I'm not sure I conveyed what I mean.
An example: IIRC when you first get in Akhtala you find yourself near to an inn, and on the first floor there is a party of adventurers you can get in a fight with. They are not hostile at first so I have all the scouting I want but that doesn't help me. I need to go through the fight multiple times to learn who is more dangerous, what kind of spells they are using and in which order, when and what kind of potions they use, etcetera. I can't try once and say whoah, too tough for me; i need at least 5-6 runs to decide that. And when I come back later they may be too weak with worthless loot.

Hehe, that party is probably the biggest newbtrap in the game .
(right next to, I wonder what is behind this hidden dor --> Lich :p).

But does it really help you to know what they do? It didn't for me, i normally just go there later again (or try to sepereate them on two etages, use traps and so on... the coward way )

One of the most important things to note is that you should have a thief, a mage (I recommend sorcerer), and a cleric/druid in your party. It's "possible" to do the game without a cleric (on solo runs or if you just use the temples to heal up) but not something you should do on your first run through. You're going to always want a thief no matter what, too many locked things you can't access without one. I mean you could always use "knock" 1,000,000 times..... Again, it's "possible" to do the game without a mage (there are certain weapons that let you remove magic when striking your enemy), it's just a lot more challenging.

I really wouldn't recommend a sorcerer for a first playthrough. Mages have the great advantage of being able to learn many spells, so you don't choose the wrong and suck forever without any chance to change it. As a mage, if a spell sucks, you just don't memorize it anymore.

Suppose there is some foe you can almost kill, but right before dying throws a fireball and kills half your party. If you reload, memorize some fire protection spell, rest and reengage you might be able to defeat it. But surprise! after the fireball he does some other trick that requires similar preparation. This is how the "challenging" fights in BG2 felt for me.

Despite this I found the game great and enjoyable, however because of this I can't play icewind dale: without the great story and characters, i don't have any drive.

But I realize now this is mostly my problem and I'm being too picky. After all very few games come close to the quality of bg and none of those released in the past 10 years or so do.

Always the mages, then probably the thieves, then the warriors.

That group of adventurers in particular is just very strong though. It's not only that you just dont know who to focus first its just probably too hard for low levels.

Also there is so much great loot throughout the game. Makes it great as well in my opinion. The most random thief can carry a great item for one of your chars.

And i love that there are enemies that you just shouldnt engage at certain levels. You just cant fuckin kill a dragon at lvl 2. You have to chose wheter a quest is within your capabilites. You cant just do any quest at any time. Makes it so much more realistic roleplay wise and you notice your growth during the game.

I hate that in every new game the enemies just scale with the hero. Soooo annoying. In those games you kill dragons on lvl 1 and on lvl 18 random bandits are givin you a hard time. Completely negates the feeling that you are really becoming more powerful .

The game on higher difficulties definitely requires knowledge of spells, classes and mechanics of D&D. Most of the time you can assume what kind of enemies your gonna face in the next quest. Then just prepare the right spells and rest. And for all the smaller encounters you just gotta have those spells ready which always come in handy. I think on normal dificulty i could even roll with the same set of spells prepared for the whole game. Just gotta know whats effective.

you just don't know how to pre-buff, initiate and read the more subtle signs.

1. whenever you see a party of well-armed characters supported by a mage and a thief, you will fight them. no exception.

2. even if you don't end up fighting them, does it really hurt to be prepared? mirror image and stoneskin the mage, hide the thief, magic circle from evil the party, summon skeletons etc...

3. open up the fight with a disable. emotion or sequencer with 2x web or something. cloudkill the mages and focus them with bows. block entrances with tanks and summons. this is how you start almost any non-boss fight. 10$ says you just tried to fireball them and run in with fighters.

4. watch the spell animations (or listen to the chants), read the text to see who buffed with what, watch out for thieves drinking inviz potions, etc. this takes experience but you will eventually notice the patterns in which the ai does things and will be able to anticipate almost anything.

You guys be reading into this way too much.

