baulders gate 1 is the best RPG ever made, period..but shadows of amn wasnt far behind...i miss the days that companies took pride in their work and added nuances that generation Y gamers dont get to experience..seriously in BG 1 i went off the map in uncharted wilderness and found a talking bunny rabbit named fred, then i got him a cure and it turned out to demon who wanted my D at first then tried to kill me and i found a note on the body that directed me to a little house in tradewind where the family was dead...

comparing dragon age isnt realistic, all RPGs in this era are super linear..some games have poked through the drivle like Bethesda games but Bioware back in the day was easily the gaming company for RPGs..ever.

I don't agree bg1 is the best, I just love planescape torment too much to roll with that...

It's up there though!

HAHAHAHA

i've spent countless hours rolling the "dices" over and over to get a decent character. With some practice you'll even know how to judge a character sheet in 1s... (and you get mad just because you're hearing the same music over and over again)

The music is awesome though so it's ok. Stat rolling is part of why I like playing a mage. Who needs constitution/dexterity if you have spells that ensure you will never be hit? I go for mediocre strength (to prevent encumbrance + to have chance at that wolf outside candlekeep) intelligence (obvious reasons) and wisdom (for wish.) Everything else goes to charisma for RP reasons, because I don't like having to wear the ring of human influence. Usually takes me only a few re-rolls to get favorable stats.

Hmmm i have to disagree here. It might be because i often play with scs2 and in max difficulty, but imo you need constitution to be able to whistand hits/aoe, after that any spare point goes to dext to provide some early armor, especially when playing a solo game.

Hmm looking at my character from my last play through it seems I have 19 dexterity on my main at the end so I guess I did pump it. I do find I can skimp on CON and only have trouble with Kobold Commandos and fireball even with SCS1+2 on. I just stay out of melee and get protection from normal missiles scrolls to keep most archers at bay. Some pre-stoneskin fights get kind of rough, but I don't like playing cheesy character builds where you drop Charisma down to 3, or lower Wisdom and rely on buffs to cast wish. Completely breaks immersion when I look at my character sheet and find he technically has the personality of a rock.

since i played baldurs gate 1 a bit when iwas young and i read this thread i download baldurs gate 2 (friend wanted to borrow me long ago but never did)
so today i tried to play it

i created a human paladin (usually i go dwarf pala's) but i dk, its a human pala with inqisition (probably the reason i made it human... cant imagen draws runnin around inquisiting things^^)

so, but I somehow dont manage to get out of that fcking prison, and Iam really dissapointed by BaldursGate 2. In BaldursGate1 you had a nice start in a town, learing everthing, getting xp, weapons etc than had a cool story where your grandfather death... really epic

and here i have prison which keeps killing my people, so i am left alive (coz palas dont die obviously) but i also dont find the way out. Please help me, how to do the first Level!

You are totally right here. Plus really low wisdom charisma really don't fit with the history.

Then here are several tips for a beginner:
- Don't equip a weapon you're not proficient in, it would give you a HUGE malus.
- no range weapon in a melee, it gives a huge bonus to your enemy (for example if you gave a bow to imoen she will got raped in melee)
- learn where traps are laid, every time they hit you, just load the last save and disable it, easy xp, less damage taken.
- forget offensives spell on jaheira, if you're a paladin she is your only healer, when things get rough keep her away from harm.
- use disables: most foes in the prison are really weak so they won't be able to resist sleep/charms
- don't be afraid of using scroll/wands/potion. Most people have this "i keep consumables for rainy days" abit. DO NOT. It is dumb, these objects are meant to be used so use them.

I use a 2hand sword, Minsc Shield and Longsword, Imana Shield and Shortsword, Jaheria a Woodenstaff.

I fought my way through the libary with decent health pool left, used both heals of her jaheria and slept there by accident(pls which hotkey is sleep)

then i went to the dwarfs who "killed" imana so she ran away. i still managed to kill the rest of them though and saved by accident (what is the hotkey for quickload, and my menu disapeared, is there a way to get it back?)

also is it problem that the Woman went away? and what do you have to do with the guy in the water?

Somehow like 80% of the doors are looked..

Well, hiding/showing the menu is "h" if i'm not wrong.
sleeping is "r", you can't sleep near enemies and you might be awaken by foes, it is however the only way to have you spells back.

Again it might sound boring but as someone said before, take some time to read and understand what every spell does. Depending on the difficulty you set the game in, you might have friendly fire on aoe spells such as fireball, most clouds or lightning bolt.
Red are offensive.
white are neutrals
blue are friendly.

As for stoneskin it is a buff improving an ally's physical armor.

As i said, go to every character sheet and look what kind of weapon they can use. You do not want to equip long sword and shield on Minsc, He'll be useless. His early profiencies are mass, 1h axes, 2h sword and long bow.

