Basically it's Diablo with a bit better gfx (questionably) and effects, but everything else: story, combat, immersion, RPG elements, - a lot, lot worse.

I'm definitely going to give it more of a go after all the praise it's received here but I don't know how long it can hold my attention.

The controls are a bit awkward when you compare it to D2's one click/hotkeys. Knocking down those destructible walls with a bow having to single click every time I want to fire gets a bit tedious as well. I'm definitely going to give it more of a go after all the praise it's received here but I don't know how long it can hold my attention. IMO, the multiplayer is what really makes Nox shine. I wish I could find a copy of this game somewhere, I'd love to play with some TLers. Edit: But in regards to single player, if you give up on it before the last level, you're really cheating yourself. Literally one of the best ending sequences I've played. (Granted the final boss is tedious as shit, but the trek up to her is siiick)

It was generally frowned on to play a Conjurer online as oppose to a warrior or a wizard.

the controls felt so much more fluent than in diablo 2, you could sprint, you could jump. and the flexible fog of war was awesome, especially in multiplayer. good times.

Only thing I hated was the rather small weight limit. I'm a bit of a pack rat and ended up running back and forth to carry additional stuff... Conjurer's for the win! I like the unit format, summoning and archery make a good mix.

Fucking awesome, I loved that part as Warrior (and entering the Warrior place as Wizard, too). Nox is great, I always hated that I never found people to play multiplayer with =(

I simply played it when I was a bit too young to understand how to use the warrior's spells properly.

And use the halberd of horrendous (which can't be fumbled) a fair amount, along with charge/warcry to move quickly and keep from getting spelled down. I'm going to second that it was my favorite part of the game, though.

As far as I know, it was the first competitive action game in a fantasy setting - at least mainstream. As people have said, the singleplayer really wasn't that good, but some peopel are huge fans of it for whatever reason. The multiplayer was fantastic, and one of the main reasons was the design of the player input and combat mechanics. You either hit or miss based off where you clicked (and/or how close you were or if they had a shield up), no silly % chances to miss or hit (armor reduced certain damage types depending on the armor type (and increased an elemental damage type)). The way the controls were designed, you had access to far more abilities than you could in any other games I've ever played. You had 5 ability hotkeys (ASDFG) per ability set and you could easily toggle through up to 5 ability sets, making it quite easy to cast up to 25 abilities. Most games now used left hand for movement, but since this game uses mouse for movement AND aim, it frees the left hand to do much more. The only downside is you can't run backwards, but IMO that's a pretty good thing, because I find running backwards in virtually any game is really lame. I really wish this game got balanced and improved a bit more, and held it's popularity like some other games. This is one of the only good non-FPS/RTS PvP games I've ever played (along with Guild Wars), and it really deserves a spot in gamer's hardrive's instead of stupid grindfests that have ridiculously bad PvP such as diablo and diablo 2. I think games like DotA/LoL/HoN would be better if they used nox-style controls and mechanics, as it makes it much easier and skillful to do virtually everything. I am annoyed that Starcraft 2 does not support mouse position. It's so ridiculous, because so many potential custom games could take advantage of that, and it's absolutely critical to have a variety of good games on the SC2 platform. If SC2 supported mouse position, it would have been possible to make a remake of Nox for SC2 (although the game lag would have to be fixed for it to be viable PvP)

It uses a no-cd crack that gets a false positive on some antivirus programs (AVG mainly). Note: When you login to play multiplayer, do not click "Register". just type in a unique username and a password and login. The username has to be unique or you won't see games. And this is not illegal, its been tweeted by EA games and Westwood staff. Also the game still has good server hosting, although the servers are down often, I'm hosting a backup server for when they go down. I get like 50-60 ping in the servers, MUCH better than the official servers back in the day. I strongly encourage anyone to try this game, it's a total blast. Easy to get in to, and it has an insanely high skill ceiling.

The single player is really good, but it really excels in its multiplayer. Though the official servers are down, the post above me specified how to play online. What I especially like are the mechanics of the game, e.g. jumping, line of sight and the spells. However, I did find the wizards to be a bit OP in multiplayer, imo. Did anyone else have difficulties against wizards' Death Ray ability? I remember playing 1v1 with my friend, though we were pretty even, he always had sick mouse control, being able to quickly snipe me with that spell. Ofc, my favorite class was conjurer, maybe that was the problem :O

IMO warrior needed the most help, but a skillful warrior with good ping was really ridiculously powerful. IMO only having like 3-4 main skills and 1-2 less-used skills isn't that great — it would be nice if they could have been made more interesting by having more abilities.