Roll Human Kensai

stock pile gold, sell everything, even better take warrior strong hold

at level 9 take mage as a second class.

Buy one of every scroll from the vendors and kick your whole party out

Use the scroll to level your self high enough to re unlock your warrior side.

You now have a spell to turn people into stone, use it on all joinable party members except jan and decorate your warrior strong hold.

You can now solo the game but you should take Jan along for the lulz don't actually need him to fight.

Kensai mages so broken, you can of course solo as a sorc but helps to learn the mage skills first.

Hunt down manual's and read tool tips to know when and which dispel like skilsl to use (dispel, breach and so forth)

Soloing the game as a dual class kensai/mage or a multi class fighter/mage is a lot of fun. You get more XP since you have no party member to share it with. with all the mage defensive spells you will rarely need healing.

If you want to be cheap you can get Yoshimo to pickpocket Kangaxx the lich for a ring of gaxx. Then once you have defeated the lich form, cast immunity to abjuration and position your character right next to him so that you take the imprisonments.
Then cast elemental spawns like lesser fire elemental. use a scroll of magic protection on the elemental if it keeps getting killed. When kangaxx dies he will drop another ring of gaxx. Even though its kind of cheesy you can kill one of the harder bosses in the game at a really low level and get 2x ring of gaxx which is the best ring in the game.

I didn't know that kangax imprisonment was a spell so I thought that only barbarian rage and the immunity to magic scroll were effective.

Imprisonment is a level 9 mage spell. You can even learn it if you want, but it's kind of pointless.

I wanted to reinstall BG today to play it again after reading this thread, only to find that my disc is ruined Says something about a "Redundacy cyclic error" -.-

I did some googeling, and I found that you can buy both BG2 and ToB in 1 package on GoG.com for 8 dollars - It's just download, so no need to wait for it to arrive in the mail =D

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/baldurs_gate_2_complete

You can get the original BG1 + the expansion for 7,5 dollars too

I believe it's only for this weekend though, so if you don't have this gem of a game yet, GET IT! You won't regret it

The first link of chain forged, the first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.

Alright, my playthrough so far. Started about 4 days ago, and i just arrived at Candlekeep in chapter 7 now. What pisses me off is that there is no clear window to do the TotSC areas. Right now, if i want to roleplay it, i'm in a race against time to kill the Iron Throne leaders, then prove my innocence after being incarcerated and finally stop Sarevok. It's not like i can take a sudden timeout and just decide, Hey let's go on a Sea Voyage for a few months to kill some werewolves..

Guess i'll just have to complete the normal BG1 then go for Durlag's Tower etc. Kinda ruins the immersion though.

Edit: Funny how my Kensai main char has over 50% in both total creatures killed and creature xp in a 6 man party. And i'm just dual wielding some basic katanas. 3> this class. Can't wait to get my hands on Celestial Fury in a couple of days!

Haha, kensai/mages using anything else but a quarterstaff. Guys, if you are going to play a cheese class at least cheese all the way

btw if anyone is wondering why is everyone taking their kensai to lvl 9 and then dual classing, it is because fighter classes get full Hp until lvl 9, and after that only get 3 hp per lvl. So it is not worth it to get you Mage abilities later for just a few hp while your thaco will be low enought to hit anyone in Bg2 (not sure about ToB but you got lvl9 spells by then and epic abilities)

i prefer a fighter/illusionist or sorcerer to kensai->mage. a pure kensai is also pretty sick if you don't get sick of keeping him alive early game.

There's the little issue with Kensai being dubbed a Sword Saint. Not a staff saint :/ also dps'ing with staves is boring as shit and looks stupid too.

The only "cheese" i do in this game, if it can be considered so, is sell and resteal expensive gear in mae'var's guild so i get loads of money at start. Otherwise i try to play 100% clean, dont even pickpocket kangaxx for his 2nd ring.

Just installed the Big World Project with most of the higher difficulty mods. I'm now going to play it through as a solo assassin. I'm already having difficulty with gibberlings
