I don't have many cards, but I just tried to make a deck. What are the obvious flaws with this deck? Something that I can easily fix?

http://www.mtgvault.com/arnstein/decks/first-deck/

Since it's a budget deck here are the things that come to mind:
  1. Unless you're playing a control deck that has to hit all of its land drops or you've got like 8-drops you want to be landing consistently, 28 lands is WAY too much. Generally most decks will run around 24 lands. Especially when you have Basic Landcycling cards. All you're going to do is draw loads of lands and no gas.
  2. You have Domain cards but you're only running two land types. It may be more efficient to other play cards that have similar effects since Domain cards generally assume you'll have many land types and are costed as such so you could find other cards that do the same but for cheaper, or the same cost but more powerful effects.
  3. What kind of decks are you facing? It's hard to say what power level changes to make if all I'm doing is suggesting things way out of your budget and also way more powerful than what your playgroup uses.
  4. If you need a way to quickly focus the deck, you could put in a lot of one-drop mana producing creatures like Avacyn's Pilgrim, Brids of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Arbour Elves, etc. which will allow you to accelerate your plays. Then add in more large fatty creatures that are hard to remove or have powerful effects. Are you a Timmy player? If not, then what kind of deck do you want to be running?

Wow, you guys are crazy! Long and detailed responses! Thanks a lot!

I used to play this game when I was touring as a musician, it always made the trips much more fun, but I haven't played it for years now. I never had any fancy cards, and was never any good at it, but after watching the Magic stream earlier today, I wanted to play again!
I only have 5 plains lands, so I thought terramorphic expanse would help me find them easier!

I will read the posts a few more times and try to learn a bit from them, but right now I'm headed out for barcraft IEM finals :D

Except for the cards in the deck, I only have:
4x Rampant Growth
Beacon Behemoth
Blanchwood Armor
2x Spined Wurm
Copper Myr
Shard Convergence
Rupture Spire
Mana Cylix
Manaforce Mace
Trigon of Rage
Accorder's Shield
Iron Myr
2x Kaleidostone
Darklit Gargoly
Ember Weaver

Which ones should I switch into my deck?

Not at all. The deck went 12-2 in games(excluding mirrors) and dominated decks that people thought were bad matchups.

I have never played constructed before (save for casual with friends) but I was thinking about participating in game day. I have at least 1-2 of every standard card except for a couple of the theros cards. I know if I try building decks just based off of my own logic it is going to get destroyed by the good decks, but if I try to lookup one of the decks that are solid currently they are going to require 4x of some cards that I don't have 4 of, and I'll need to buy some cards real quick which I don't plan on doing.

I'm not sure what I should do!

I won't have an opportunity to do that by this weekend. Also, I generally don't like to get rid of good cards because I use them for constructing fun casual decks.

if you don't like trading, your only option is to buy... I don't like buy, so I aggressively trade stuff away to get what I need (like showing up to events 30 minutes early with no intention of playing, just to trade).

If you don't have a group of friends, find a good local community (try using the Wizards Store Locator to find one and see which community you like the most) and play with them. A lot of people like playing the Standard and Limited (aka Draft) formats and those are probably worth looking into. Playing Draft is a nice way to build a good collection of cards while also learning about the new mechanics, interactions, rules. It also helps teach thing like how to judge and value cards.

Ah the bane of us all. If you're intent on not net-decking, come up with a list of everything you have, and then what you expect people locally to be playing. Then figure out what those decks are weak to and build around that plan. I think someone earlier was talking about Golgari Charm being good? Maybe a Rock variant might be decent.

I guess I need to do some reading up on standard decks for a little while. What are the top 1-2 websites for research this, if there are any? I will put some time and thought into this before I start trying to build a deck.... but I will do it only with the cards I have! It will be that much more rewarding if I manage to win some matches.

These 5 websites are probably the best source for information on magic:

I don't have money to play Magic on a competitive level, but I have a friend I can play against!

I updated my deck now, check it out:
http://www.mtgvault.com/arnstein/decks/first-deck/

I'm thinking of finding some people at my university that will give me plains cards, so I can add 2-3 more of those, if you think that's a good idea. If it's like Pokemon, players will have way too many land cards, and be really annoyed by them

But why isn't this deck allowed in standard and extended play? What's the rules for that?

Standard is 2 most recent blocks and most recent core set. The deck you made has old cards from many blocks ago.

Hm. Didn't have a long look at the deck, but cutting 3 Forests to put back in the Terramorphic Expanses is probably a good idea, just so you can make sure you can find a Plains when you need one. Reducing the change of getting mana screwed is always good!

Each format of Magic has a defined card pool that people can use.
  • Limited: All the cards you use are from drafting.
  • Standard: Only cards from the most recent 2 sets (Thereos and Return to Ravnica Block) and the most recent core set (M14) are allowed. When a new set is released, the sets "rotate" and the most recent set replaces the oldest set. In this case, when Thereos was released it replaced the Innistrad Set. If for example, a card is reprinted in Thereos, you can use older versions of that card since they're the same but with different art.
  • Modern: All cards from sets released since (and including) Mirrodin and M8 are legal except for specific cards that are on a banlist. Or, anything that's printed in the new card art style. Again, reprints of cards are allowed even if they're in the old style of cards. However, cards released in special packs like the Duel Decks are not allowed since they're just stand-alone products, except if they're in a Modern Legal set (aka it's just a reprint).
  • EDH/Commander: A casual format designed for people to use whatever cards they want and just have fun in a (normally) not super competitive environment. The idea is you have a Legendary Creature (the commander) you base you deck around and people often create very thematic decks (e.g. a Legendary Angel Commander and with Angel cards). You can find the rules here. There are special cards printed only for Commander use. These are NOT allowed in Standard or Modern.
  • Legacy: Almost every card ever printed is allowed except for cards specifically on a ban list, such as the Power Nine. Special cards like from Commander are allowed.
  • Vintage: Almost anything goes but cards like the Power Nine (Black Lotus, etc.) are restricted. Basically every using the most broken cards ever. But you'll likely never play this format since the decks cost about as much as a house.

So I played some of the match ups, the Esper match up is terrible for MonoU if there's removal in the Esper's opening hands. It's closer than what was originally thought, but based on the matches, it seems like GWT got somewhat unlucky.

The deck is fine, but I don't think it's great, it struggled mightily against some of the RG decks out there.

Also tried GWT's deck, hated it, the mana base is so ass that I am not even attempting justifying dropping the Mutavaults for what I want out of Black.

Edit:

So I got called lucky when I was stuck on 5 lands for most of the game and he peels 2 creatures to kill my Jace (guess who ended up winning)...whats the normal moniker given to the people who do that? Because I usually call them dumpsters.
Get it by your hands...

So in your previous posts you praise wafotapa for such an amazing list and running 4 hero's downfall 4 doomblade then you play it and go "it sucks" black isn't worth it. I understand changing your opinion once you've played it but then you shouldn't make such strong statements in the first place without having played it.

No, He's saying he hates the way the mana base is layed out and would rather have access to Mutavaults in his UW build.

Edit: this is the same way I'm looking at BWR right now. I love the deck and how it play but the mana is so ass that I constantly want to cut down to RW, BW or BR midrange but have no idea which would be more beneficial.
