They have the best matchup by far against post.

For me, it'll be the last 6 months of Drownyard activations on your end of turn, regretting playing Humanimator (it's a sweet deck, just not when I played it) when I had the metagame by the proverbial balls and also when the mana base was pretty terrible, wishing that there will be a time in the upcoming months where I can play standard Delver without feeling like a dirty whore or a worthless peasant. The reason I bring this up now is that honestly, block constructed is more interesting than the last 6 months of standard where decks get hammered out, match ups get hammered out, creativity is at an all time high quickly followed by an all time low. Although, as a control player, I guess I should be jumping for joy because usually this is the best time to be playing a typical control deck.

I predict that we'll see a cheap, good spell reprinted in M14 (like Lightning Bolt) along with a good, cheap cycling card (Preordain, Ponder, maybe even actual Brainstorm reprint) and for 3 months the metagame will be full of nothing but UWR Delver decks, as the boogeyman comes back one final time to haunt us. My biggest regret is not sticking with my gut and staying with Reanimator from the start of RTR, as it's been probably the most consistent deck since RTR started.

Far, far more interesting set than RTR/GTC, and unless Dragon's Maze pulls out something crazy, I'm really going to miss it. Hell, more than half my deck will phase out come october :/ Welcome to standard, where you have to think about your cards a year ahead of time. ISD was one of the sweetest draft blocks and its unfortunate you missed it while building up your collection. Heres to Theros not turning out like ass.

Don't think it will, cards that never go down in price after standard rotation are Legacy/Modern staples and EDH common offenders. Some exceptions are those that drop a little immediately after rotation, but that's usually for stuff in EDH. Think about All is Dust for EDH, I bought one for 10 dollars right after rotation and then flipped it for 14, now that card is like 16-17 and probably going to go even higher to 20+ as it's unlikely to be reprinted. Lily falls into the Legacy/Modern category, it's the only card I ever purchased knowingly for above market value and opened another one. Now she's like back to how much I bought her for at arguably her highest point (50 bucks). I don't see her going down as she's the only viable 3 drop walker in Modern and Legacy since Blue is so neutered in the former and UBx just plays so well in the latter. That card won't go down unless they introduce some kind of super discard hoser for those formats. 3-Jace doesn't hold a candle to her. You can attempt to see if she drops (right after rotation), but highly unlikely unless Black becomes unpopular in Legacy or Modern. Anyways for my speculative cards (for what it's worth), Huntmaster of the Fells will hold or go up in value because that's the RG Solemn Simulacrum with more difficult reprint requirements being a flip card; Terminus, short print set, underdrafted due to how shitty AVR was for limited, mild implications for both EDH and Legacy; then my personal little card I have been amassing...Lingering Souls...because Spectral Procession is a little under 5 bucks and this card is arguably better, also it helps when R&D is on record to admitting that the card is a mistake. Edit: You should see if you can pick up Lilys right after rotation through trades when people start playing and start opening random packs. Also ISD packs and boxes are worth the investment, people loved the set for limited, and it's not like the set itself was bad value, Lily at mythic, Snapcaster at rare, enemy colored lands for EDH trades along with the non-basic land cycle in the block (Kessig/Gavony the best imo), Delver/Invisible Stalker at common/uncommon.

The deck: + Show Spoiler + 4 ogre jailbreaker 1 seraph of dawn 4 basillica guard 4 basillica screecher 4 kingping's pet 4 syndic of tythes 4 oblivion ring 4 stab wound 2 tragic slip 1 victim of night 2 Altar's reap 3 sign in blood 2 haunted fengraf 4 orzhov guildgate 4 evolving wilds 7 swamp 6 plains board: 2 aerial maneuver 2 pacifism 2 smite 1 victim of night 3 devour flesh 4 erase 1 keening aparition This is a copy of the orzhov deck listed in the article linked earlier in the thread - http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/silvestri-says-modern-wrap-up/ . I made a few modifications - I didn't really like the regenerators because leaving mana up for it seems pretty counter intuitive as I should be using all leftover mana on extorts. I added fengrafs because I figured they would be giving me a free extort trigger late game and most of my spells had colorless symbols it can pay for. Also to note - there is only 1 seraph of dawn and 2 tragic slips because I couldn't get my hands on any more. Very simplified match summary: R1 extort > mono black R2 extort > bump in the night R3 extort > archeomancer + bloodhunter bat + ghostly flicker R4 devour flesh > hexproof Besides R4, the matches were incredibly grindy. Especially r3 which took 10 turns for me to take him from 12 to death. I could do a more detailed writeup but I'm not sure how much I remember. Personal takeaway: 10 packs Keeping track of life totals while extorting every turn is non trivial How much I like playing grindy decks I need to play faster if I keep playing grindy decks My deck can't win against enchant decks preboard

My cousin is just at the age where I think he could pick up Magic. I went to build him two common learning decks from my bulk, and I realized that the only things I could use were M12/13, the few French Vanilla creatures, and maybe 3 spells per color. You can't teach a brand new (young) player Extort, Evolve, Bloodrush, Scavenge, Cipher, Detain, Populate. Unleash is iffy (when explaining attacking and blocking, saying "This guy can't block but he's stronger" doesn't make sense), Overload and Battalion are the only ones that are straightforward enough to be explained in the first couple sittings. I ended up making a Boros "Battallion" deck with Skyjeks and Warmind Infantry, Ember Beasts, Assault Griffins, and Cobblebrutes, along with Madcap Skills, Searing Spears, and Muggings, while I played a Gb "Golgari"' with a single Terrus Wurm as the only scavenge, mostly just running French Vanilla, with Stab Wounds and Titanic Growth (all my giants were missing... haha). We played one game to teach him the basics, and by the end of it he had tapping, paying for mana, and attacking down reasonably well - still has trouble figuring out how blocking works though. I'm gonna take him to FNM in the 5th, but I really need to get him an M13 fat pack or something (yeah yeah M14 but its so far away)

But yeah, if you are new to the game or trying to introduce new players to it, especially younger people, you start with the Planeswalker game or the starter decks from a Core set.
