will increase in price. Any deck in legacy that is looking to play kozi will already have the mana base to do it (post, MUD) or isn't looking to actually cast it. Although I don't know if any of those decks even want to be playing kozi with such great alternatives. Maybe MUD, but even then... He is kinda interesting though as he is likely to draw a shitload of cards and if he could create a meaningful coumterwall that would usually be game and worth trying in decks like tron in modern and mud in legacy, but i think he should have been cheaper to compete with the alternatives especially as it does not deal with bad boardstates like the other options, its also kinda akward that you are unlikely to be able to counter swords to plowshares.

WotC had a great opportunity to change their policy on proxies and actively chose not to change it. I'm glad people are angry about it. This is what should happen all the time when your game caters toward collectors at the expense of players. Unfortunately, Mr. Rosewater and the marketing team are experts at exploitsmanship and dodged drama like gods. Could have used a controversy like this 10 years ago though.

I am really not liking some of the decisions wizards has been making as of late (spoiler drama, judge drama and now proxy drama).
Will attend one Oath pre-release and most likely one release event, but that will be purely because of the social aspect.
