I saw the Diablo thread, and I just remembered this little gem of a game, and I was wondering how many of y'all had played this. It came out before Diablo 2 and for quite some time it had a strong cult going with crazy online community.... untill Diablo 2 came.

Was replaying this weekend. The memories :D

it was awesome, its also surprising how good it looks even today. great music, great special abilities, great art design contribute to the awesome atmosphere, and make it a very special nostalgic experience.

Fucking awesome game. Back in middle school our town had to be evacuated from a forest fire and I played Nox for like a week straight on my computer I brought with me to the hotel room. Awesome shit.

edit: yes our town was being evacuated and the first thing i thought i had to get out of the house was my desktop. wtg priorities.

omg Nox was the shit! I actually reinstalled it 2 weeks ago and played through single player again. I miss multiplayer though Back when I was in 4th grade I used to get up at 4am every morning so I could play for 3 hours before school ^^ I wish more games took after Nox because it definitely promoted skilled players.

Loved Nox. The singeplayer was engaging, and had one of the coolest last levels I've ever played through.

The multiplayer was craaazy. I loved porting people onto traps as the mage.

NOX is the shit!! It's way more fun/dynamic than D2 IMO, just a bit on the short side.

I'd love to see a NOX 2 with modern gfx/items/multiplayer

Don't bother. I played it back in the days, didn't complete it for some reason, decided to give it a go about a month ago after stumbling upon some RPG Gaming thread here on TL.

Basically it's Diablo with a bit better gfx (questionably) and effects, but everything else: story, combat, immersion, RPG elements, - a lot, lot worse.

Definitely a matter of opinion, Nox's PvP is better than D2 tenfold and I played D2 for years.

I just installed NOX for the first time about an hour ago after reading this thread. It's ok. The controls are a bit awkward when you compare it to D2's one click/hotkeys. Knocking down those destructible walls with a bow having to single click every time I want to fire gets a bit tedious as well.

I'm definitely going to give it more of a go after all the praise it's received here but I don't know how long it can hold my attention.

IMO, the multiplayer is what really makes Nox shine. I wish I could find a copy of this game somewhere, I'd love to play with some TLers.

Edit:

But in regards to single player, if you give up on it before the last level, you're really cheating yourself. Literally one of the best ending sequences I've played. (Granted the final boss is tedious as shit, but the trek up to her is siiick)

I wish the single player wasn't so linear, but in all other respects it WAS awesome.

The old, authentic Westwood Studios is dead and buried; this is ancient history (when speaking in video game terms).

Nox was awesome. I remember playing through it as a young lad. Mage was my weapon of choice, because it was the only character that came with an ingame cheat. When you got that blink, you could blink through the entire game and not touch an enemy..never did manage to beat that final boss tho.

god, I still have the two cds floating around here somewhere, I loved that game.
the controls felt so much more fluent than in diablo 2, you could sprint, you could jump.
and the flexible fog of war was awesome, especially in multiplayer.

good times.

LOVED it. I just never beat the Warrior campaign, because at that point I'd played through the game two times already and didn't want to spend ages smashing Hecuba or whatever her name was.

Nox was awesome, always felt that Wizard was ridiculously OP and the Warrior was waaaayyy too hard. Well, the part where you have to collect the parts for the halberd was ridiculous when you're a Warrior and have to infiltrate the Wizard area. Wizard infiltrating the Warrior area on the other hand was easy.

Yeah, I played it. Didn't like it as much as the Diablo games, nor played it as much. But it was quite good.
Only thing I hated was the rather small weight limit. I'm a bit of a pack rat and ended up running back and forth to carry additional stuff...

Conjurer's for the win! I like the unit format, summoning and archery make a good mix.

the warrior entering the wizard place was probably the most fun part in singleplayer nox. i just love chasing those wizards around as they teleport away and try to use fireballs and shit on you, but you just use warcry and they all run away, haha. the most annoying part there is that the wizards use fumble on you.

Fucking awesome, I loved that part as Warrior (and entering the Warrior place as Wizard, too).

Nox is great, I always hated that I never found people to play multiplayer with =(

The Wizard area wasn't too bad once you figured out that you needed to stock up on Shurikens and Chakrums... Like tons of shurikens of bewilderment.

I absolutely love Nox; multiplayer in large games back in the day was probably the most fun I've ever had gaming, even dealing with massive ping on dial-up from Australia. Single player and Quest are great too and imo have good replayability.

also using the bullrush and the hook on them was loads of fun. id always use that huge hammer that kills most of them in one hit, just draw them in with the huk and blast them :D

Haha, it's also better than SC2's PvP

Anyway, Nox was a really, really fun game. I didn't make it to the last level though, but was close. I simply played it when I was a bit too young to understand how to use the warrior's spells properly.

