why to a thief? it will be a long time before you get use any item, and unless you abuse cheese strats ToB will be very hard. unless you want the challenge of course
General tips for soloruns. once you dual-class , you wont have your kensai abilities until you reach level 13 as your second class. this is the hardest part of the playtrough since being a level 1 mage or thief really sucks. the quests you do as kensai in the beginning , save the final conversation and the experience reward until youve dualed. you can do this with the maevar-thief guild quest , the murder in the bridge district ,the copper coronet quest and the circus quest.
plan what kind of equipment you want to end up with , but dual wield is a must because it has the strongest damage output. longswords , maces , hammers and katanas are good choices (unless you want to abuse slings).
Save enough money so you can buy Baldurans Shield at the special merchant in waukeens promenade. without the reflect beholders can be a bitch to deal with. and get lilacor , its one of the better weapons you can get early. make sure you dont end up with to little intellegence at character chreation , otherwise Mindflayers can easily one shot you (if you dual mage , intellegence 18 is a must anyway)

another thing is really ramping up the magic resistance. with 80+ magic resistance the game mostly becomes a cakewalk. Ring of Gaxx, the Human Skin armor , the amluet of magic resistance and Carsomyr are your friends. dont forget to take the correct tear of bhaal for + 5 additional magic resistance , and one combination on the machine of lum in watchers keep also gives +5 permanent.

You will probably be instant lvl 9 or so.

Or just be a monk and start with high end resistance already.

Any very good mod you guys recommend for BG EE (and BG2 EE) later.

Started to play a lilbit of BG2 and Fallout Tactics again. From what i remember it was as hard as BG2. In fact it's really more difficult :p
I love those old games

I started a Kensai on BG1 that I plan to dual to mage at level 13 (which will be in BG2 I guess?). I wasn't thinking straight when I chose the proficiencies, and got 2 in Long Swords and 2 in Katanas. Now there are decent weapons in both categories, but how will this character hold up in close combat at later stages?
Strength 18/93, Const 15, Dex ?? (just the lowest without any penalties, Wisdom 10, Intelligence 18, Charisma 10

pretty missskilled, you dont need that much strength since there is an abbundance of strength boosting items you can wear. shouldve rather maxed dex , the armour bonus is quite significant early to mid game. you can also minimize charisma , because the ring of human influence is easy to obtain.

there are decent weapons of those categories in the late game , allthough i like hammers, flails , and two handed swords more.

the enhanced edition has issues with mod support, but in general , you should check out the big world project (compress BG1 , BG2 and ToB into one game) , the Solauflein mod that allows you to recruit him. The Redemption of Irenicus is a great mod , and of course , Ascension.

Katana's are the shit in BG2 on a kensai. They're even so much bs that I refuse to play one and ive completed this game once a year since it came out pretty much.

they have weaknesses, there is no Katana +5 which you need to deal with demilichs and mages that cast absolute invulnerability. Hammers, Flails and Slings are much more broken.

also about dex... well... I don't feel like rerolling the char and start over again, I'll probably try to manipulate the save game with shadowkeeper (just keeping the overall amount of points the same). Found an instruction on how to do it for the ipad version.

In BG2 there is also a certain totally fucking ridiculous staff for mages that should be pretty awesome for Warrior/Mage duals... You might want to consider some points in Staffs

You should put all points in Staff lol, with kensai you can put 5 points into a single weapon and have 2 attacks just from proficiency.
|
your forgetting that you get the staff of the magi very late , and until then all your points in staffs are pretty useless.

Just a small update for my Kensai Thief solo I finally got to spellhold after hitting 24 Thief after dual classing at level 13 Kensai to get the Use Any Item HLA and now life seems to be good :D Should I start saving up spell scrolls for the end of ToB? If so just breach?

Staff of Ryn is a lvl 4 staff sold at adventurers mart and and staffs of striking can be used for special occasions (+9 weapons) and can be aquired from both trademeet and figthers guild stronghold. Both tide you over untill magi which tides you over till ram.
I also fail to see why staff of the magi is so op. Perhaps as a secondary for its abilities but otherwise staff of ram does 14-22 base damage and is a +6 weapon which is about twice as much as a holy avenger +6. Most of the abilities you want you get from actually being a mage. Its nice but not essential. If you dont want to abuse toggling invis with nondetection I guess but there is like a million rings that grants invis.

Edit: Wrong thread, my bad!
Loosely related: I started playing The Temple of Elemental Evil again after like 10 years and it is so, so, SO painful to play.

Staff of the Magi is considered OP due to when you hit someone it dispells most of their protection spells on other mages plus it's a +5 weapon so it can hit through everything :D.