I think sleep is hotkey R but I'm not sure, you can change them all by running BGconfig from the program group in the start menu. In fact you must do this if you want to assign a hotkey to quick load, as it is unassigned by default. It sounds like you hid your interface, there should be a triangle shaped button on the bottom that pops it back up.

Spoiler for opening dungeon.
+ Show Spoiler +

As for your dungeon problems you made a good choice specializing in 2H swords, that will definitely reward you later if you are a paladin. Sword and sheild isn't very good for Minsc, in the beginning he does well with Axes and of course 2H swords as these are the proficiencies he comes with. You should try to equip Imoen with a bow to take advantage of her spellcasting and high dexterity. Putting her on the front lines is not a good idea as she will need armor to survive, which disables her spells, and her theif level and strength are no high enough to backstab. Also the only traps she cannot disarm are easily disposed of by collecting the wand of X keys around the dungeon. If she runs away it ultimately changes nothing in the plot, so you are ok without her. Jaheira does fine with a staff, also a spear or club/scimitar+shield. I don't remember her proficiencies off the top of my head though so I could be wrong. There is a very good early game two handed sword in the room directly above the dwarves. You have to do a small quest for it, but it is worth it for both story and combat purposes.

I don't know what you mean by guy in the water. Do you mean Rieliv? The creature that is kept in the tank? If you speak to him I think he will flat out tell you what you need to get for him. Make sure to search all the chests in the area, as they contain many valuables that will be unaccessible once you leave the dungeon. If you have the expansion installed you can hold down the Tab key to highlight all lootable objects.

EDIT: Damn too slow.

EDIT 2: You should probably save Imoen now that I think about it. There are some traps and locks preventing you from getting some essential items later on. You will need her to get these. Or you could + Show Spoiler +
backtrack once you get to level two of the dungeon and recruit Yoshimo.

It is definitely worth playing first, though ideally, you do so with one of several mods that lets you do so in the BG2 engine (Tutu or Trilogy).

The games are actually pretty different! bg1 is more open, with less story and more frustrating Imo. Bg1 only if you don't mind a few bumbs and bruises along the way, you can play Bg1 in the bg2 engine! i highly recommend that i think theres a link in this thread somewhere otherwise google should find it pretty easily. bg1 is an excellent game but still comes third compared to bg2 and planescape torment in my opinion. And i don't feel like it's needed to enjoy bg2 in its fullest.
edit: ups, i'm a bit late^^

It's nice to know what happened in BG1 for the sake of BG2 but it's by no means a requirement. BG1 is good, but plane and simple it's not as good as the sequel. It is far more open and has what feels like a few hundred small simple side quests and that's really what most of the game consists of. BG2 is far more refined, and overall just a better experience. The Characters are more interesting the dungeons are more exiting, the quests are more intriguing. There is not one aspect of BG1 that is better than BG2.

It is worth noting that for someone who may be working with only a little experience with 2nd Edition D&D, playing BG1 first is probably highly preferable. Starting at 8th level with no D&D experience and with 2-3 casters in the party is going to be very overwhelming. Starting with 2 party members, 0-1 caster, and easing you into the experience in BG1 is far more manageable.

I vote Baldur's gate 2 (including expansion, although Iguess you don'' really hve to)) as the best RPG (not hack'n'slash or action/adventure) ever made.

I purchased Planescape torment, but never ended up playing it, LOL. I also played Icewind Dale 1&2, Knights of the old republic 1, and Neverwinter nights 1, which were pretty good, but BG2 is the best.

One of the things I liked a lot about BG2 is that it it used updated D&D rules, but moreso that it added new content, like the MONK! I always been a huge fan of monk, and consider it distinct from a caster class or a warrior class. At high levels (and even somewhat at low levels) they are so awesome cause they are like immune to everything, and can deal a freight train of damage while unarmed.

I played a bit of BG1, but never got too far, cause I was used to icewind dale engine, and other games with better interface, graphics, and even game mechanics. I don't doubt that it would be the second best RPG though.

Who can forget BG1 main theme though? So epic! I remember when I first played the game, it was on display at a radio shack or something, and I just spent all y time going through the character creation screen and listening to the music.
"Then he told me to tell you that he wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire" — "Well, you tell him that I said that I wouldn't piss on him if he was on Jeopardy!"

Ohhh

I love it when i find something cool like this by browsing through random threads in forums. I have wanted to play Planescape:Torment for such a long time, but it actually looked so bad on my large monitor that i simply could not do it for a long time. Somehow, i also missed it when it was new, i have no idea how that happened, since i liked playing RPGs a lot at that time.

Thank you.