And use the halberd of horrendous (which can't be fumbled) a fair amount, along with charge/warcry to move quickly and keep from getting spelled down. I'm going to second that it was my favorite part of the game, though.

The real beauty of the game is the quality it provided at that time, in terms of video game development in graphics, interaction, gameplay and multiplayer. Multiplayer at that time was HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Still remember the mass wizard cult wars. Ridiculous barages of spells :D

Nox was an epic multiplayer game.

As far as I know, it was the first competitive action game in a fantasy setting - at least mainstream.

As people have said, the singleplayer really wasn't that good, but some peopel are huge fans of it for whatever reason.

The multiplayer was fantastic, and one of the main reasons was the design of the player input and combat mechanics. You either hit or miss based off where you clicked (and/or how close you were or if they had a shield up), no silly % chances to miss or hit (armor reduced certain damage types depending on the armor type (and increased an elemental damage type)).

The way the controls were designed, you had access to far more abilities than you could in any other games I've ever played. You had 5 ability hotkeys (ASDFG) per ability set and you could easily toggle through up to 5 ability sets, making it quite easy to cast up to 25 abilities.

Most games now used left hand for movement, but since this game uses mouse for movement AND aim, it frees the left hand to do much more. The only downside is you can't run backwards, but IMO that's a pretty good thing, because I find running backwards in virtually any game is really lame.

I really wish this game got balanced and improved a bit more, and held it's popularity like some other games.
This is one of the only good non-FPS/RTS PvP games I've ever played (along with Guild Wars), and it really deserves a spot in gamer's hardrive's instead of stupid grindfests that have ridiculously bad PvP such as diablo and diablo 2.

I think games like DotA/LoL/HoN would be better if they used nox-style controls and mechanics, as it makes it much easier and skillful to do virtually everything.

I am annoyed that Starcraft 2 does not support mouse position. It's so ridiculous, because so many potential custom games could take advantage of that, and it's absolutely critical to have a variety of good games on the SC2 platform.
If SC2 supported mouse position, it would have been possible to make a remake of Nox for SC2 (although the game lag would have to be fixed for it to be viable PvP)

Hahah. After being reminded of this little gem again, I keep hearing all the wizard spells and the warrior charge's "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" then hitting the wall and the disorient noise. I loved this game so much!

Yes, go to noxforum.net, downloads section to the "Easier Nox Download" thread and it's there. It uses a no-cd crack that gets a false positive on some antivirus programs (AVG mainly).

Note: When you login to play multiplayer, do not click "Register". just type in a unique username and a password and login. The username has to be unique or you won't see games.

And this is not illegal, its been tweeted by EA games and Westwood staff.

Also the game still has good server hosting, although the servers are down often, I'm hosting a backup server for when they go down. I get like 50-60 ping in the servers, MUCH better than the official servers back in the day.

I strongly encourage anyone to try this game, it's a total blast. Easy to get in to, and it has an insanely high skill ceiling.

I've never played it.. but after watching some gameplay videos, I wouldn't say it had better graphics than D2..

The graphics are definitely better. Specifically the spells and particle effects. Its also higher resolution. Both games look nice though, and graphics dont mean anything.

I can definitely recommend this game.

The single player is really good, but it really excels in its multiplayer. Though the official servers are down, the post above me specified how to play online.

What I especially like are the mechanics of the game, e.g. jumping, line of sight and the spells.

However, I did find the wizards to be a bit OP in multiplayer, imo. Did anyone else have difficulties against wizards' Death Ray ability? I remember playing 1v1 with my friend, though we were pretty even, he always had sick mouse control, being able to quickly snipe me with that spell. Ofc, my favorite class was conjurer, maybe that was the problem :O

There probably was some imbalance, but it was a bit hard to pinpoint, and things were pretty decent overall. Conjurer had a bug where you can lower his crossbow cooldown substantially which balanced out the conjurer a bit better (although maybe OP if really abused).

IMO warrior needed the most help, but a skillful warrior with good ping was really ridiculously powerful. IMO only having like 3-4 main skills and 1-2 less-used skills isn't that great — it would be nice if they could have been made more interesting by having more abilities.

I play Nox on W7 (install from official CD) but I'm not getting the music and cutscenes, any help?
Also, this is an awesome game, played it all the time when I was a kid

(sorry if this is not an appropriate reason to bump, but I can't find anything about it on the internet and I think it doesn't warrant it's own thread)
