My first set was Invasion, so the first Pro Tour I followed was PT Chicago. Armadillo cloak up the Rith Kibler!

If that is the case, I am afraid that YuGiOh! > MtG because you don't have to constantly buy new cards JUST to play competitively. 1. Standard might be most popular but there are many modern and legacy tourneys that are becoming very popular. If you don't want to keep buying new cards. Make a modern or legacy deck. 2. Standard is CHEAPER than older formats. Buying the new cards is generally cheaper than trying to get cards that aren't printed anymore. 3. I don't see how you can expect to stay competitive in any card game without buying more cards... New cards and strategies are always going to come out that you will have to adapt to. If you can just play 1 deck forever and always do well with it, that is incredibly boring and a stale environment. Can I win yugioh tourneys with my dark magician deck I bought 10 years ago? Hopefully Finkel and Kibler both top8. Would be such an epic top8. Is Finkel still donating his winnings to his charity?

In YGO, you maybe needed to made moderation of one or two cards for strategical deviations but nothing extreme.

I've tried reading the faq's and stuff on the site but still no better off really and they seem pretty dated anyway. They say to keep your booster pack and event tickets, but for what exactly? Use your event tickets to buy cards and build a deck you like. You can buy cards for tix from bots in the marketplace. You can also sell your booster pack to a bot for more credit (unless you got that pack of gold bordered cards, i'm not sure you can sell that). If you are new to magic in general, I would suggest spending some time investigating the different formats and decks before putting one together yourself.

If you are new to magic in general, I would suggest spending some time investigating the different formats and decks before putting one together yourself. It also really just depends on what your goal is, if you don't really have much money you want to put into the game yet until your sure, use those gold cards to play planeswalker for awhile if your a true beginner, it's basically duels of the planeswalker cards where you get to build your own deck. All the constructed formats cost $ to play in and enter, and the cards are very expensive as well, and limited is expensive as well just in a different way. Depending on how good you are you can recoup your investment/costs, but it takes time, patience, and $ to get there. On Sundays they have Phantom sealed events/drafts for 2 tix, I suggest those for fun if your really new and want to try playing in some tournaments. It's 2 tix to play, and there are prizes, and you don't need a deck to play since it's a limited event(you don't keep the cards you open cause it's phantom though, only the prizes you win). Today's was at 10;00am pacific standard time. You can also find player run constructed events with prizes/fun formats and free entries, but keep in mind some of the formats are very expensive when you consider the cards being used, most players are running cheap fun decks in these tournaments, I haven't really played in these as I play in the official daily events/premier events mostly but they are an option for playing on the cheap, especially if your new. http://community.wizards.com/go/forum/view/75846/135082/Magic_Online_Player_Run_Events There should be a calendar and threads where you can get info on each event. Honestly I don't think Planeswalker cards will hold your interest very long, especially if your a competitive player, but even for casual players, the card pool is small and boring, but it's good to get a feel for Magic Online. The next step imo is to decide if you want to invest into a constructed format, you can try pauper, It's not as cheap as it used to be, but depending on what deck you choose to play you can build it pretty cheap. I think goblins without a sideboard isn't that bad, maybe 8 dollars, and if you want to make the full investment of pyroblasts and gorilla shamans maybe 25$ i don't know. Pauper isn't that fun to me personally, but some people do have fun playing it. The second cheapest format is usually block constructed, with a new set coming in, there might be a cheap deck that doesn't use mythics around, keep an eye out. The UR stalker deck and WR humans deck that did well when INS was the only set in the block, had no mythic rares and could both be bought very cheaply. If you get a good block deck and win with it your able to build up your collection for next rotation of standard, that's how I started on Magic Online with ALA block constructed. If your a fan of limited and your on Magic Online to play limited, then your best bet starting is probably swiss drafts. If your an experienced drafter than 8-4 drafts are probably more your style.. but if your experienced in the game you can ignore what I've said. For sealed, the Sealed daily events and premier events are the best value there. I hate sealed, but you can always get lucky . I would try not to buy random cards and spend all of your $ right away, try to have a plan.. figure out your budget and what your goal is(play constructed tournaments, play casually in the casual room, play in fun player run events, etc) . If you buy things you don't need you end up selling them back at a loss and your money disappears.
